While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Amber Hay describes her observations during her study abroad program at Telemark University College in Bø, Norway

A Multipath Simulator for use in Evaluation of Spacecraft Ranging and Communication Systems

Tests solely designed to test performance of spacecraft communication and ranging equipment under conditions of severe fading are usually impossible to perform, and when possible they are of too short duration to allow system modification to improve performance. This paper describes a fading channel simulator which is readily constructed and flexible in operation. By use of this simulator communication and ranging equipment can be tested and optimized for operation during periods of severe fading. The fading channel simulator described in this paper gives fading rates varying from about 2 to 30 cps. Frequency and time scaling of the problem can be used if the fading rates of the channel to be simulated are outside this range

    Digital Filtering in Space Communication

In ground receivers for space applications, a bank of filters is frequently used to demultiplex the received subcarriers. Such filter banks are also frequently used for measurements of the doppler shift of the received signals. These filters are generally characterized by having a narrow bandwidth. This means that they are rather costly and often difficult to construct to the desired specifications. Since the baseband structure varies from mission to mission, the useful life of these baseband filters is short. An alternate approach to the filtering problem that can cut cost and increase flexibility while at the same time improve system performance is therefore welcome. Such an approach exists in digital filtering. A digital filter is a computer program that allows digital computer to be used as a linear filter. Such programs can now be written for a general purpose computer that allows the computer to be used as a filter bank in real time
