    Geodemographics: creating a classification at the level of the individual

    This research challenges the existing geodemographics ethos by investigating the benefit to be gained from a move away from conventional areal unit categorisation to systems capable of classifying at the individual level. This research will present a unique framework through which classifications can be developed at this level of resolution. Inherently methodological, a local classification for Leeds (UK) will be presented plus further examples of this applied framework. Issues such as ecological fallacy, Modifiable Areal Unit Problem and generalisation are aspects to be considered when interpreting spatially aggregated data. A move away from such problems is one of the central objectives of this research. Data variables from the UK’s 2001 Small Area Microdata file underpin this research. These variables undergo transformation from categorical states into scale variables based on gross monthly income data present in the British Household Panel Survey therefore enabling effective clustering. Micro-simulation is then employed to create an individual-level population. The framework presented comprises entirely census variables but also demonstrates a linkage capability to other non-census datasets, such as the British Household Panel Survey (now Understanding Society), for deeper profiling, classification validation and enrichment

    The Capstone Journey: Exploring Design, Delivery and Evaluation in an Undergraduate Management Discipline Context

    The focus of this paper is the development of a capstone management course and the application of educational action research through continual learning. In this article, we use the continual learning frame of plan, do, study, and act to underpin an educational action research design on the development of a capstone management course. As part of an Active Learning Trial, the development of the capstone experience has been captured in the embodiment of that experience. Our aim is to guide other academics in developing their own capstone course, particularly, within management with extension into other disciplines. Through continual improvement, we stress the importance of integrating the primary voice of the students, to emphasize the active learning and to optimize a meaningful experience in connecting theory to practice – the key to the capstone experience. Examples of how to gain feedback and integrate classroom improvements are given. To do this we present two cycles where we applied and practiced continual learning and educational action research to understand and evoke improvements within the course. These changes are evidenced through aggregated student feedback

    “They just scraped off the calluses”: a mixed methods exploration of foot care access and provision for people with rheumatoid arthritis in south-western Sydney, Australia

    Background: There is little indication that foot health services in Australia are meeting modern day recommendations for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients. The overall objective of this study was to explore the current state of foot health services for patients with RA with an emphasis on identifying barriers to the receipt of appropriate foot care in South-West Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.Methods: A mixed (quantitative and qualitative) approach was adopted. Indications for appropriate access to foot care were determined by comparing the foot health, disease and socio-demographic characteristics of patients with unmet foot care demands, foot care users and patients with no demands for foot care. Perceptions of provision of, and access to, foot care were explored by conducting telephone-based interviews using an interpretative phenomenology approach with thematic analysis.Results: Twenty-nine participants took part in the cross-sectional quantitative research study design, and 12 participants took part in the interpretative phenomenological approach (qualitative study). Foot care access appeared to be driven predominantly by the presence of rearfoot deformity, which was significantly worse amongst participants in the foot care user group (p = 0.02). Five main themes emerged from the qualitative data: 1) impact of disease-related foot symptoms, 2) footwear difficulties, 3) medical/rheumatology encounters, 4) foot and podiatry care access and experiences, and 5) financial hardship.Conclusions: Foot care provision does not appear to be driven by appropriate foot health characteristics such as foot pain or foot-related disability. There may be significant shortfalls in footwear and foot care access and provision in Greater Western Sydney. Several barriers to adequate foot care access and provision were identified and further efforts are required to improve access to and the quality of foot care for people who have RA. Integration of podiatry services within rheumatology centres could resolve unmet needs of people with RA by permitting rapid access to expert-led multidisciplinary foot care for people with RA

    Comparison of Target-Capture and Restriction-Site Associated DNA Sequencing for Phylogenomics: A Test in Cardinalid Tanagers (Aves, Genus: Piranga)

These two methods were designed to target different evolutionary timescales: RAD-seq was designed for population-genomic level questions and UCEs for deeper phylogenetics. The utility of both data sets to infer phylogenies across a variety of taxonomic levels has not been adequately compared within the same taxonomic system. Additionally, the effects of uninformative gene trees on species tree analyses (for target capture data) have not been explored. Here, we utilize RAD-seq and UCE data to infer a phylogeny of the bird genus Piranga. The group has a range of divergence dates (0.5–6 myr), contains 11 recognized species, and lacks a resolved phylogeny. We compared two species tree methods for the RAD-seq data and six species tree methods for the UCE data. Additionally, in the UCE data, we analyzed a complete matrix as well as data sets with only highly informative loci. A complete matrix of 189 UCE loci with 10 or more parsimony informative (PI) sites, and an approximately 80% complete matrix of 1128 PI single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (from RAD-seq) yield the same fully resolved phylogeny of Piranga. We inferred non-monophyletic relationships of Pirangalutea individuals, with all other a priori species identified as monophyletic. Finally, we found that species tree analyses that included predominantly uninformative gene trees provided strong support for different topologies, with consistent phylogenetic results when limiting species tree analyses to highly informative loci or only using less informative loci with concatenation or methods meant for SNPs alone

    Investigation into the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for people living with HIV

    BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) report high levels of anxiety. This study assessed the prevalence of COVID-19-related anxiety in PLWH. METHODS: Participants were recruited from two UK HIV clinics (01/03/2020 - 30/05/2022) and asked to complete the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale. The proportion with scores ≥9 (cut-off for dysfunctional pandemic-related anxiety) and ≥1 (reporting of any pandemic-related anxiety) were analysed. RESULTS: 115 PLWH were included, predominantly identifying as male (83.5%, n = 96), white (58.3%, n = 67) and reporting post-secondary education (82.6%, n = 95), with a median age of 51 years (range 22-93). Median CAS score was 0, with 4.4% scoring ≥9 (n = 5). More women scored ≥9 than men (16.7% (n = 3) and 2.1% (n = 2) respectively). Black African (13.6%, n = 3) and Other Ethnic Minority PLWH (25%, n = 2) had a greater proportion of scores ≥9 than White/Asian PLWH (both 0%). SARS-CoV-2 exposure was associated with scores greater than 1 but not greater than 9. CAS score was not associated with lower CD4 (<350 cells/mm3), detectable HIV viral load (≥50 copies/ml), or a history of pre-pandemic anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: Pandemic-related anxiety was low, but we identified a sub-population reporting dysfunctional pandemic related anxiety. Future work should further investigate the psychological impact of the pandemic on this group

    Bud13 Promotes a Type I Interferon Response By Countering Intron Retention in Irf7

    Intron retention (IR) has emerged as an important mechanism of gene expression control, but the factors controlling IR events remain poorly understood. We observed consistent IR in one intron of the Irf7 gene and identified BUD13 as an RNA-binding protein that acts at this intron to increase the amount of successful splicing. Deficiency in BUD13 was associated with increased IR, decreased mature Irf7 transcript and protein levels, and consequently a dampened type I interferon response, which compromised the ability of BUD13-deficient macrophages to withstand vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection. Global analysis of BUD13 knockdown and BUD13 cross-linking to RNA revealed a subset of introns that share many characteristics with the one found in Irf7 and are spliced in a BUD13-dependent manner. Deficiency of BUD13 led to decreased mature transcript from genes containing such introns. Thus, by acting as an antagonist to IR, BUD13 facilitates the expression of genes at which IR occurs
