Towards low-latency real-time detection of gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences in the era of advanced detectors
Electromagnetic (EM) follow-up observations of gravitational wave (GW) events
will help shed light on the nature of the sources, and more can be learned if
the EM follow-ups can start as soon as the GW event becomes observable. In this
paper, we propose a computationally efficient time-domain algorithm capable of
detecting gravitational waves (GWs) from coalescing binaries of compact objects
with nearly zero time delay. In case when the signal is strong enough, our
algorithm also has the flexibility to trigger EM observation before the merger.
The key to the efficiency of our algorithm arises from the use of chains of
so-called Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters, which filter time-series
data recursively. Computational cost is further reduced by a template
interpolation technique that requires filtering to be done only for a much
coarser template bank than otherwise required to sufficiently recover optimal
signal-to-noise ratio. Towards future detectors with sensitivity extending to
lower frequencies, our algorithm's computational cost is shown to increase
rather insignificantly compared to the conventional time-domain correlation
method. Moreover, at latencies of less than hundreds to thousands of seconds,
this method is expected to be computationally more efficient than the

A Study to Validate a Self-Reported Version of the ONS Drug Dependence Questionnaire
Aim: A prospective study to establish the reliability of a self-completion version of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) questionnaire for assessing drug dependence of substance misuse clients. Method: A total of 47 treatment seeking opioid-dependent clients completed the self-complete version of the ONS questionnaire (ONS-sc) followed by the interviewer-administered ONS questionnaire (ONS-ia) at a single clinic appointment. Scores for four Class A drugs (heroin, methadone, speed and crack/cocaine) from both formats were compared. Results: The observed agreement was 87% or more and Cohen's kappa was 0.7 (p < 0.001) or more for all four Class A drugs. Sensitivity for each Class A drugs was 56% or higher and specificity was 87% or higher. Sensitivity for severe heroin dependency was 98% (CI 89–100%). There was a 100% correlation between the ONS-sc and positive urine analysis for heroin use. However, methadone and crack/cocaine drug use appeared under reported. Conclusion: ONS-sc is a feasible, practical and time-saving alternative to a detailed interview on drug dependence. Further research with a larger sample size and non-opiate-dependent clients are needed, as this could prove a useful tool for monitoring clients in everyday practice, or for survey purposes where interviews are impractical
Water sensitive urban design in the city of the future
With timeframes for addressing the issues of the City of the Future (CotF) rapidly approaching (e.g. 2020, 2025, 2050), this paper integrates international research knowledge and expertise from four continents. It critically evaluates the role of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) in the CotF in terms of overlapping theory and practice. The aspirations of water sensitive cities are reviewed and multiple drivers for applying WSUD are described from developing and developed country perspectives In addition, the potential for WSUD to support cities in ‘leap-frogging’ towards their visions are explored. The role of WSUD within the wider context of achieving sustainable living objectives (e.g. greater resilience, low carbon living, sustainable transportation, local food supply and social stability) is debated and the concept of the ‘multi-objective city’ introduced. Conclusions are drawn regarding opportunities for the WSUD process to provide a framework within which professionals from many disciplines can support landscape architects and urban planners in achieving multiobjective liveable cities are identified
Respiratory virus infection up-regulates TRPV1, TRPA1 and ASICS3 receptors on airway cells.
Receptors implicated in cough hypersensitivity are transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), transient receptor potential cation channel, Subfamily A, Member 1 (TRPA1) and acid sensing ion channel receptor 3 (ASIC3). Respiratory viruses, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and measles virus (MV) may interact directly and/or indirectly with these receptors on sensory nerves and epithelial cells in the airways. We used in vitro models of sensory neurones (SHSY5Y or differentiated IMR-32 cells) and human bronchial epithelium (BEAS-2B cells) as well as primary human bronchial epithelial cells (PBEC) to study the effect of MV and RSV infection on receptor expression. Receptor mRNA and protein levels were examined by qPCR and flow cytometry, respectively, following infection or treatment with UV inactivated virus, virus-induced soluble factors or pelleted virus. Concentrations of a range of cytokines in resultant BEAS-2B and PBEC supernatants were determined by ELISA. Up-regulation of TRPV1, TRPA1 and ASICS3 expression occurred by 12 hours post-infection in each cell type. This was independent of replicating virus, within the same cell, as virus-induced soluble factors alone were sufficient to increase channel expression. IL-8 and IL-6 increased in infected cell supernatants. Antibodies against these factors inhibited TRP receptor up-regulation. Capsazepine treatment inhibited virus induced up-regulation of TRPV1 indicating that these receptors are targets for treating virus-induced cough
Wind generated rogue waves in an annular wave flume
We investigate experimentally the statistical properties of a wind-generated wave field and the spontaneous formation of rogue waves in an annular flume. Unlike many experiments on rogue waves, where waves are mechanically generated, here the wave field is forced naturally by wind as it is in the ocean. What is unique about the present experiment is that the annular geometry of the tank makes waves propagating circularly in an {\it unlimited-fetch} condition. Within this peculiar framework, we discuss the temporal evolution of the statistical properties of the surface elevation. We show that rogue waves and heavy-tail statistics may develop naturally during the growth of the waves just before the wave height reaches a stationary condition. Our results shed new light on the formation of rogue waves in a natural environment
Social Value of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas in England and Wales.
The U.K. government is committed to establishing a coherent network of marine protected
areas by 2012 and the recentMarine and Coastal Access Act, 2009 will designate
marine conservation zones and provide wider access rights to the coast. To fulfill these
goals, this article argues the need for a clearer, shared understanding of the social
value of protected areas in creating new designations and managing existing ones. Although
marine and coastal environments attract many people and are vitally important
in terms of realized and potential social value, the majority of the public in the United
Kingdom lacks understanding and awareness regarding them. Combined with this, the
social value of marine and coastal protected areas (MCPAs) have been largely ignored
relative to conservation and economics, with the latter invariably taking precedence
in environmental policymaking. Social value reflects the complex, individual responses
that people experience in a given place. Many reasons determine why one area is valued
above another, and this research investigates the social value of MCPAs from a
practitioner’s perspective through a series of interviews. Understanding why we “socially”
value MCPAs will ultimately equip managers with an informed understanding
of these spaces, influence management decisions, and, potentially, policymaking. This
article defines social value in the context of MCPAs in England and Wales from a
practitioner perspective, explores key concepts, and suggests possible improvements in
decision-making
Framing Biotechnology: A Comparison of U.S. and British National Newspapers
Despite the potential promise of agricultural biotechnology, consumers’ trust and acceptance varies in some parts of the world. To develop a deeper understanding of the differences in news media coverage of agricultural biotechnology in U.S. and British newspapers, a framing analysis study was conducted, focusing on the news coverage of three major national “newspapers of record” during the calendar year 2002: The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. No single frame was dominant in U.S. or British national newspaper coverage of agricultural biotechnology in 2002. Some of the prominent frames were contamination of the food supply, human risk, environmental risk, scientific progress, and world hunger. There were more different frames used in The Guardian (concepts as consumer choice, dependency, and politics) than in the U.S. newspapers. Reduced Fas ligand-expressing splenic CD5+ B lymphocytes in severe collagen-induced arthritis
Abstract
Introduction
The objective was to study immune regulation in a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis that exhibits considerable heterogeneity of disease activity.
Methods
T-cell receptor transgenic mice, in which nearly all CD4+ T cells recognize a single peptide of type II collagen, were immunized with collagen and observed for development of arthritis for 4 weeks. At 28 days post-immunization, splenocytes were analyzed by flow cytometry and in vitro assays for markers of immune activation and regulation.
Results
Disease severities ranging from 0 to 12 (on a 12-point scale) were observed. Among splenic lymphocyte populations, only the CD5+ B-cell subset displayed a decrease in relative numbers as arthritis severity increased. Splenic CD5+ B cells expressed higher levels of Fas ligand (FasL) than did CD4+ T cells or CD5- B cells in all mice, and antigen-dependent T-cell death correlated with higher levels of CD5+ B cells in cocultures. Ratios of interleukin (IL)-17 to interferon-gamma production were higher in antigen-driven cultures of splenocytes from severely arthritic mice compared to mildly or nonarthritic mice. A correlation was established between the reduced production of IL-17 in antigen-driven T-cell/B-cell cocultures and FasL, but not IL-10. Confirmation of the direct killing effect of B cells on T cells was demonstrated using an antigen-specific T hybridoma cell line.
Conclusions
Reduced numbers of splenic FasL+ CD5+ B cells correlated with increasing arthritis severity and decreased T-cell death in a T-cell receptor transgenic mouse model of collagen-induced arthritis. To sit or stand? A preliminary, cross sectional study to investigate if there is a difference in glenohumeral subluxation in sitting or standing in people following stroke
Background: Glenohumeral subluxation (GHS) is a common symptom following stroke. Many therapists postulate that GHS may be reduced if the base of support (BOS) is reduced and the centre of mass (COM) is raised as this requires greater postural muscle activity. However, there is little empirical evidence to support this practice.
Objective: The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate if the amount of GHS alters from sitting to standing.
Study design: A cross sectional, within-subject design in a convenience sample of 15 stroke patients with GHS was utilised.
Methods: A prospective design was used with a single blinded tester who assessed GHS using the calliper method in sitting, standing and on return to sitting. Friedman and post hoc Wilcoxon tests showed that GHS was significantly reduced in standing compared to sitting (p <0.05) but this reduction was not maintained on return to sitting (p = 0.25).
Conclusions: The results of this study are limited by its small size. However, these results indicate that reducing BOS during rehabilitation may improve GHS after stroke. Whilst the maintenance of benefit is not established, these findings suggest that reducing BOS as part of treatment may help patients with GHS. Further research is now required to replicate these results in a larger sample and to directly examine shoulder muscle activity to investigate which muscles may influence GHS in response to changing BOS. Future work could also aim to determine whether the reduction in GHS was directly attributable to a reduced BOS or the effort associated with moving from sitting to standing
