10 páginas, 3 tablas, 2 figuras.-- The final publication is available at www.springerlink.comA packaging system combining a polyphenolrich film and vacuum (PPRF–VP) was applied to farmed coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) muscle for an 18- month storage (−18 °C). For it, two different concentrations of polyphenol compounds (namely, p-coumaric and ferulic acids) obtained from a barley husk extract were applied (PPRF–VP conditions) and compared to vacuum packaging without polyphenol presence (vacuum control; VP condition) and to packaging in the absence of vacuum and polyphenols (control; CP condition). The study was addressed to lipid hydrolysis and oxidation development and to lipid changes related to nutritional value. Both PPRF–VP conditions provided an inhibitory effect (p< 0.05) on conjugated diene and fluorescent compound formation in frozen salmon. Compared to CP condition, vacuum packaging (PPRF–VP and VP conditions) led to lower (p<0.05) peroxide and anisidine values and to an inhibitory effect (p<0.05) on α- and γ-tocopherol losses. No effect (p>0.05) of polyphenol presence and vacuum packaging could be inferred on free fatty acid formation (hydrolysis development) and on polyunsaturated fatty acid retention (polyene index assessment). A low rancid odour development was observed in all kinds of fish samples, this being lower (p<0.05) in fish kept under vacuum (PPRF–VP and VP) conditions.Peer reviewe

Microscale generation of entangled photons without momentum conservation

We report, for the first time, the generation of entangled photon pairs via type-0 spontaneous parametric down conversion in an ultra-thin wafer of lithium niobate in which momentum between the pump photon and daughter photons is not conserved. The characteristics of the emission are investigated using several techniques. We find that non-phase matched SPDC is a promising source of ultra-broadband two photon radiation that exhibits remarkably tight correlation widths in both the spatial and temporal domains.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Lipid Oxidation Inhibition in Frozen Farmed Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch ): Effect of Packaging

3 pages, 1 table.Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) has recently attracted a great interest as a farmed product. This research focuses on its commercialisation as a frozen product. For it, an advanced storage technology combining vacuum and a polyphenolic rich-film was applied for a 9-months storage period (–18°C). The study was addressed to lipid hydrolysis and oxidation changes and to endogenous antioxidant content in salmon muscle. No effect of packaging conditions could be observed on free fatty acid formation. However, vacuum packaging conditions provided a partial inhibition of primary (peroxide) and secondary (anisidine value) lipid oxidation development; this inhibitory effect was accompanied by a lower tocopherol isomers loss. The employment of a film including polyphenolic compounds led to a partial inhibition of α-tocopherol breakdown and to a lower secondary (anisidine value) and tertiary (fluorescent compound formation) lipid oxidation development. A partial inhibitory effect on lipid oxidation development is concluded for the employment of a polyphenolic compound rich-film packaging when applied to farmed coho salmon. This research was carried out in the frame of the Project No. 2006 CL 0034 (2007–2008), granted by the U. Chile-CSIC Cooperation Program. Coho salmon fish was provided by Aquachile SA (Puerto Montt, Chile).Peer reviewe

Generation of Bioelectricity Using Molasses as Fuel in Microbial Fuel Cells

The large amount of molasses that are generated in sugar-processing companies are not always redistributed for commercialization in by-products. Because of this, the present research uses these wastes as fuel in low-cost, lab-scale, single-chamber microbial fuel cells. Zinc and copper electrodes were used as electrodes and 100 mL of molasse in the chamber as fuel, managing to generate current and voltage peaks of 1.73 ± 0.13 mA and 0.953 ± 0.142 V. In monitoring the conductivity of the substrate, a maximum peak of 111.156 ± 8.45 mS/cm was observed, and a slightly acidic pH was observed throughout the monitoring. It was possible to obtain a power density of 5.45 ± 0.31 W/cm2 for a current density of 308.06 mA/cm2, while the yeast count showed a logarithmic curve throughout the monitoring. Finally, the molecular technique identified 100% of the special C. boidinii present in the anodic electrode. This research will give great benefits to sugar companies because they will be able to generate electricity using the molasses that cannot generate by-products

EQ-5D-5L Health-State Values for the Mexican Population.

OBJECTIVE: To generate a value set for the Mexican adult general population to support and facilitate the inclusion of quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) into the health technology assessment process of the Mexican healthcare authorities. METHODS: A representative sample of the Mexican adult population stratified by age, sex and socio-economic status was used. Following version 2.0 of the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L valuation protocol, trained interviewers guided participants in completing composite time trade-off (cTTO) and discrete-choice experiment (DCE) tasks included in the EQ-VT software. Generalized least squares, Tobit and Bayesian models were used for cTTO data. The choice of value set model was based on criteria that included: theoretical considerations, parsimony, logical ordering of coefficients, and statistical significance. RESULTS: Based on quality control criteria and interviewer judgment, 1000 out of 1032 participants provided useable responses. Participants' demographic characteristics were similar to the 2010 Mexican Population Census and followed the socioeconomic structure defined by the Mexican Association of Marketing Research and Public Opinion Agencies (AMAI). The predicted index values in the final cTTO model (a heteroscedastic censored model with Bayesian estimation) ranged from - 0.5960 to 1, with 19.7% of all predicted health state scores less than 0 (i.e., worse than dead). CONCLUSION: This study has generated the first value set representing the stated preferences of the Mexican adult population for use in estimating QALYs. The resulting EQ-5D-5L value set is technically robust and will facilitate health economic analyses as well as quality-of-life studies
