    Esta publicación es el producto del trabajo de los miembros del Grupo de Investigación 3080 de la Junta de Andalucía. El Grupo se constituyó formalmente en el año 1986, para dedicarse al estudio e investigación básica en Neurocirugía Funcional, siguiendo de esta forma los líneas de trabajo emprendidas años atrás por varios de sus miembros. Por motivos obvios, el trabajo del Grupo implica el uso de la rata como animal de experimentación y del microscopio quirúrgico para realizar las diferentes técnicas experimentales que supongan la manipulación de las estructuras nerviosas y vasculares del animal. El enfoque de la obra es consecuencia de este planteamiento, habiéndose recopilado las diferentes técnicas experimentales microquirúrgicas de interés en Neurociencias, precedidas de su fundamento de anatomía microquirúrgica y seguidas de una serie de procedimientos cuyo objetivo es valorar la técnica realizada. Se trata pues de aportar al investigador en Neurociencias un conjunto de elementos básicos para el diseño de experiencias con las que testar sus hipótesis de trabajo

    Artritis séptica de hombro: caso clínico en varón joven

    La artritis séptica de hombro en adultos es poco frecuente, representando aproximadamente un 3% de todas las artritis sépticas. Con frecuencia se diagnostica tardíamente con lo que se compromete el resultado final. Se presenta el caso de un varón de 15 años de edad que acudió a urgencias hospitalarias por dolor intenso e impotencia funcional del hombro izquierdo, tumefacción y aumento de la temperatura local. Como antecedente refería haber realizado un esfuerzo físico unos días antes. Pese a la inespecificidad de los resultados de las pruebas realizadas en urgencias, clínicamente se sospechó una artritis séptica de hombro, confirmándose el diagnóstico mediante RM y punción, y realizándose tratamiento antibiótico precoz y limpieza artroscópica. El paciente evolucionó satisfactoriamente con recuperación completa. A propósito del mismo revisamos las claves para el diagnóstico y tratamiento actuales de esta patología.Septic arthritis of the shoulder in adults is an unusual disease (only 3 % of all septic arthritis). Diagnosis is usually made too late, thus interfering in the last result. We report a clinical case in a fifteen years old man who went to the emergency room relating a great pain and difficult movement in his left shoulder, which was swelling and warm. He had made an effort some days before. The initial studies results in the emergency room were normal but clinically we suspected a septic arthritis of the glenohumeral joint. This diagnosis was ratified with RM and punture of the joint. We carried out a treatment consisting of early antibiotic therapy and arthroscopic cleaning. The patient goes on satisfactorily with complete recovery. Thereafter we review the present diagnosis and treatment of this entity

El osteocondroma espinal sintomático es una lesión neoplásica benigna poco frecuente y cuyo tratamiento de elección es la extirpación quirúrgica.A case of solitary spinal osteochondroma growing from the left L4 lamina, close to the facet joint, is presented. The tumor produced a stenosis of the left lateral recess and the patient suffered from low-back and sciatic pain. Symptomatic spinal osteochondroma is a rare beningn tumor, surgical removal being the most useful treatment

    This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe

    Sepiolite-Hydrogels: Synthesis by Ultrasound Irradiation and Their Use for the Preparation of Functional Clay-Based Nanoarchitectured Materials

    Sepiolite and palygorskite fibrous clay minerals are 1D silicates featuring unique textural and structural characteristics useful in diverse applications, and in particular as rheological additives. Here we report on the ability of grinded sepiolite to generate highly viscous and stable hydrogels by sonomechanical irradiation (ultrasounds). Adequate drying of such hydrogels leads to low-density xerogels that show extensive fiber disaggregation compared to the starting sepiolite—whose fibers are agglomerated as bundles. Upon re-dispersion in water under high-speed shear, these xerogels show comparable rheological properties to commercially available defibrillated sepiolite products, resulting in high viscosity hydrogels that minimize syneresis. These colloidal systems are thus very interesting as they can be used to stabilize many diverse compounds as well as nano-/micro-particles, leading to the production of a large variety of composites and nano/micro-architectured solids. In this context, we report here various examples showing how colloidal routes based on sepiolite hydrogels can be used to obtain new heterostructured functional materials, based on their assembly to solids of diverse topology and composition such as 2D and 1D kaolinite and halloysite aluminosilicates, as well as to the 2D synthetic Mg,Al-layered double hydroxides (LDH)

    Experiences of learning through collaborative evaluation from a masters programme in professional education

    This paper presents findings from a collaborative evaluation project within a masters programme in professional education. The project aimed to increase knowledge of research methodologies and methods through authentic learning where participants worked in partnership with the tutor to evaluate the module which they were studying. The project processes, areas of the course evaluated and the data collection methods are outlined. The findings focus on key themes from evaluating the effectiveness of using a collaborative evaluation approach, including: enhanced student engagement; creativity of the collaborative evaluation approach; equality between the tutor and students; and enhanced research skills. Discussion focuses on the outcomes and effectiveness of the project and tutor reflections on adopting a collaborative approach. This paper highlights lessons from the project relevant to those interested in staff-student partnership approaches and those facilitating postgraduate learning and teaching programmes and educational research courses

    A study of cadmium yellow paints from Joan Miró’s paintings and studio materials preserved at the Fundació Miró Mallorca

    The deterioration of cadmium yellow paints in artworks by Joan Miró (1893–1983) and in painting materials from his studios in Mallorca (Spain) was investigated. Analysis of samples from Miró’s paintings and from paint tubes and palettes showed that degraded paints are composed of poorly crystalline cadmium sulfide/zinc cadmium sulfide (CdS/Cd1−xZnxS) with a low percentage of zinc, in an oil binding medium. Cadmium sulfates were identified as the main deterioration products, forming superficial white crusts detected using SR μXANES and μXRD techniques. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements demonstrated that highly degraded samples display a pink/orange emission from the paint surface with a microsecond lifetime, a phenomenon observed in other degraded cadmium yellow paints. In agreement with recent studies on altered cadmium paints, these results suggest that the stability of the paint is related to its manufacturing method, which affects the degree of crystallinity of the resulting pigment. This, together with the environmental conditions in which artworks have been exposed, have induced the degradation of yellow paints in Miró’s artworks. It was finally noted that the paints exhibiting alteration in the analysed Miró artworks have a chemical composition that is very similar to the tube paint ‘Cadmium Yellow Lemon No. 1’ produced by Lucien Lefebvre-Foinet. Indeed, paint tubes from this brand were found in the studio, linking the use of this product with Miro’s degraded artworks

    Attitudes toward Corporate Responsibilities in Western Europe and in Central And East Europe

    This study investigated the attitudes toward social, economic, and environmental corporate responsibilities of 3064 current managers and business students in 8 European countries. Participants in Western European countries had significantly different perspectives on the importance of these corporate responsibilities (CR) than those in Central and East European countries. Within each country, environmental CR is perceived as most important in both CEE and Western European countries. Across countries, Western European respondents accord more importance to social CR and less importance to economic CR. CEE countries are not homogenous, e.g., CR attitudes in the Czech Republic are closer to that of Western Europeans, possibly triggered by the accession to EU. Work experience (managers vs. business students) influences social and environmental orientations more than the economic orientation for only some countries. Generational differences were found as well: Business students attribute more importance to environmental CR and less importance to social CR than managers

    Copper−Cystine Biohybrid-Embedded Nanofiber Aerogels Show Antibacterial and Angiogenic Properties

    Copper−cystine-based high aspect ratio structures (CuHARS) possess exceptional physical and chemical properties and exhibit remarkable biodegradability in human physiological conditions. Extensive testing has confirmed the biocompatibility and biodegradability of CuHARS under diverse biological conditions, making them a viable source of essential Cu2+. These ions are vital for catalyzing the production of nitric oxide (NO) from the decomposition of Snitrosothiols (RSNOs) found in human blood. The ability of CuHARS to act as a Cu2+ donor under specific concentrations has been demonstrated in this study, resulting in the generation of elevated levels of NO. Consequently, this dual function makes CuHARS effective as both a bactericidal agent and a promoter of angiogenesis. In vitro experiments have shown that CuHARS actively promotes the migration and formation of complete lumens by redirecting microvascular endothelial cells. To maximize the benefits of CuHARS, they have been incorporated into biomimetic electrospun poly(ε- caprolactone)/gelatin nanofiber aerogels. Through the regulated release of Cu2+ and NO production, these channeled aerogels not only provide antibacterial support but also promote angiogenesis. Taken together, the inclusion of CuHARS in biomimetic scaffolds could hold great promise in revolutionizing tissue regeneration and wound healing
