The hydrodynamics of swimming microorganisms
Cell motility in viscous fluids is ubiquitous and affects many biological
processes, including reproduction, infection, and the marine life ecosystem.
Here we review the biophysical and mechanical principles of locomotion at the
small scales relevant to cell swimming (tens of microns and below). The focus
is on the fundamental flow physics phenomena occurring in this inertia-less
realm, and the emphasis is on the simple physical picture. We review the basic
properties of flows at low Reynolds number, paying special attention to aspects
most relevant for swimming, such as resistance matrices for solid bodies, flow
singularities, and kinematic requirements for net translation. Then we review
classical theoretical work on cell motility: early calculations of the speed of
a swimmer with prescribed stroke, and the application of resistive-force theory
and slender-body theory to flagellar locomotion. After reviewing the physical
means by which flagella are actuated, we outline areas of active research,
including hydrodynamic interactions, biological locomotion in complex fluids,
the design of small-scale artificial swimmers, and the optimization of
locomotion strategies.Comment: Review articl
A comparison between Pa alpha and H alpha emission: The relation between HII region mean reddening, local gas density and metallicity
We measure reddenings to HII regions in NGC 2903, NGC 1512, M51, NGC 4449 and
NGC 6946 from Hubble Space Telescope Pa alpha and H alpha images. Extinctions
range from A_V ~ 5 - 0 depending upon the galaxy. For the galaxies with HST
images in both lines, NGC 2903, NGC 1512 and M51, the Pa alpha and H alpha
emission are almost identical in morphology which implies that little emission
from bright HII regions is hidden from view by regions of comparatively high
extinction. The scatter in the measured extinctions is only +- 0.5 mag.
We compare the reddenings we measure in five galaxies using the Pa alpha to H
alpha ratios to those measured previously from the Balmer decrement in the LMC
and as a function of radius in M101 and M51. We find that luminosity weighted
mean extinctions of these ensembles of HI regions are correlated with gas
surface density and metallicity. The correlation is consistent with the mean
extinction depending on dust density where the dust to gas mass ratio scales
with the metallicity. This trend is expected if HII regions tend to be located
near the mid-plane of a gas disk and emerge from their parent molecular clouds
soon after birth. In environments with gas densities below a few hundred
Msol/pc^2 star formation rates estimated from integrated line fluxes and mean
extinctions are likely to be fairly accurate.Comment: accepted for publication in A
On the Uniform Random Generation of Non Deterministic Automata Up to Isomorphism
In this paper we address the problem of the uniform random generation of non
deterministic automata (NFA) up to isomorphism. First, we show how to use a
Monte-Carlo approach to uniformly sample a NFA. Secondly, we show how to use
the Metropolis-Hastings Algorithm to uniformly generate NFAs up to isomorphism.
Using labeling techniques, we show that in practice it is possible to move into
the modified Markov Chain efficiently, allowing the random generation of NFAs
up to isomorphism with dozens of states. This general approach is also applied
to several interesting subclasses of NFAs (up to isomorphism), such as NFAs
having a unique initial states and a bounded output degree. Finally, we prove
that for these interesting subclasses of NFAs, moving into the Metropolis
Markov chain can be done in polynomial time. Promising experimental results

ROSAT X-ray sources in the field of the LMC I.Total LMC gas from the background AGN spectral fits
We analyzed a sample of 26 background X-ray sources in a ~60 square degree
field of the Large Magellanic Cloud observed with the ROSAT PSPC. The sample
has been selected from previously classified and optically identified X-ray
sources. In addition pointlike and spectrally hard sources with at least 100 to
200 observed counts have been used for the analysis. We performed X-ray
spectral fitting and derived total hydrogen absorbing column densities due to
LMC gas in the range 10^20 - 2. 10^21 cm^-2. We compared these columns with the
HI columns derived from a 21-cm Parkes survey of the LMC. For 7 optically
identified sources we find, within the uncertainties derived from the X-ray
spectral fit, agreement for both columns. For further 19 sources we constrain
the LMC columns from the X-ray spectral fit assuming that the powerlaw photon
index is that of AGN type spectra. We derive for 20 sources gas columns which
are within the uncertainties in agreement with the HI columns. We derive for
two background sources (RX J0536.9-6913 and RX J0547.0-7040) hydrogen absorbing
column densities due to LMC gas, which are in excess to the HI columns. These
sources - located in regions of large (~3. 10^21 cm^-2) LMC HI column densities
- could be seen through additional gas which may be warm and diffuse, cold or
molecular. For 10 sources we derive upper limits for the gas columns additional
to HI and constrain the molecular mass fraction to <(30-140)%.Comment: Accepted by A&
Effects on the maternofetal unit of the rabbit model after substitution of the amniotic fluid with perfluorocarbons
Objectives: Exchanging amniotic fluid (AF) with perfluorocarbon (PFC) may serve as a medium for fetoscopic surgery. This study evaluates the distribution and physiologic effects of intraamniotic PFC as a medium for fetoscopy. Methods: Fetuses of 17 pregnant rabbits underwent either exchange of the AF with PFC, electrolyte solution (ES), or control. The quality of vision during fetoscopy was assessed in AF and PFC. After 6 h, we determined the distribution of PFC in the maternofetal unit. Results: Quality of vision during fetoscopy was better in PFC than with AF. There was no difference in fetal survival between the study groups. PFC was demonstrated on X-ray in the pharynx of 4 fetuses, and the esophagus in 1. Single copy shRNA configuration for ubiquitous gene knockdown in mice
RNA interference through the expression of small hairpin RNA (shRNA) molecules has become a very promising tool in reverse mouse genetics as it may allow inexpensive and rapid gene function analysis in vivo. However, the prerequisites for ubiquitous and reproducible shRNA expression are not well defined. Here we show that a single copy shRNA-transgene can mediate body-wide gene silencing in mice when inserted in a defined locus of the genome. The most commonly used promoters for shRNA expression, H1 and U6, showed a comparably broad activity in this configuration. Taken together, the results define a novel approach for efficient interference with expression of defined genes in vivo. Moreover, we provide a rapid strategy for the production of gene knockdown mice combining recombinase mediated cassette exchange and tetraploid blastocyst complementation approaches
Milky Way potentials in CDM and MOND. Is the Large Magellanic Cloud on a bound orbit?
We compute the Milky Way potential in different cold dark matter (CDM) based
models, and compare these with the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND)
framework. We calculate the axis ratio of the potential in various models, and
find that isopotentials are less spherical in MOND than in CDM potentials. As
an application of these models, we predict the escape velocity as a function of
the position in the Galaxy. This could be useful in comparing with future data
from planned or already-underway kinematic surveys (RAVE, SDSS, SEGUE, SIM,
GAIA or the hypervelocity stars survey). In addition, the predicted escape
velocity is compared with the recently measured high proper motion velocity of
the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). To bind the LMC to the Galaxy in a MOND
model, while still being compatible with the RAVE-measured local escape speed
at the Sun's position, we show that an external field modulus of less than

(Correcting) misdiagnoses of asthma: A cost effectiveness analysis

Objective: to determine whether a secondary-screening-program to establish a correct diagnosis of asthma in those who report a physician diagnosis of asthma is cost effective.Method: Randomly selected physician-diagnosed-asthmatic subjects from 8 Canadian cities were studied with an extensive diagnostic algorithm to rule-in, or rule-out, a correct diagnosis of asthma. Subjects in whom the diagnosis of asthma was excluded were followed up for 6-months and data on asthma medications and heath care utilization was obtained. Economic analysis was performed to estimate the incremental lifetime costs associated with secondary screening of previously diagnosed asthmatic subjects. Analysis was from the perspective of the Canadian healthcare system and is reported in Canadian dollars.Results: Of 540 randomly selected patients with physician diagnosed asthma 150 (28%; 95%CI 19-37%) did not have asthma when objectively studied. 71% of these misdiagnosed patients were on some asthma medications. Incorporating the incremental cost of secondary-screening for the diagnosis of asthma, we found that the average cost savings per 100 individuals screened was 4,588-$69,278).Conclusion: Cost savings primarily resulted from lifetime costs of medication use averted in those who had been misdiagnosed.This work was funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research, Canada and the University Of Ottawa Division Of Respiratory Medicine
Quantum levitation by left-handed metamaterials
Left-handed metamaterials make perfect lenses that image classical
electromagnetic fields with significantly higher resolution than the
diffraction limit. Here we consider the quantum physics of such devices. We
show that the Casimir force of two conducting plates may turn from attraction
to repulsion if a perfect lens is sandwiched between them. For optical
left-handed metamaterials this repulsive force of the quantum vacuum may
levitate ultra-thin mirrors
Generation of single-mode SU(1,1) intelligent states and an analytic approach to their quantum statistical properties
We discuss a scheme for generation of single-mode photon states associated
with the two-photon realization of the SU(1,1) algebra. This scheme is based on
the process of non-degenerate down-conversion with the signal prepared
initially in the squeezed vacuum state and with a measurement of the photon
number in one of the output modes. We focus on the generation and properties of
single-mode SU(1,1) intelligent states which minimize the uncertainty relations
for Hermitian generators of the group. Properties of the intelligent states are
studied by using a ``weak'' extension of the analytic representation in the
unit disk. Then we are able to obtain exact analytical expressions for
expectation values describing quantum statistical properties of the SU(1,1)
intelligent states. Attention is mainly devoted to the study of photon
