    Nonlinear trend stationarity of real exchange rates: the case of the Mediterranean countries

    The aim of this article is to provide additional evidence on the fulfilment of the Purchasing Power Parity hypothesis in the so-called Mediterranean countries. In order to test for the empirical validity of such hypothesis, we have applied two types of unit root tests. The first group is due to Bierens (1997) who generalizes the alternative hypothesis to nonlinear trend stationariry and, the second is the Leybourne, Newbold and Vougas (1998) approach that uses a nonlinear specification for the intercept and slope in order to detrend the series. The results suggest that the evidence in favour of the Purchasing Power Parity hypothesis increases when we allow for nonlinear alternatives

    The Approach and Techniques Used by the Teacher in Teaching Grammar in the Tenth Grade

    This thesis aimed to find out the approach and techniques used by the teacher in teaching in the tenth grade of Senior High School in Grammar class. The participants in this study were one English teacher and seventeen students in the tenth grade. The theory applied was the theory of Approach in teaching grammar by Thornburry (1999) and the techniques in teaching grammar by Thornburry (2002). The approach used is qualitative approach. The source of data was collected by video recording. The data were the teacher's utterances in the classroom which are related to the topics discussed in the class which is simple past tense. The finding revealed that the teacher used deductive approach. There were five techniques used by the teacher, namely providing input, facilitating interaction, providing output opportunities, providing feedback and motivating learners. However, there was one technique that was not used, namely facilitating item learning

    The treatment of distressed banks.

    This article suggests some reforms of regulatory architecture for the treatment of distressed banks. Our main recommendations are: ‱ a special bankruptcy regime for banks should be implemented ; ‱ strong, truly independent supervisory agencies should be established ; ‱ the incentives of the top managers of distressed banks should not be kept unchecked ; ‱ procyclicality of solvency regulations should be dampened by the introduction of “automatic stabilisers” ; ‱ one should move toward centralised supervision in economic areas which are meant to be integrated.

    The streamwise turbulence intensity in the intermediate layer of turbulent pipe flow

    The spectral model of Perry et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 165, 1986, pp. 163–199) predicts that the integral length scale varies very slowly with distance to the wall in the intermediate layer. The only way for the integral length scale’s variation to be more realistic while keeping with the Townsend–Perry attached eddy spectrum is to add a new wavenumber range to the model at wavenumbers smaller than that spectrum. This necessary addition can also account for the high-Reynolds-number outer peak of the turbulent kinetic energy in the intermediate layer. An analytic expression is obtained for this outer peak in agreement with extremely high-Reynolds-number data by Hultmark et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 108, 2012, 094501; J. Fluid Mech., vol. 728, 2013, pp. 376–395). Townsend’s (The Structure of Turbulent Shear Flows, 1976, Cambridge University Press) production–dissipation balance and the finding of Dallas et al. (Phys. Rev. E, vol. 80, 2009, 046306) that, in the intermediate layer, the eddy turnover time scales with skin friction velocity and distance to the wall implies that the logarithmic derivative of the mean flow has an outer peak at the same location as the turbulent kinetic energy. This is seen in the data of Hultmark et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 108, 2012, 094501; J. Fluid Mech., vol. 728, 2013, pp. 376–395). The same approach also predicts that the logarithmic derivative of the mean flow has a logarithmic decay at distances to the wall larger than the position of the outer peak. This qualitative prediction is also supported by the aforementioned data

    The benefit of high-conductivity materials in film cooled turbine nozzles

    This study presents an experimental and numerical investigation of the beneficial effect of higher conductivity materials in HP turbine nozzles. Most of the literature studies focus on the maximum temperature that a nozzle can withstand, whereas the effect of thermal gradients is often neglected. However thermal gradients have higher influence on the life of the components and they have to be given careful consideration. In this work it is shown that thermal gradients are reduced by using high conductivity materials and, as a consequence, the nozzles life is appreciably increased. A representative film cooled leading edge with an internal impingement plate was studied experimentally at Texas AM University. Two materials were used, namely polycarbonate and stainless steel, in order to highlight the impact of conduction on coolant effectiveness. Numerically conjugate heat transfer simulations have been carried out with an in house solver to analyse in detail the impact of conduction and internal convection. Both experimental and numerical results show that by increasing the conductivity in the solid region, the thermal gradients are strongly reduced. Numerically it is shown that using inserts of nickel-aluminide alloys in nozzles may reduce the thermal gradients from 3 to 4 times if compared to nowadays design. © 2012 Elsevier Inc

    Some New Addition Formulae for Weierstrass Elliptic Functions

    We present new addition formulae for the Weierstrass functions associated with a general elliptic curve. We prove the structure of the formulae in n-variables and give the explicit addition formulae for the 2- and 3-variable cases. These new results were inspired by new addition formulae found in the case of an equianharmonic curve, which we can now observe as a specialisation of the results here. The new formulae, and the techniques used to find them, also follow the recent work for the generalisation of Weierstrass' functions to curves of higher genus.Comment: 20 page
