This Is Hardcore: Why the Court Should Have Granted a Writ of Mandamus Compelling Mandatory Condom Use to Decrease Transmission of HIV and STDs in the Adult Film Industry

    Get PDF
The article discusses the U.S. adult film industry as of September 2012, focusing on a call for the courts to issue a writ of mandamus requiring the industry to force film participants to use condoms to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases. The author argues that the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health abused its discretion as a government agency by failing to protect the health of adult film industry participants such as actor Derrick Burts

Evaluation of two reference planes to the horizon in the natural head position

    Get PDF
Dental casts are mounted to dental articulators using anatomical records in order to simulate and duplicate static and dynamic interocclusal relationships. The three dimensional relationship of the maxillary arch to the transverse horizontal axis of the mandible is defined by establishing a third point of reference. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the Frankfort horizontal plane and the HIP plane to the horizontal when the patient is in the natural head position. Ten subjects were evaluated in the natural head position with angular measurements made from lateral photographs and lateral skull radiographs to determine the relationship of these two reference planes to the true horizontal plane. The mean, standard deviation and coefficient variation were calculated for both reference planes. The clinical significance of this information is to verify or modify those techniques used for mounting dental casts to the dental articulator, which is used in treatment planning and laboratory procedures

Complementary stereotyping of ethnic minorities predicts system justification in Poland

We investigate the phenomenon of complementary stereotyping of ethnic minorities in Poland and its relationship to system justification. Using results from a nationally representative survey we test the hypothesis that complementary stereotypes—according to which ethnic minorities are seen as possessing distinctive, offsetting strengths and weaknesses—would be associated with system justification among Polish majority citizens. For four minorities, results indicated that stereotyping them as (a) low in morality but high in competence or (b) high in morality but low in competence predicted greater system justification. These results suggest that even in a context that is low in support for the status quo, complementary stereotyping of ethnic minorities is linked to system justification processes. For the three minority groups that were lowest in social status, complementary stereotyping was unrelated to system justification. It appears that negative attitude towards these groups can be expressed openly, regardless of one’s degree of system justification

The Impediments to Nigeria Understanding Oil Production Volumes, Losses and Potential Solutions

    Get PDF
The issue of the quantity of oil produced or missing has traditionally been played down in Nigeria. This is evident as no one in or outside Nigeria is able to quote a totally reliable production volume or loss figure. The aim of this study is thus to search for the root causes as to why there are difficulties in ascertaining the quantity of crude oil produced or missing per day and for potential solutions. The research assesses the present situation and problems requiring solution concerning Nigerian oil and gas measurement control. This is achieved through an intensive review of each of the notified bodies responsible for Nigeria’s oil and gas measurement control, using secondary resources. The bodies reviewed in this study are the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Weights and Measures Department. The study has identified knowledge impediments among the designated bodies. Also discovered were inadequate measurement equipment and absence of measurement guidelines, thus, no mechanisms were in place to address any mismeasurements or losses that are discovered. Provision of comprehensive training to the regulatory body to provide it with the necessary “teeth” to ensure effective delivery of it regulatory function has therefore been recommended as the key solution

Facilitators and barriers to contact between asylum seekers and their Dutch neighbors

    Get PDF
Currently, Europe is dealing with a large number of asylum seekers. A recent report show that attitudes toward asylum seekers are not that negative in the Netherlands, and yet Dutch citizens living close to asylum seeker centers barely have contact with them. Because contact is vital for a multicultural society, we investigated the facilitators and barriers for Dutch citizens to establish and maintain contact with asylum seekers where they live close together. We conducted semistructured interviews with Dutch people and analyzed them using thematic analysis. We found four themes: Physical possibilities for Contact, Goals for Contact, Social Identities, and Positivity and Openness, and proposed a grounded theory model based on how the themes are related. The findings are discussed in relation to debates on multiculturalism and intergroup tolerance, and can be used to improve the integration policies by local governments, because they present clear conditions and practical information as to how contact can be established and maintained

Ten myths about character, virtue and virtue education – plus three well-founded misgivings

    Get PDF
Initiatives to cultivate character and virtue in moral education at school continue to provoke sceptical responses. Most of those echo familiar misgivings about the notions of character, virtue and education in virtue – as unclear, redundant, old-fashioned, religious, paternalistic, anti-democratic, conservative, individualistic, relative and situation dependent. I expose those misgivings as ‘myths’, while at the same time acknowledging three better-founded historical, methodological and practical concerns about the notions in question

AC-coupled GaAs microstrip detectors with a new type of integrated bias resistors

    Get PDF
Full size single-sided GaAs microstrip detectors with integrated coupling capacitors and bias resistors have been fabricated on 3'' substrate wafers. PECVD deposited SiO_2 and SiO_2/Si_3N_4 layers were used to provide coupling capacitaces of 32.5 pF/cm and 61.6 pF/cm, respectively. The resistors are made of sputtered CERMET using simple lift of technique. The sheet resistivity of 78 kOhm/sq. and the thermal coefficient of resistance of less than 4x10^-3 / degree C satisfy the demands of small area biasing resistors, working on a wide temperature range.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, to be published in NIM
