Histopathological Analogies in Chronic Pulmonary Lesions between Cattle and Humans: Basis for an Alternative Animal Model

Most of the natural cases of pneumonia in feedlot cattle are characterized by a longer clinical course due to chronic lung lesions. Microscopically, these lesions include interstitial fibroplasia, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, bronchiolitis obliterans, and epithelial metaplasia of the airways. Herein, the aim was to review, under a medical perspective, the pathologic mechanisms operating in these chronic pneumonic lesions in calves. Based on the similarities of these changes to those reported in bronchiolitis obliterans/organising pneumonia (BO/OP) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in human beings, calves are proposed as an alternative animal model

Is ultra-violet radiation the main force shaping molecular evolution of varicella-zoster virus?

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Varicella (chickenpox) exhibits a characteristic epidemiological pattern which is associated with climate. In general, primary infections in tropical regions are comparatively less frequent among children than in temperate regions. This peculiarity regarding varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection among certain age groups in tropical regions results in increased susceptibility during adulthood in these regions. Moreover, this disease shows a cyclic behavior in which the number of cases increases significantly during winter and spring. This observation further supports the participation of environmental factors in global epidemiology of chickenpox. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for this distinctive disease behavior are not understood completely. In a recent publication, Philip S. Rice has put forward an interesting hypothesis suggesting that ultra-violet (UV) radiation is the major environmental factor driving the molecular evolution of VZV.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>While we welcomed the attempt to explain the mechanisms controlling VZV transmission and distribution, we argue that Rice's hypothesis takes lightly the circulation of the so called "temperate VZV genotypes" in tropical regions and, to certain degree, overlooks the predominance of such lineages in certain non-temperate areas. Here, we further discuss and present new information about the overwhelming dominance of temperate VZV genotypes in Mexico regardless of geographical location and climate.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>UV radiation does not satisfactorily explain the distribution of VZV genotypes in different tropical and temperate regions of Mexico. Additionally, the cyclic behavior of varicella does not shown significant differences between regions with different climates in the country. More studies should be conducted to identify the factors directly involved in viral spreading. A better understanding of the modes of transmissions exploited by VZV and their effect on viral fitness is likely to facilitate the implementation of preventive measures for disease control.</p

Sex Identification of in vitro Plants of Carica papaya L. MSXJ Hybrid through Molecular Markers

Objective: To identify the sex in vitro plants of the MSXJ hybrid papaya (Carica papaya L.) obtained via somatic organogenesis, using molecular markers SCAR type. Design/methodology/approach: Plants of the MSXJ hybrid papaya with eight months of age and during the fruiting stage were collected at the municipality of Cotaxtla, Veracruz. They were superficially disinfected, with plenty of running water, detergent for 30 minutes, 70% alcohol was added for one minute, 30% commercial chlorine for another 30 minutes and rinsed with sterile distilled water. Subsequently the meristems were grown under a MS medium, and after 30 days a subculture was performed. The extraction of DNA was performed using the Doyle and Doyle method. The PCR was done by the Deputy et al. method, and initiators T1, T12 and W11 were used. Results: Initiator T1 was positive control. Initiators T12 and W11 allowed the amplification of fragments identifying hermaphrodite, female and male plants, while the T12 and W11 initiators were specific to hermaphrodite plants. Study limitations/implications: Papaya producers know the genus of plants three months after planting. Sexuality in papaya plants cannot be differentiated until the flowering step. Findings/conclusions: the implementation of molecular markers could facilitate large-scale plant selection, reducing costs, maintenance time and the elimination of plants with unwanted sex.Objective: To identify the sex of in vitro plants of papaya (Carica papaya L.) Comparación de métodos para analizar materia orgánica en materiales orgánicos: Comparison of methods for analyzing organic matter in organic materials

Se compararon dos métodos (combustión húmeda y calcinación a 550 ºC) para la determinación de la materia orgánica en materiales orgánicos. En el ensayo participaron nueve laboratorios, empleando cinco materiales orgánicos (tres composts y dos sustratos), analizados por cuadruplicado. La precisión se evaluó calculando la repetibilidad y la reproducibilidad, según la norma COVENIN 2972-92 (ISO 5725-86). No se encontraron diferencias significativas entre métodos, laboratorios, ni réplicas, por lo que se asume que los métodos comparados generan resultados estadísticamente iguales. La precisión evaluada a través de la repetibilidad y la reproducibilidad no resultó dependiente del nivel de materia orgánica. Los menores valores de repetibilidad y reproducibilidad obtenidos con el método de calcinación indican que esta modalidad analítica es más precisa. Se recomienda la aplicación del método de calcinación porque se basa en un procedimiento rápido, sencillo, no consume reactivos químicos y no genera desechos tóxicos para el ambiente y la salud

Mature congenital intraneural teratoma in cerebellum of pig

The biological behavior of teratomas depends on several interdependent clinical and epidemiological variables such as age at diagnosis, sex, tumor microenvironment, and tumor morphology, among others. All these variables are correlated to different cytogenetic and molecular aberrations (Harms et al., 2006). There are null reports of teratomas in pigs. The aim of this study was to characterize the tissues present in a mature congenital intraneural teratoma in the cerebellum area of a Landrace female pig of 6-7 weeks old. In this study, tissue control samples were used to validate each staining method. Sections from the teratoma showed normal histology of the cerebellum, including rounded Purkinje neurons with abundant cytoplasm, euchromatic nuclei, and prominent nucleoli; glial cells with a scarce amount of cytoplasm and small and highly basophile-nuclei (compact chromatin) and axonal tracts (white matter). Interestingly, we also observed areas with tissues different from the nervous tissue, including bundles of well-defined skeletal muscle fibers with a striated pattern and peripheral nuclei; hyaline cartilage plaques, with prominent presence of chondrocytes in their lagoons forming isogenous groups surrounded by a territorial and interterritorial matrix; trabeculated bone tissue; and adipocytes, which are ringshaped cells with peripheral flattened nuclei, as a result of the presence of a central large lipid droplet.
