Mucinaea (Hyacinthaceae-Urgineoideae), a Remarkable New Genus from Namaqualand (Northern Cape Province, South Africa)
We here describe a new genus from Namaqualand, which is based on Tenicroa nana Snijman. Mucinaea M. Pinter, Mart.-AzorÃn, U. Müll.-Doblies, D. Müll.- Doblies, Pfosser & Wetschnig gen. nov. shows several character-states different from all other known species of Tenicroa and a few even do not occur in any other genus of Hyacinthaceae. Mucinaea M. Pinter & al. is easily distinguishable by its purplish-pink tepals bearing a double-eyed green floral marking at their base, surrounded by a white margin, unique within Hyacinthaceae. It also differs by the single sheathing cataphyll without raised transverse ribs, different from the other species of Tenicroa, and by the second sheath consisting of a compound of the bases of about ten foliage leaves, surrounding about ten further free foliage leaves, what is a unique structure in the bulbous world. Mucinaea with Mucinaea nana (Snijman) M. Pinter & al. comb. nova is a monotypic genus, only known from three quarter - degree squares in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Data on morphology, ecology and distribution are given. Additionally, this separation leads to the monophyly of the genus Tenicroa
Taxonomic clarification in W-Mediterranean Androcymbium (Colchicaceae): A. wyssianum sunk in the synonymy of A.gramineum and A.europaeum restored
Capsule dehiscence has been used as a diagnostic character for W Mediterranean species of Androcymbium. Depending on the state of capsule maturity, the character, however, can be ambiguous in herbarium material. Based on morphological, phenological and cpDNA characters it is shown that misinterpretation of the capsule as indehiscent in the type material of A. gramineum has led to serious taxonomic confusion. The combined analyses produced evidence that A. gramineum of the population from the type locality at Essaouira, Morocco, is conspecific with A. wyssianum. A. gramineum is therefore the correct name for the species with dehiscent capsules, whereas the populations with indehiscent capsules at the Atlantic coast north of Essaouira and in SE Spain represent a second species, which is correctly named A. europaeu
Studies on tribal systematics of Amaryllidoideae. 1. The systematic position of Lapiedra Lag
On the basis of extensive investigations of bulb morphology and a re-vision of the floral characters, a modified classification of the Mediterranean Amarylli-doideae is proposed (table 2). This treatment differs from that of TRAUB (1970) in that the genus Vagaria is restored and the genus Hannonia transferred from the Galantheae to the Pancratieae. The tribe Galantheae is reduced to a subtribe of the Narcisseae. The most important change, however, is the transfer of La piedra from the Galantheae to the Pancratieae and the establishment of a new subtribe: Lapiedrina
