    Applications of Commutator-Type Operators to pp-Groups

    For a p-group G admitting an automorphism ϕ\phi of order pnp^n with exactly pmp^m fixed points such that ϕpn−1\phi^{p^{n-1}} has exactly pkp^k fixed points, we prove that G has a fully-invariant subgroup of m-bounded nilpotency class with (p,n,m,k)(p,n,m,k)-bounded index in G. We also establish its analogue for Lie p-rings. The proofs make use of the theory of commutator-type operators.Comment: 11 page

With his decades of activities he actively contributed to the creation and development of the Hungarian capitalism and the to the domestic capitalist economy. It can be recognized that in Wekerle’s social-political thinking there is a relationship between the economic public interest, the employees’ economic and health interest, the employers’ interest and the interest of the public education. In the area of public education he regarded the enforcement of national factors as a cornerstone so that at all stages of the education the national character of the Hungarian state should be expressed. The entire public education should be harmonized with practical life and the national standards in a way that the freedom and rationale of spiritual and local education as well as the national minority education would not be damaged

    Monitoring Low Density Avian Populations: An Example using Mountain Plovers

    Declines in avian populations highlight a need for rigorous, broad-scale monitoring pro-grams to document trends in avian populations that occur in low densities across expansive landscapes. Accounting for the spatial variation and variation in detection probability inherent to monitoring programs is thought to be effort-intensive and time-consuming. We determined the feasibility of the analytical method developed by Royle and Nichols (2003), which uses presence-absence (detection-non-detection) field data, to estimate abundance of Mountain Plovers (Charadrius montanus) per sampling unit in agricultural fields, grassland, and prairie dog habitat in eastern Colorado. Field methods were easy to implement and results suggest that the analytical method provides valuable insight into population patterning among habitats. Mountain Plover abundance was highest in prairie dog habitat, slightly lower in agricultural fields, and substantially lower in grassland. These results provided valuable insight to focus future research into Mountain Plover ecology and conservation

    Creation of a Virtual Interface for Stress-Trauma Investigations through Open World Navigation: An Exploration of Tolerability and Physiological Reactions

    It is estimated that as many as 50% of people suffering from Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) may experience chronic alterations of their activities of daily living as much as 1-year post injury. Despite their burden, there is little to evidence to suggest why some people may be more likely to acquire WAD or develop chronic symptomology. Additionally, the link between biomechanical forces at the time of impact and symptom development or recovery is poor. As a result, interest in alternative theories such as stress system reactivity have received interest in recent literature, but empirical methods to test them has been lacking. Thus, the purpose of this thesis was to explore the relationship between stress and trauma using a known stressor and a newly developed virtual reality (VR)-based car crash simulator to better understand the immediate reaction to being involved in a motor vehicle crash (MVC). In Chapter 2, we evaluated conditioned pain modulation (CPM) in reaction to the cold pressor task and measured associations with indices of sympathetic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function. It was found that only 30% of participants experienced inhibitory CPM. Within this group, there was a positive moderate correlation between CPM and the absolute change in skin conductance pre-to-post cold pressor task. In Chapter 3, we explored the initial tolerability to a novel VR-based car crash simulator in healthy subjects and also evaluated sense of presence and simulator sickness. The system was well tolerated by a majority of participants, and it appeared that the sense of presence and simulator sickness shared an inverse relationship. In Chapter 4, we evaluated the pain and stress response to our VR-based car crash simulator in the form of pain pressure detection thresholds, CPM, heart rate variability, and salivary cortisol. Over 40% of participants were more sensitive to pain following the simulation, and this may have been associated with an increase in parasympathetic nervous system activity and salivary cortisol. These results may help to explain some of the heterogeneity of WAD presentations after a MVC and signify that the pain/stress response to simulated trauma is variable

    We present some new results about the distribution of a random walk whose independent steps follow a q−q-Gaussian distribution with exponent 11−q;q∈R\frac{1}{1-q}; q \in \mathbb{R}. In the case q>1q>1 we show that a stochastic representation of the point reached after nn steps of the walk can be expressed explicitly for all nn. In the case q<1,q<1, we show that the random walk can be interpreted as a projection of an isotropic random walk, i.e. a random walk with fixed length steps and uniformly distributed directions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Family of solvable generalized random-matrix ensembles with unitary symmetry

    We construct a very general family of characteristic functions describing Random Matrix Ensembles (RME) having a global unitary invariance, and containing an arbitrary, one-variable probability measure which we characterize by a `spread function'. Various choices of the spread function lead to a variety of possible generalized RMEs, which show deviations from the well-known Gaussian RME originally proposed by Wigner. We obtain the correlation functions of such generalized ensembles exactly, and show examples of how particular choices of the spread function can describe ensembles with arbitrary eigenvalue densities as well as critical ensembles with multifractality.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in Phys.     Sex ratios of Mountain Plovers from egg production to fledging

    Skewed sex ratios can have negative implications for population growth if they do not match a species’ life history. A skewed tertiary sex ratio has been detected in a population of Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus), a grassland shorebird experiencing population declines. To study the cause of the observed male skew, we examined three early life stages between egg and fledgling in eastern Colorado from 2010 to 2012. This allows us to distinguish between egg production and chick survival as an explanation for the observed skew. We examined the primary sex ratio in eggs produced and the secondary sex ratio in hatched chicks to see if the sex ratio bias occurs before hatching. We also determined the sex ratio at fledging to reveal sex-specific mortality of nestlings. The primary sex ratio was 1.01 (± 0.01) males per female. The secondary sex ratio consisted of 1.10 (± 0.02) males per female. The probability of a chick surviving to fledging differed between males (0.55 ± 0.13) and females (0.47 ± 0.15), but the precision of these survival estimates was low. Sex ratios in early life stages of the Mountain Plover do not explain the skewed sex ratio observed in adults in this breeding population
