    The Influence of Infection and Colonization on Outcomes in Inpatients With COVID-19 : Are We Forgetting Something?

    The COVID-19 epidemic has been a great challenge to health systems and especially hospitals. A prospective observational epidemiological study was planned as of February 26, 2020 in a tertiary hospital in the Valencia region. The total number of patients followed up with complete information during the first year was 2,448. Among other variables, the comorbidities of the patients were collected (and grouped in the Charson index), the stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), the co-infections, and the colonizations. Data on nosocomial infections due to said virus were also collected. The median days from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis were 4 + 4.6, while an additional 4.4 days had to pass for the patients to be admitted to the ICU. The factors associated with a higher risk of death were those with coinfection, especially with Candida auris [odds ratio (OR): 4.6], a situation that also occurred in the ICU (OR: 3.18). Charlson Index comorbidity and C. auris colonization were also very important both in general hospitalization and in the ICU

    Origin and driving mechanisms of marine litter in the shelf-incised Motril, Carchuna, and Calahonda canyons (northern Alboran Sea)

    Introduction and methodsMarine litter density, distribution and potential sources, and the impact on canyon seafloor habitats were investigated in the Motril, Carchuna and Calahonda canyons, located along the northern margin of the Alboran Sea. During the ALSSOMAR-S2S oceanographic survey carried out in 2019, canyon floor imagery was collected by a Remotely Operated Vehicle along 5 km in the Motril Canyon, 10 km in the Carchuna Canyon, and 3 km in Calahonda Canyon, together with 41 surficial sediment samples. Additionally, coastal uses, maritime traffic and fishing activity data were analyzed. A 50 m resolution multibeam bathymetry served as base map. ResultsIn the Motril and Calahonda canyons, the density of marine litter was low and the material was dispersed, very degraded and partially buried. In contrast, the Carchuna Canyon contained a greater amount and variety of litter. The Carchuna Canyon thalweg exhibited a density of marine litter up to 8.66 items center dot 100 m(-1), and litter hotspots with a density of up to 42 items center dot m(2) are found along the upper reaches of the canyon thalweg. DiscussionLow litter abundances found in the studied canyons most likely reflect low population densities and the absence of direct connections with streams in the nearby coasts. The high shelf incision of the Carchuna Canyon and its proximity to the coastline favor littoral sediment remobilization and capture as well as the formation of gravity flows that transport the marine litter along the thalweg toward the distal termination of the channel. Litter hotspots are favored by the canyon morphology and the occurrence of rocky outcrops. Most debris is of coastal origin and related to beach occupation and agricultural practices in the adjacent coastal plain. A third origin was represented by fishing gear in the study area. Fishing activity may be producing an impact through physical damage to the skeletons of the colonial scleractinians located in the walls of the Carchuna Canyon.     Reading Encouragement from the School Library: Operating Protocols and Action Strategies

    Nuestro proyecto se centró en familiarizar a estudiantes de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación (UCO) con uno de los ámbitos esenciales del que será su entorno laboral, las bibliotecas de los Centros de Educación Infantil y Primaria (CEIP) cordobeses. La idea era ponerlos en contacto, e iniciarlos, en sus protocolos de funcionamiento y sus múltiples posibilidades como incentivo de animación a la lectura. Como futuros profesionales de la educación, los estudiantes deben concienciarse de la importancia que posee la lectura en la formación del alumnado, así como reconocer las herramientas y estrategias para acercársela de un modo eficaz. Antes y después de la visita, núcleo de nuestra propuesta, se realizaron actividades complementarias: previamente se introdujo en clase un módulo teórico-práctico destinado a poner en contacto a los estudiantes con los presupuestos teóricos, y ejemplos reales, de proyectos de fomento de la lectura realizados desde las bibliotecas de los CEIP y desde otras instituciones educativas. Tras la visita, realizaron un trabajo en el que reflexionaron sobre la lectura como pilar fundamental básico de la formación académica y dieron sus impresiones y valoraciones sobre los distintos proyectos presentados en el centro visitado.Our project focused on students of the School for Educational Science (UCO). The aim is to get students acquainted with one of the main areas of their future work environment, i.e. the libraries in the Children School Centers and Primary Education Centers (CEIP) in Córdoba. The main objective was to put students in contact and provide initial steps in the CEIP environment, while using these centers as a tool to encourage reading. In their ability as future education professionals, our students must understand the key importance of reading in training processes, and get to know the tools and strategies instrumental to an effective educational approach. Before and after the visits, some supplementary activities were included. Before the visit, a theoretical-practical module was included in the lessons, so that the students would get used to the theoretical assumptions involved. In addition, realistic case studies were discussed, describing reading promotion projects previously organized in CEIP libraries and other educational institutions. Following the visit, the students were invited to write a report dealing with the role of reading as a basic pillar in academic careers, and to comment on the different projects presented in the center hosting the visit

    Multiomics Molecular Research into the Recalcitrant and Orphan Quercus ilex Tree Species: Why, What for, and How

    The holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) is the dominant tree species of the Mediterranean forest and the Spanish agrosilvopastoral ecosystem, “dehesa.” It has been, since the prehistoric period, an important part of the Iberian population from a social, cultural, and religious point of view, providing an ample variety of goods and services, and forming the basis of the economy in rural areas. Currently, there is renewed interest in its use for dietary diversification and sustainable food production. It is part of cultural richness, both economically (tangible) and environmentally (intangible), and must be preserved for future generations. However, a worrisome degradation of the species and associated ecosystems is occurring, observed in an increase in tree decline and mortality, which requires urgent action. Breeding programs based on the selection of elite genotypes by molecular markers is the only plausible biotechnological approach. To this end, the authors’ group started, in 2004, a research line aimed at characterizing the molecular biology of Q. ilex. It has been a challenging task due to its biological characteristics (long life cycle, allogamous, high phenotypic variability) and recalcitrant nature. The biology of this species has been characterized following the central dogma of molecular biology using the omics cascade. Molecular responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as seed maturation and germination, are the two main objectives of our research. The contributions of the group to the knowledge of the species at the level of DNA-based markers, genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are discussed here. Moreover, data are compared with those reported for Quercus spp. All omics data generated, and the genome of Q. ilex available, will be integrated with morphological and physiological data in the systems biology direction. Thus, we will propose possible molecular markers related to resilient and productive genotypes to be used in reforestation programs. In addition, possible markers related to the nutritional value of acorn and derivate products, as well as bioactive compounds (peptides and phenolics) and allergens, will be suggested. Subsequently, the selected molecular markers will be validated by both genome-wide association and functional genomic analyses

    Peripheral and placental immune responses in sheep after experimental infection with "Toxoplasma gondii" at the three terms of gestation

    P. 1-9Although it is known that gestation could infuence the clinical course of ovine toxoplasmosis, the precise efect of the term of gestation when sheep are infected are yet mostly unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the peripheral and placental immune responses developed in pregnant sheep after experimental infection with Toxoplasma gondiiat diferent times of gestation. Thirty‑six pregnant sheep were allocated in diferent groups, orally inocu‑lated with sporulated oocysts of T. gondiiat early, mid and late gestation and culled within 30 days post‑infection. The peripheral humoral and cytokine responses were evaluated, as well as the transcription of cytokines at the placenta. Serological analysis revealed that, regardless the term of gestation when infected, specifc IgG against T. gondiiwere detected from day 8 post‑infection and there was an early peripheral release of IFN‑γ at the frst week post‑infection followed by a short peak of IL10 and TNF‑α at the second week post‑infection. There were no signifcant diferences in this response between infected groups. At the placenta, a similar increase in transcription of IFN‑γ, and TNF‑α was found at the three terms of gestation, while IL‑4 increased mainly at the frst and second terms and IL‑10 transcription was higher at the last term. While these fndings show that both Th1 and Th2 cytokines play a key role in the patho‑genesis of ovine toxoplasmosis and that placental and peripheral immune responses do not closely correlate, there seems to be no clear modulation of these responses along the gestation.S

    Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite infecting all warm-blooded animals, including humans. The contribution of environmental contamination by T. gondii oocysts to infections is understudied. The aim of the current work was to explore T. gondii serology as a means of attributing the source of infection using a robust stepwise approach. We identified in silico thirty-two promising oocyst-specific antigens from T. gondii ´omics data, recombinantly expressed and purified them and validated whether serology based on these proteins could discriminate oocyst- from tissue cyst-driven experimental infections. For this, three well-characterized serum panels, sampled from 0 to 6 weeks post-infection, from pigs and sheep experimentally infected with T. gondii oocysts or tissue cysts, were used. Candidate proteins were initially screened by Western blot with sera from pigs or sheep, infected for different times, either with oocysts or tissue cysts, as well as non-infected animals. Only the recombinant proteins TgCCp5A and TgSR1 provoked seroconversion upon infection and appeared to discriminate between oocyst- and tissue cyst-driven infections with pig sera. They were subsequently used to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test for pigs. Based on this assay and Western blot analyses, a lack of stage specificity and low antigenicity was observed with all pig sera. The same was true for proteins TgERP, TgSporoSAG, TgOWP1 and TgOWP8, previously described as source-attributing antigens, when analyzed using the whole panels of sera. We conclude that there is currently no antigen that allows the discrimination of T. gondii infections acquired from either oocysts or tissue cysts by serological tests. This work provides robust new knowledge that can inform further research and development toward source-attributing T. gondii serology.</p
