Exploiting Macro-actions and Predicting Plan Length in Planning as Satisfiability
The use of automatically learned knowledge for a planning domain can significantly improve the performance of a generic planner when solving a problem in this domain. In this work, we focus on the well-known SAT-based approach to planning and investigate two types of learned knowledge that have not been studied in this planning framework before: macro-actions and planning horizon. Macro-actions are sequences of actions that typically occur in the solution plans, while a planning horizon of a problem is the length of a (possibly optimal) plan solving it. We propose a method that uses a machine learning tool for building a predictive model of the optimal planning horizon, and variants of the well-known planner SatPlan and solver MiniSat that can exploit macro actions
and learned planning horizons to improve their performance. An experimental analysis illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed techniques
Influences of dwell time and cursor control on the performance in gaze driven typing
In gaze controlled computer interfaces the dwell time is often used as selection criterion. But this solution comes along with several problems, especially in the temporal domain: Eye movement studies on scene perception could demonstrate that fixations of different durations serve different purposes and should therefore be differentiated. The use of dwell time for selection implies the need to distinguish intentional selections from merely per-ceptual processes, described as the Midas touch problem. Moreover, the feedback of the actual own eye position has not yet been addressed to systematic studies in the context of usability in gaze based computer interaction. We present research on the usability of a simple eye typing set up. Different dwell time and eye position feedback configurations were tested. Our results indicate that smoothing raw eye position and temporal delays in visual feedback enhance the system's functionality and usability. Best overall performance was obtained with a dwell time of 500 ms
Eye typing in application: A comparison of two systems with ALS patients
A variety of eye typing systems has been developed during the last decades. Such systems can provide support for people who lost the ability to communicate, e.g. patients suffering from motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the current retrospective analysis, two eye typing applications were tested (EyeGaze, GazeTalk) by ALS patients (N = 4) in order to analyze objective performance measures and subjective ratings. An advantage of the EyeGaze system was found for most of the evaluated criteria. The results are discussed in respect of the special target population and in relation to requirements of eye tracking devices

Modelling soil dust aerosol in the Bodélé depression during the BoDEx campaign
We present regional model simulations of the dust emission events during the Bodélé Dust Experiment (BoDEx) that was carried out in February and March 2005 in Chad. A box model version of the dust emission model is used to test different input parameters for the emission model, and to compare the dust emissions computed with observed wind speeds to those calculated with wind speeds from the regional model simulation. While field observations indicate that dust production occurs via self-abrasion of saltating diatomite flakes in the Bodélé, the emission model based on the assumption of dust production by saltation and using observed surface wind speeds as input parameters reproduces observed dust optical thicknesses well. Although the peak wind speeds in the regional model underestimate the highest wind speeds occurring on 10–12 March 2005, the spatio-temporal evolution of the dust cloud can be reasonably well reproduced by this model. Dust aerosol interacts with solar and thermal radiation in the regional model; it is responsible for a decrease in maximum daytime temperatures by about 5 K at the beginning the dust storm on 10 March 2005. This direct radiative effect of dust aerosol accounts for about half of the measured temperature decrease compared to conditions on 8 March. Results from a global dust model suggest that the dust from the Bodélé is an important contributor to dust crossing the African Savannah region towards the Gulf of Guinea and the equatorial Atlantic, where it can contribute up to 40% to the dust optical thickness
A Better-response Strategy for Self-interested Planning Agents
[EN] When self-interested agents plan individually, interactions that prevent them from executing their actions as planned may arise. In these coordination problems, game-theoretic planning can be used to enhance the agentsÂż strategic behavior considering the interactions as part of the agentsÂż utility. In this work, we define a general-sum game in which interactions such as conflicts and congestions are reflected in the agentsÂż utility. We propose a better-response planning strategy that guarantees convergence to an equilibrium joint plan by imposing a tax to agents involved in conflicts. We apply our approach to a real-world problem in which agents are Electric Autonomous Vehicles (EAVs). The EAVs intend to find a joint plan that ensures their individual goals are achievable in a transportation scenario where congestion and conflicting situations may arise. Standardized Human Platelet Lysates as Adequate Substitute to Fetal Calf Serum in Endothelial Cell Culture for Tissue Engineering
Fetal calf serum (FCS) is used for in vitro cell culture, as it provides the cells with various growth-promoting compounds. For applications in humans, FCS does not meet the required safety standards and should be replaced by an appropriate substitute. This study analyzed the suitability of using human platelet lysate (hPL) as a substitute for FCS in endothelial cell cultures for in vitro and in vivo tissue engineering applications. The focus was placed on standardized, commercially available hPLs (MultiPL'30, MultiPL'100), which are approved for applications in humans, and compared to laboratory-prepared hPLs (lp-hLP). Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were cultured with FCS or with different hPLs. Cell morphology, proliferation, viability, apoptosis, and necrosis, as well as the organization of vascular structures, were assessed. No morphological changes were noticed when FCS was replaced by standardized hPLs in concentrations of 1-10%. In contrast, the use of lp-hLPs led to irregular cell shape and increased vacuolization of the cytoplasm. HUVEC proliferation and viability were not compromised by using media supplemented with standardized hPLs or pl-hPLs in concentrations of 1-10%, compared to cells grown in media supplemented with 20% FCS. The apoptosis rate using lp-hPLs was higher compared to the use of standardized hPLs. The necrosis rate tended to be lower when FCS was replaced by hPLs. HUVEC formed more pronounced capillary-like structures when the media were supplemented with hPLs instead of supplementation with FCS. Thus, compared to the use of FCS, the use of hPLs was beneficial for the growth and optimal expression of functional endothelial cell characteristics during in vitro experiments. Commercially available hPLs proved to be particularly suitable, as they led to reproducible results during in vitro experiments, while meeting the safety requirements for in vivo use
