    Interval Edge Coloring of Bipartite Graphs with Small Vertex Degrees

    An edge coloring of a graph G is called interval edge coloring if for each v ? V(G) the set of colors on edges incident to v forms an interval of integers. A graph G is interval colorable if there is an interval coloring of G. For an interval colorable graph G, by the interval chromatic index of G, denoted by ?\u27_i(G), we mean the smallest number k such that G is interval colorable with k colors. A bipartite graph G is called (?,?)-biregular if each vertex in one part has degree ? and each vertex in the other part has degree ?. A graph G is called (?*,?*)-bipartite if G is a subgraph of an (?,?)-biregular graph and the maximum degree in one part is ? and the maximum degree in the other part is ?. In the paper we study the problem of interval edge colorings of (k*,2*)-bipartite graphs, for k ? {3,4,5}, and of (5*,3*)-bipartite graphs. We prove that every (5*,2*)-bipartite graph admits an interval edge coloring using at most 6 colors, which can be found in O(n^{3/2}) time, and we prove that an interval edge 5-coloring of a (5*,2*)-bipartite graph can be found in O(n^{3/2}) time, if it exists. We show that every (4^*,2^*)-bipartite graph admits an interval edge 4-coloring, which can be found in O(n) time. The two following problems of interval edge coloring are known to be NP-complete: 6-coloring of (6,3)-biregular graphs (Asratian and Casselgren (2006)) and 5-coloring of (5*,5*)-bipartite graphs (Giaro (1997)).     River biogeochemistry and source identification of nitrate by means of isotopic tracers in the Baltic Sea catchments

    International audienceNitrate input to a river is largely controlled by land use in its catchment. We compared the information carried by the isotopic signatures of nitrate in 12 Baltic rivers, in relation to the vegetation cover of their catchments. We found isotope values in nitrate ranging from ?2 to 14 for ?15N and 8 to 25 per mil for ?18O. Seasonal signals were evident in all rivers. The annual variability of riverine isotope signatures is presented in detail for one Nordic, the Kemijoki, and two southern rivers, Vistula and Oder. Nordic rivers with relatively pristine vegetation in its catchments show not only low ?15N values and high ?18O-NO3? but also lower annual variability than rivers draining densely populated land. Seasonal signals could be found in all of the rivers. We used load weighted nitrate isotope data and data from the three major sources (farmland/sewage, atmospheric deposition and from runoff of pristine soils) to theoretically estimate the shares of nitrate from these sources. The results agree well with same estimates derived from a Global Land Cover data base. The comparison with an emission model (EM) reveals good agreements for intensively used catchments and rather bad ones for pristine catchments. Advantages and limitations of the tested model types are discussed

    Model structure analysis to estimate basic immunological processes and maternal risk for parvovirus B19

    After a steep monotone rise with age, the seroprevalence profiles for human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) display a decrease or plateau between the ages of 20 and 40, in each of 5 European countries. We investigate whether this phenomenon is induced by waning antibodies for PVB19 and, if this is the case, whether secondary infections are plausible, or whether boosting may occur. Several immunological scenarios are tested for PVB19 by fitting different compartmental dynamic transmission models to serological data using data on social contact patterns. The social contact approach has already been shown informative to estimate transmission rates and the basic reproduction number for infections transmitted predominantly through nonsexual social contacts. Our results show that for 4 countries, model selection criteria favor the scenarios allowing for waning immunity at an age-specific rate over the assumption of lifelong immunity, assuming that the transmission rates are directly proportional to the contact rates. Different views on the evolution of the immune response to PVB19 infection lead to altered estimates of the age-specific force of infection and the basic reproduction number. The scenarios which allow for multiple infections during one lifetime predict a higher frequency of PVB19 infection in pregnant women and of associated fetal deaths. When prevaccination serological data are available, the framework developed in this paper could prove worthwhile to investigate these different scenarios for other infections as well, such as cytomegalovirus

    How physicians perceive and utilize information from a teratogen information service: The Motherisk Program

    BACKGROUND: Teratogen information services have been developed around the world to disseminate information regarding the safety of maternal exposures during pregnancy. The Motherisk Program in Toronto, Canada, fields thousands of these inquiries per year. Our primary objective was to evaluate the perception and utilization of information received from us by physicians. Our secondary objective was to examine their information seeking behavior, in particular regarding teratogen information. METHODS: A one page survey was sent to physicians who had called Motherisk for information concerning pregnancy exposures in the previous 30 days for three months. Among the questions that were asked were demographics, which included gender, years in practice, specialty, information resources, and how they utilized the information received from Motherisk. RESULTS: We received 118/200 completed questionnaires (59% response rate). The mean age of the respondents was: 42 ± 9 years, mean years of practice was: 14 ± 8 years, males: 46(38%) and females 72(62%) and 95(80%) were family physicians. 56(48%) researched their question prior to calling Motherisk, 106(91%) and passed on the information received to their patient verbatim. The top four resources for information were: 1) The CPS (PDR), 2) textbooks, 3) journals and 4) colleagues. Only 8% used the Medline for gathering information. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians feel that a teratogen information service is an important component in the management of women exposed to drugs, chemicals, radiation and infections diseases etc. during pregnancy. Despite the advent of the electronic age, a minority of the physicians in our survey elected to use electronic means to seek information

    Reduced adhesion between cells and substrate confers selective advantage in bacterial colonies

    Microbial colonies cultured on agar Petri dishes have become a model system to study biological evolution in populations expanding in space. Processes such as clonal segregation and gene surfing have been shown to be affected by interactions between microbial cells and their environment. In this work we investigate the role of mechanical interactions such as cell-surface adhesion. We compare two strains of the bacterium E. coli: a wild-type strain and a "shaved" strain that adheres less to agar. We show that the shaved strain has a selective advantage over the wild type: although both strains grow with the same rate in liquid media, the shaved strain produces colonies that expand faster on agar. This allows the shaved strain outgrow the wild type when both strains compete for space. We hypothesise that, in contrast to a more common scenario in which selective advantage results from increased growth rate, the higher fitness of the shaved strain is caused by reduced adhesion and friction with the agar surface.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to the EPL Special Issue "Evolutionary modeling and experimental evolution

    Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant use in first trimester pregnancy and risk of specific congenital anomalies: A European register-based study

    Evidence of an association between early pregnancy exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and congenital heart defects (CHD) has contributed to recommendations to weigh benefits and risks carefully. The objective of this study was to determine the specificity of association between first trimester exposure to SSRIs and specific CHD and other congenital anomalies (CA) associated with SSRI exposure in the literature (signals). A population-based case-malformed control study was conducted in 12 EUROCAT CA registries covering 2.1 million births 1995-2009 including livebirths, fetal deaths from 20 weeks gestation and terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly. Babies/fetuses with specific CHD (n = 12,876) and non-CHD signal CA (n = 13,024), were compared with malformed controls whose diagnosed CA have not been associated with SSRI in the literature (n = 17,083). SSRI exposure in first trimester pregnancy was associated with CHD overall (OR adjusted for registry 1.41, 95% CI 1.07-1.86, fluoxetine adjOR 1.43 95% CI 0.85-2.40, paroxetine adjOR 1.53, 95% CI 0.91-2.58) and with severe CHD (adjOR 1.56, 95% CI 1.02-2.39), particularly Tetralogy of Fallot (adjOR 3.16, 95% CI 1.52-6.58) and Ebstein's anomaly (adjOR 8.23, 95% CI 2.92-23.16). Significant associations with SSRI exposure were also found for ano-rectal atresia/stenosis (adjOR 2.46, 95% CI 1.06-5.68), gastroschisis (adjOR 2.42, 95% CI 1.10-5.29), renal dysplasia (adjOR 3.01, 95% CI 1.61-5.61), and clubfoot (adjOR 2.41, 95% CI 1.59-3.65). These data support a teratogenic effect of SSRIs specific to certain anomalies, but cannot exclude confounding by indication or associated factors
