The Devil is in the Details. Sex Differences in Simple Bargaining Games
The study of gender differences in social preferences has shown mixed results, preventing economists and other social scientists from drawing definitive conclusions on this topic. Several original investigations and experimental reviews have hypothesized that the main reason of this heterogeneity of results is the myriad of experimental designs used to study
gender differences. In this paper we test this hypothesis by making male and female participants to face two different but related experimental games and two different information treatments. Through this 2x2 factorial design, we obtain results in line with some recent papers: women are sensitive to the design and context of the experiment in ways that men
are not. In addition, we go further providing a well-grounded account on
the importance of the context for female decision-making
Internal and relative motions of the Taurus and Ophiuchus star-forming regions
We investigate the internal and relative motions of the Taurus and Ophiuchus
star-forming regions using a sample of young stars with accurately measured
radial velocities and proper motions. We find no evidence for expansion or
contraction of the Taurus complex, but a clear indication for a global
rotation, resulting in velocity gradients, this suggests a common origin,
possibly related to that of Gould's Belt.Comment: 2 figure
Treatment of sunitinib-induced hypertension in solid tumor by nitric oxide donors
[Abstract] Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor (VEGFR) are overexpressed in the majority of renal cell carcinomas. This characteristic has supported the rationale of targeting VEGF-driven tumour vascularization, especially in clear cell RCC. VEGF-inhibiting strategies include the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (sunitinib, axitinib, pazopanib, and sorafenib) and neutralizing antibodies such as bevacizumab.
Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most common adverse effects of angiogenesis inhibitors. HTN observed in clinical trials appears to correlate with the potency of VEGF kinase inhibitor against VEGFR-2: agents with higher potency are associated with a higher incidence of HTN. Although the exact mechanism by tyrosine kinase inhibitors induce HTN has not yet been completely clarified, two key hypotheses have been postulated. First, some studies have pointed to a VEGF inhibitors-induced decrease in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and nitric oxide (NO) production, that can result in vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure. VEGF, mediated by PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathway, upregulates the endothelial nitric oxide synthase enzyme leading to up-regulation of NO production. So inhibition of signaling through the VEGF pathway would lead to a decrease in NO production, resulting in an increase in vascular resistance and blood pressure. Secondly a decrease in the number of microvascular endothelial cells and subsequent depletion of normal microvessel density (rarefaction) occurs upon VEGF signaling inhibition.
NO donors could be successfully used not only for the treatment of developed angiogenesis-inhibitor-induced hypertension but also for preventive effects
Determinación del potencial promotor del crecimiento vegetal de Azotobacter spp. aislados de la rizósfera de malezas en cultivos de maíz (Zea mays L.)
The chemical fertilizer represents for 20 and 30 % of cost the production a crop, used correctly increase productivity and profitability, however, each year increase the among of fertilizer to apply, due to deficiency of soil adsorption and absorption by the plant. Beging maize the third most important crop in Peru, with a significant impact on economic and social activity in 2014, only 40% of the offered maize corresponded of the production nacional. 37 weeds were identified associated with crops of maize from agricultural fields Monsefú districts and Reque, Lambayeque Region, with 68% being dicotyledonous against monocots with 32%. Bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of weeds, getting 305 pure cultures of bacteria, 133 of which (43.7%) were identified as Azotobacter spp. Investigated the biochemical reaction in nitrate reduction, utilization of sucrose, glucose, maltose, mannitol, rhamnose, glycerol and sorbitol. Identifying A. vinelandii (58%), A. paspali (13%), A. armeniacus (8%), A. nigricans (8%) and 13 cultives not the species was identified. With this cultives pure of Azotobacter spp. native was quantified to 36.03 ppm of fixed nitrogen as ammonia; 60.75 ppm of indole acetic acid and 6.06 ppm solubilized phosphorus was also determined the activity antagonistic to Fusarium verticillioides, proteolytic and chitinolytic. 20% of Azotobacter spp. native did not affect the emergence of simple hybrid hard yellow corn 144 agriculture, 33% positively affected and 47% negatively affected. In turn, none Azotobacter spp. affect negatively survival. The potential of the plant growth promoter of Azotobacter spp. isolated from weeds in maize crops in the region of Lambayeque been demonstrated.
A ground-truth experiment on melody genre recognition in absence of timbre
Music genre or style is an important metadata for music collections and database organization. Some authors claim for the need of having ground truth studies on this particular topic, in order to compare results with them and lead to sound conclusions when analyzing software performances. When dealing with digital scores in any format, timbrical information is not always available or trustworthy so we have avoided this information in our computer models, using only melodic information. The main goal of this work is to assess the human ability for recognizing music genres in absence of timbre in order to assess comparatively the performance of computer models for this task. For this, we have experimented with fragments of melodies in absence of accompaniment and timbre, as our computer models do. For this particular paper we have worked with two well-stablished genres in the music literature, like classical and jazz music. A number of analyses in terms of age, group, education, and music studies of the people subjected to the tests have been performed. The results show that, on average, the error rate was about 18%. This value shows the base line to be improved for computer systems in this task without using timbrical information. This work is supported by the Spanish PROSEMUS project (TIN2006-14932-C02), the research programme Consolider Ingenio 2010 (MIPRCV, CSD2007-00018) and the Pascal Network of Excellence
Determining concentration depth profiles in fluorinated networks by means of electric force microscopy
5 páginas, 6 figuras.-- et al.By means of electric force microscopy, composition depth profiles were measured with nanometric resolution for a series of fluorinated networks. By mapping the dielectric permittivity along a line going from the surface to the bulk, we were able to experimentally access to the fluorine concentration profile. Obtained data show composition gradient lengths ranging from 30 nm to 80 nm in the near surface area for samples containing from 0.5 to 5 wt. % F, respectively. In contrast, no gradients of concentration were detected in bulk. This method has several advantages over other techniques because it allows profiling directly on a sectional cut of the sample. By combining the obtained results with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, we were also able to quantify F/C ratio as a function of depth with nanoscale resolution.L.A.M., M.M.K., G.A.S., A.A., and J.C. acknowledge
