    An inquiry into the drivers of an entrepreneurial economy: A Bayesian clustering approach

    Understanding the worldwide drivers of qualified entrepreneurship is a key issue in economic policy design. To help policy decisions exert their intended impact, we aim to cluster a wide range of countries on the basis of their levels and trends in selfemployment productivity using a finite mixture model applied to a new large dataset of 121 countries covering the period of 1991–2019. Our results point to three groups of high-, medium-, and low-productive means and tendencies, the geographical distribution of which suggests that they can be reinterpreted using the three stages of economic development, namely, innovation-, efficiency-, and factor-driven economies. Notably, we find that widespread digitalization and low unemployment enhance the probability of transitioning into a highly productive cluster. However, we failed to find that industry weight or employment protection legislation strictness serve as determinants in the transition between groups. Suggestive rationales for these results and implications for the entrepreneurship policy agenda are also provided.Funding for open access publishing: Universidad de Huelva/CBUA.     Maitake Pro4X has anti-cancer activity and prevents oncogenesis in BALBc mice

    The understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the immune tolerance induced by the tumoral microenvironment is fundamental to prevent cancer development or to treat cancer patients using immunotherapy. Actually, there are investigations about "addressed-drugs" against cancer cells without affecting normal cells. It could be ideal to find selective and specific compounds that only recognize and destroy tumor cells without damaging the host normal cells. For thousands of years, mushrooms have been used for medicinal purposes because of their curative properties. D-Fraction, an extract of Maitake (from the edible Grifola frondosa mushroom), rich in β-glucans, exert notable effects in the immune system. Until now, some published articles suggest that Maitake D-Fraction could have anti-tumoral activity, prevent oncogenesis and metastasis in some tumor types. However, there are no clear data about Maitake D-Fraction action on breast cancer prevention and its exact molecular mechanisms are not yet elucidated. The experiments were performed employing 25 female BALBc mice that were treated with and without Maitake D-Fraction Pro4X or Maitake Standard for 15 days by daily intraperitoneal injection. After treatment period, all mice were implanted with murine tumor cells LM3 to induce mammary tumorigenesis. Animals were checked weekly and killed after 46 days of LM3 transplant; percentage of cancer prevention, rate of tumor growing, and overall survival were determined. Under dissection, the internal organs were evaluated histologically and genetically by RT-PCR. We found that 5 mg/kg per day of Maitake D-Fraction Pro4X, administered dairy during 15 days to BALBc mice was able to block more than 60% breast cancer development. However, Maitake Standard prevents oncogenesis in 26% to respect control. In this work, we found that Maitake D-Fraction Pro4X, administered to BALBc mice, prevents breast carcinogenesis, block tumor invasiveness, reduce angiogenesis, and increase overall survival.Fil: Roldan Deamicis, Agustina.     El Perú tiene una diversidad de microclimas que permite la producción de diferentes productos alimenticios de excelente calidad. Los micro productores que laboran en esta diversidad conservan técnicas ancestrales con calidad y pasión por su trabajo. Estos productos llegan de manera escasa a los consumidores que los prefieren por la falta de conexión de los micro productores a estos mercados, así mismo se observa que no existe pago justo (equitativo) a los micro productores por lo que se ven obligados a vender a bajo precio afectando su economía y calidad de vida. Nuestro proyecto se presenta como un modelo de negocio sostenible que conecta y desarrolla a los mejores micro productores con mercados que valoren los atributos de: natural, orgánicos, artesanales y regional. Nuestra solución consiste en formar una alianza estratégica con los micro productores asegurándoles un pago equitativo y atractivo, capacitaciones constantes que aseguren y mejoren la calidad de sus productos y el desarrollo de un sistema logístico idóneo para el sector. +Natural Arequipa, cuenta con canales físicos y virtuales que consolida en un solo espacio los mejores productos; estas acciones serán impulsadas por un plan de marketing con una factibilidad operativa del 55%. Esta solución contribuye a las ODS 1,2, y 8 con procesos desarrollados para hacer una empresa sostenible y escalable en el tiempo. El presente trabajo requiere una inversión S/. 558,901.92. La evaluación económica demuestra que este proyecto es financieramente viable con un VAN de 1,044,081.39evaluadoenunperiododecincoan~os.AsıˊmismolaevaluacioˊnsocialdemuestraqueesteproyectoessocialmenteviableysostenibleconVANS 1,044,081.39 evaluado en un periodo de cinco años. Así mismo la evaluación social demuestra que este proyecto es socialmente viable y sostenible con VANS 666,482.21.Perú has a diversity of microclimates that allows the production of different food products of excellent quality. The micro-producers who work in this diversity preserve ancestral techniques with quality and passion for their work. These products barely reach the consumers who prefer them, due to the lack of connection of the micro producers to these markets, likewise it is observed that there is no fair payment (equitable) to the micro producers for what they are forced to sell at a low price affecting their economy and quality of life. Our project is presented as a sustainable business model that connects and develops the best micro producers with markets that value the attributes of: Natural, organic, artisanal and regional. Our solution consists of forming a strategic alliance with micro producers, assuring them a fair and attractive payment, constant training that ensures and improves the quality of their products, and the development of an ideal logistics system for the sector. +Natural Arequipa, has physical and virtual channels that consolidate the best products in a single space; these actions will be driven by a marketing plan with an operational feasibility of 55%. This solution contributes to ODS 1,2, and 8 with processes developed to make a company sustainable and scalable over time. This work requires an investment of S/. 558,901.92.     Accessing and managing open medical resources in Africa over the Internet

    Recent commentaries have proposed the advantages of using open exchange of data and informatics resources for improving health-related policies and patient care in Africa. Yet, in many African regions, both private medical and public health information systems are still unaffordable. Open exchange over the social Web 2.0 could encourage more altruistic support of medical initiatives. We have carried out some experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of using this approach to disseminate open data and informatics resources in Africa. After the experiments we developed the AFRICA BUILD Portal, the first Social Network for African biomedical researchers. Through the AFRICA BUILD Portal users can access in a transparent way to several resources. Currently, over 600 researchers are using distributed and open resources through this platform committed to low connections

    BRCA1 polymorphism in breast cancer patients from Argentina

    Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in females in Argentina, with an incidence rate similar to that in the USA. However, the contribution of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation in breast cancer incidence has not yet been investigated in Argentina. In order to evaluate which BRCA1 polymorphisms or mutations characterize female breast cancer in Argentina, the current study enrolled 206 females with breast cancer from several hospitals from the southeast of Argentina. A buccal smear sample was obtained in duplicate from each patient and the DNA samples were processed for polymorphism analysis using the single-strand conformational polymorphism technique. The polymorphisms in BRCA1 were investigated using a combination of 15 primers to analyze exons 2, 3, 5, 20 and 11 (including the 11.1 to 11.12 regions). The BRCA1 mutations were confirmed by direct sequencing. Samples were successfully examined from 154 females and, among these, 16 mutations were identified in the BRCA1 gene representing 13.9% of the samples analyzed. One patient was identified with a polymorphism in exon 2 (0.86%), four in exon 20 (3.48%), four in exon 11.3 (3.48%), one in exon 11.7 (0.86%), two in exon 11.8 (1.74%), one in exon 11.10 (0.86%) and one in exon 11.11 (0.86%). The most prevalent alteration in BRCA1 was located in exon 11 (11 out of 16 patients; 68.75%). The objective of our next study is to evaluate the prevalence of mutations in the BRCA2 gene and analyze the BRCA1 gene in the healthy relatives of BRCA1 mutation carriers.Fil: Jaure, Omar David Argentino.     Breast feeding, parity and breast cancer subtypes in a Spanish cohort

    Background: Differences in the incidence and outcome of breast cancer among Hispanic women compared with white women are well documented and are likely explained by ethnic differences in genetic composition, lifestyle, or environmental exposures. METHODOLGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A population-based study was conducted in Galicia, Spain. A total of 510 women diagnosed with operable invasive breast cancer between 1997 and 2010 participated in the study. Data on demographics, breast cancer risk factors, and clinico-pathological characteristics were collected. The different breast cancer tumor subtypes were compared on their clinico-pathological characteristics and risk factor profiles, particularly reproductive variables and breastfeeding. Among the 501 breast cancer patients (with known ER and PR receptors), 85% were ER+/PR+ and 15% were ER-&PR-. Among the 405 breast cancer with known ER, PR and HER2 status, 71% were ER+/PR+/HER2- (luminal A), 14% were ER+/PR+/HER2+ (luminal B), 10% were ER-/PR-/HER2- (triple negative breast cancer, TNBC), and 5% were ER-/PR-/HER2+ (non-luminal). A lifetime breastfeeding period equal to or longer than 7 months was less frequent in case patients with TNBC (OR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.08-0.68) compared to luminal A breast cancers. Both a low (2 or fewer pregnancies) and a high (3-4 pregnancies) number of pregnancies combined with a long breastfeeding period were associated with reduced odds of TNBC compared with luminal A breast cancer, although the association seemed to be slightly more pronounced among women with a low number of pregnancies (OR = 0.09, 95% CI = 0.005-0.54). Conclusions/significance: In case-case analyses with the luminal A cases as the reference group, we observed a lower proportion of TNBC among women who breastfed 7 or more months. The combination of longer breastfeeding duration and lower parity seemed to further reduce the odds of having a TNBC compared to a luminal A breast cancer

    Effects of Anti-IL-17 on Inflammation, Remodeling, and Oxidative Stress in an Experimental Model of Asthma Exacerbated by LPS

    Inflammation plays a central role in the development of asthma, which is considered an allergic disease with a classic Th2 inflammatory profile. However, cytokine IL-17 has been examined to better understand the pathophysiology of this disease. Severe asthmatic patients experience frequent exacerbations, leading to infection, and subsequently show altered levels of inflammation that are unlikely to be due to the Th2 immune response alone. This study estimates the effects of anti-IL-17 therapy in the pulmonary parenchyma in a murine asthma model exacerbated by LPS. BALB/c mice were sensitized with intraperitoneal ovalbumin and repeatedly exposed to inhalation with ovalbumin, followed by treatment with or without anti-IL-17. Twenty-four hours prior to the end of the 29-day experimental protocol, the two groups received LPS (0.1 mg/ml intratracheal OVA-LPS and OVA-LPS IL-17). We subsequently evaluated bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, performed a lung tissue morphometric analysis, and measured IL-6 gene expression. OVA-LPS-treated animals treated with anti-IL-17 showed decreased pulmonary inflammation, edema, oxidative stress, and extracellular matrix remodeling compared to the non-treated OVA and OVA-LPS groups (p < 0.05). The anti-IL-17 treatment also decreased the numbers of dendritic cells, FOXP3, NF-kappa B, and Rho kinase 1-and 2-positive cells compared to the non-treated OVA and OVA-LPS groups (p < 0.05).
