    Celebrating the crisis of representation: foregrounding conjunctive and disjunctive relations in painting and sound installation

    Painting and multi-channel sound composition are combined in this practice-led PhD to generate installations that foreground an ongoing oscillation between conjunctive and disjunctive relations. While interactions between painting and sound practices have contributed to advances in their respective fields, the creation, analysis and curation of such work has often emphasised causal relationships. This study offers an expanded focus by bringing together painting and sound in ways that acknowledge equally the junctures and disjunctures between the mediums. The practical and theoretical considerations of this study have been framed by concepts drawn from the work of Friedrich Schlegel, Novalis and William James. Initially this study is informed by the Jena Romantics’ positive response to the crisis of representation brought about in Immanuel Kant’s work. Novalis’ proposition – to study foreign systems to better understand one’s own – is used to interpret conjunctive relations between painting and sound through the lens of transcription. Such conjunctive relationships are then rendered complex in installation, following Schlegel’s questioning of the possibility of representation and proposing instead endless deferral of resolution, ongoing contradiction and free play. Finally, James’ argument that experience consists of what he terms as both conjunctive and disjunctive relations, brings to prominence a complex understanding of the conceptual and the experienced in installations. This exegesis provides an overview of five key projects through which this practice-led research has developed. The philosophical and conceptual frameworks are used to interrogate these projects to allow consideration of sound and painting installation, informed by specific art historical and philosophical sources dealing with representation and experience. The practical contexts for the artworks are revealed through discussion of their relation to contemporary installation, painting and sound art practices. In developing a complex interplay and understanding of spatio-temporal and audio-visual fragments, this study seeks to celebrate the free play of experiencing suggested by the crisis of representation

    Ant Diversity in Two Southern Minnesota Tallgrass Prairie Restoration Sites

    There is little basic information about ant species richness and abundance in tall grass prairie restorations despite the importance of ants to plant community structure and function. We compared ant abundance and richness, vascular plant cover and richness, and soil compaction at two southern Minnesota grassland restoration sites, a prairie reconstruction and a prairie remnant undergoing rehabilitation. We collected a total of 3,523 ants from 12 different species. Plant species richness ranged from 45 in the prairie reconstruction to 95 in the remnant prairie. We found five more species of ants and significantly higher mean ant species richness per plot in the more heterogeneous prairie remnant with higher plant diversity, especially forbs, than in the prairie reconstruction where plant species diversity was lower. Our study found 10 new ant species records in Le Sueur and Nicollet counties, Minnesota. Because of the paucity of information about ant species in the upper Midwest, it is difficult to fully compare our results to those of other restored or natural areas in the area. Our study provides an important baseline census for two different types of tallgrass prairie restorations

    Reverse Logistics – Capturing Value in the Extended Supply Chain

    Product flows in today’s supply chains do not end once they have reached the customer. Many products lead a second and even third or fourth life after having accomplished their original task at their first customer. Consequently, a product may generate revenues multiple times, rather than a single time. Capturing this value requires a broadening of the supply chain perspective to include new processes, known as ‘reverse logistics’, as well as multiple interrelated usage cycles, linked by specific market interfaces. Coordinating the successive product uses is key to maximizing the value generated. In this chapter, we review the field of reverse logistics. We discuss its opportunities and its challenges and indicate potential ways for companies to master them. We highlight what makes reverse logistics different from ‘conventional’ supply chain processes, but also point out analogies, and explain how both views can be integrated into an extended supply chain concept. We illustrate our discussion with examples of reverse logistics practice at IBM

    Lipid and fatty acid turnover of the pteropods Limacina helicina, L. retroversa and Clione limacina from Svalbard waters

    This study aimed at a better understanding of the fatty acid (FA) turnover in Arctic pteropods. Thecosome pteropods, i.e. Limacina helicina (juveniles and adults) and L. retroversa (adults), were collected in summer/autumn in Kongsfjorden and Isfjorden (Svalbard, 78° N) and, for the first time, successfully fed with 13 C-labeled algae for 6 d. The gymnosome pteropod Clione limacina was sampled in summer in northern Svalbard and fed with 13 C-labeled L. retroversa for 23 d. FA compositions were determined by gas chromatography, and 13 C enrichment of FAs was analyzed by compound-specific isotope analysis. Among the thecosomes, maximum lipid turnover occurred in L. retroversa adults (1.3% d −1 ). L. helicina adults and juveniles showed lower lipid turnover rates (0.1 and 0.2% d −1 , respectively). The thecosomes exhibited the ability to assimilate omega-3 FAs (up to 8.0% d −1 ). The lipid turnover rate of C. limacina averaged at only 0.07% d −1 . However, C. limacina clearly showed the unusual capacity of de novo synthesis of odd-chain FAs (up to 1.2% d −1 ). Lipid turnover rates of pteropods were lower than those reported for Arctic copepods. However, pteropods may play a substantial role in the transfer of lipids to higher trophic levels, especially in autumn, when copepods have descended from the upper layers of the water column. The pteropods also showed the capacity to channel particular compounds such as omega-3 and odd-chain FAs, and therefore could be important for the functional diversity of the Arctic zooplankton community

    Shock Wave Response of Iron-based In Situ Metallic Glass Matrix Composites

    The response of amorphous steels to shock wave compression has been explored for the first time. Further, the effect of partial devitrification on the shock response of bulk metallic glasses is examined by conducting experiments on two iron-based in situ metallic glass matrix composites, containing varying amounts of crystalline precipitates, both with initial composition Fe_(49.7)Cr_(17.7)Mn_(1.9)Mo_(7.4)W_(1.6)B_(15.2)C_(3.8)Si_(2.4). The samples, designated SAM2X5-600 and SAM2X5-630, are X-ray amorphous and partially crystalline, respectively, due to differences in sintering parameters during sample preparation. Shock response is determined by making velocity measurements using interferometry techniques at the rear free surface of the samples, which have been subjected to impact from a high-velocity projectile launched from a powder gun. Experiments have yielded results indicating a Hugoniot Elastic Limit (HEL) to be 8.58 ± 0.53 GPa for SAM2X5-600 and 11.76 ± 1.26 GPa for SAM2X5-630. The latter HEL result is higher than elastic limits for any BMG reported in the literature thus far. SAM2X5-600 catastrophically loses post-yield strength whereas SAM2X5-630, while showing some strain-softening, retains strength beyond the HEL. The presence of crystallinity within the amorphous matrix is thus seen to significantly aid in strengthening the material as well as preserving material strength beyond yielding

    To Regulate or Not to Regulate: Assimilation of Dietary Fatty Acids in the Temperate Copepod Temora longicornis

    Consumer regulation of lipid composition during assimilation of dietary items is related to their ecology, habitat, and life cycle, and may lead to extra energetic costs associated with the conversion of dietary material into the fatty acids (FAs) necessary to meet metabolic requirements. For example, lipid-rich copepods from temperate and polar latitudes must convert assimilated dietary FAs into wax esters, an efficient type of energy storage which enables them to cope with seasonal food shortages and buoyancy requirements. Lipid-poor copepods, however, tend to not be as constrained by food availability as their lipid-rich counterparts and, thus, should have no need for modifying dietary FAs. Our objective was to test the assumption that Temora longicornis, a proxy species for lipid-poor copepods, does not regulate its lipid composition. Isotopically-enriched (13C) diatoms were fed to copepods during a 5-day laboratory experiment. Compound-specific stable isotope analysis of algae and copepod samples was performed in order to calculate dietary FA assimilation, turnover, and assimilation efficiency into copepod FAs. Approximately 65% of the total dietary lipid carbon (C) assimilated (913 ± 68 ng C ind-1 at the end of the experiment) was recorded as polyunsaturated FAs, with 20 and 15% recorded as saturated and monounsaturated FAs, respectively. As expected, T. longicornis assimilated dietary FAs in an unregulated, non-homeostatic manner, as evidenced by the changes in its FA profile, which became more similar to that of their diet. Copepods assimilated 11% of the total dietary C (or 40% of the dietary lipid C) ingested in the first two days of the experiment. In addition, 34% of their somatic growth (in C) after two days was due to the assimilation of dietary C in FAs. Global warming may lead to increased proportions of smaller copepods in the oceans, and to a lower availability of algae-produced essential FAs. In order for changes in the energy transfer in marine food webs to be better understood, it is important that future investigations assess a broader range of diets as well as lipid-poor zooplankton from oceanographic areas throughout the world’s oceans.</jats:p

    Ice-algal carbon supports harp and ringed seal diets in the European Arctic: evidence from fatty acid and stable isotope markers

    Sea-ice declines in the European Arctic have led to substantial changes in marine food webs. To better understand the biological implications of these changes, we quantified the contributions of ice-associated and pelagic carbon sources to the diets of Arctic harp and ringed seals using compound-specific stable isotope ratios of fatty acids in specific primary producer biomarkers derived from sea-ice algae and phytoplankton. Comparison of fatty acid patterns between these 2 seal species indicated clear dietary separation, while the compound-specific stable isotope ratios of the same fatty acids showed partial overlap. These findings suggest that harp and ringed seals target different prey sources, yet their prey rely on ice and pelagic primary production in similar ways. From Bayesian stable isotope mixing models, we estimated that relative contributions of sympagic and pelagic carbon in seal blubber was an average of 69% and 31% for harp seals, and 72% and 28% for ringed seals, respectively. The similarity in the Bayesian estimations also indicates overlapping carbon sourcing by these 2 species. Our findings demonstrate that the seasonal ice-associated carbon pathway contributes substantially to the diets of both harp and ringed seals

    Effect of Thermal Treatment on Corrosion Behavior of AISI 316L Stainless Steel Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

    The effect of post-processing heat treatment on the corrosion behavior of AISI 316L stainless steel manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is investigated in this work. Produced stainless steel was heat treated in a broad temperature range (from 200 °C to 1100 °C) in order to evaluate the electrochemical behavior and morphology of corrosion. The electrochemical behavior was investigated by potentiodynamic and galvanostatic polarization in a neutral and acidic (pH 1.8) 3.5% NaCl solution. The microstructure modification after heat treatment and the morphology of attack of corroded samples were evaluated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The fine cellular/columnar microstructure typically observed for additive-manufactured stainless steel evolves into a fine equiaxed austenitic structure after thermal treatment at high temperatures (above 800 °C). The post-processing thermal treatment does not negatively affect the electrochemical behavior of additive-manufactured stainless steel even after prolonged heat treatment at 1100 °C for 8 h and 24 h. This indicates that the excellent barrier properties of the native oxide film are retained after heat treatment
