Fractional Integration and Structural Breaks in U.S. Macro Dynamics

    Get PDF
This paper identifies structural breaks in the post-World War II joint dynamics of U.S. inflation, unemployment and the short-term interest rate. We derive a structural break-date procedure which allows for long-memory behavior in all three series and perform the analysis for alternative data frequencies. Both long-memory and short-run coefficients are relevant for characterizing the changing patterns of U.S. macroeconomic dynamics. We provide an economic interpretation of those changes by examining the link between macroeconomic events and structural breaks.Fractional integration, structural breaks, multivariate analysis, inflation dynamics

Technology Shocks and Hours Worked: A Fractional Integration Perspective

    Get PDF
Previous research has found that the response of hours worked to a technology shock crucially depends on whether the variable hours is assumed to be an I(0) or an I(1) variable ex-ante. In this paper we employ a multivariate fractionally integrated model which allows us to determine simultaneously the order of integration of hours worked and the response of hours to a technology shock. We find that hours fall on impact in response to a positive technology shock.

Universality on higher order Hardy spaces

We prove a Seidel-Walsh-type theorem about universality of a sequence of derivation-composition operators generated by automorphisms of the unit disk in the setting of the higher order Hardy spaces. Moreover, some related positive or negative assertions involving interpolating sequences and sequences between two tangent circles are established for the class of bounded functions in the unit disk. Our statements improve earlier ones due to Herzog and to the first and third authors.Plan Andaluz de Investigación (Junta de Andalucía)Dirección General de Enseñanza Superior (DGES). Eco-Label Certification: A Case Study of the Campeche Shrimp Fishery, Mexico

    Get PDF
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco—label certifies that seafood comes from a sustainable source. The use of this eco—label lags behind in the developing world, where ecosystem approaches to fishery management have not yet been widely implemented. However, the Food and Agriculture Organization under its REBYC—II LAC project is addressing ecosystem concerns within the shrimp trawl fisheries of a number of developing countries in Latin America and the Caribbean by helping them to improve management of the negative ecosystem impacts by modifying their gear to reduce by—catch and habitat damage. This study investigates how the potential improvements identified by the REBYC—II LAC project will help in satisfying the requirements for obtaining an MSC certification in the Campeche shrimp fishery in Mexico. The feasibility and desirability of obtaining an MSC certification in this fishery was assessed by interviewing managers, fishers, processors, and other relevant stakeholders of the fishery. By comparing the MSC certification requirements with the current conditions of the Campeche shrimp fishery, this paper shows that the fishery is currently not certifiable. Although the REBYC—II LAC project could represent a significant step towards the potential certification of the fishery, further actions will need to be implemented by the Mexican management authorities and private sector, if certification is sought. This paper should help guide the Campeche shrimp industry and fishery managers towards the necessary steps for achieving sustainability

Benchmarking Particle Filter Algorithms for Efficient Velodyne-Based Vehicle Localization

    Get PDF
Keeping a vehicle well-localized within a prebuilt-map is at the core of any autonomous vehicle navigation system. In this work, we show that both standard SIR sampling and rejection-based optimal sampling are suitable for efficient (10 to 20 ms) real-time pose tracking without feature detection that is using raw point clouds from a 3D LiDAR. Motivated by the large amount of information captured by these sensors, we perform a systematic statistical analysis of how many points are actually required to reach an optimal ratio between efficiency and positioning accuracy. Furthermore, initialization from adverse conditions, e.g., poor GPS signal in urban canyons, we also identify the optimal particle filter settings required to ensure convergence. Our findings include that a decimation factor between 100 and 200 on incoming point clouds provides a large savings in computational cost with a negligible loss in localization accuracy for a VLP-16 scanner. Furthermore, an initial density of ∼2 particles/m 2 is required to achieve 100% convergence success for large-scale (∼100,000 m 2 ), outdoor global localization without any additional hint from GPS or magnetic field sensors. All implementations have been released as open-source software

Digitalization beyond technology: Proposing an explanatory and predictive model for digital culture in organizations

    Get PDF
Continuous technological advancements and digitalization are transforming organizations’ resources and capabilities, yet many have not adapted their corporate culture accordingly. Aligning with a digital-oriented culture archetype is crucial for successful digital transformation. This paper presents a research model that predicts digital culture in organizations based on traditional culture archetypes. Using cutting-edge multivariate analysis techniques, such as PLS-SEM, IPMA, or PLS-Predict, on a sample of 285 managers from Spanish companies, the results indicate that a People-oriented culture archetype is the most important for digital culture, while values inherent to Norms or Goals culture archetypes hinder it. The paper contributes to the development of Functionalist and Structuralist Theories of culture, demonstrating the interplay of micro-cultures and cultural archetypes within an organization.Junta de Andalucía SEJ-57

Congruency fit: beyond performance in the auto supplier industry

    Get PDF
The effects of manufacturing strategy (MS) and technology (T) on performance have been studied separately, but few studies have examined the relationship between MS and T practices clusters that improve effectiveness when implemented jointly, and even then they do not consider possible congruency between the two. This paper develops a congruency (selection) model to test for any interconnection between said clusters, without addressing causation or their combined effect on performance. The implicit outcome is that the plant will achieve a desirable effectiveness level. Through a wide-ranging survey of auto supplier plants, two approaches are considered: 1) grouping both clusters in pairs (canonical correlation analysis); and 2) a more general selection view version, with practices from both clusters related multidimensionally and subordinated by bivariate analysis (regression) to test for any congruent pattern. Both methods find a congruent relationship between manufacturing strategy and technology practice clusters, although the second provides greater detail.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia DPI-2006-0553

Single-parent families, educational gradient, and child deprivation: The cases of Italy and Spain

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThis work examines whether the increase of single parenthood in Italy and Spain, specifically amongst women in an unfavourable socioeconomic position, has repercussions for child well-being, understood here as material deprivation. In particular, our main objective is to analyse the possible differential impact of single parenthood on children’s material deprivation in relation to mothers’ level of education. Using the 2014 EU-SILC Module on material deprivation, we identify five areas of child deprivation based on the EU-MODA approach: nutrition, clothing, education, leisure, and social life. In the case of Italy, our main results indicate that, compared to children from two-parent households, children of single mothers with a low level of education have a higher risk of nutrition and clothing deprivation. In Spain, living in a single-parent household is associated with a higher risk of deprivation in terms of social life for those children whose mothers do not have a high level of education. Therefore, the findings suggest that in both countries the growth of single parenthood amongst women with a lower educational level may have an impact on child well-being inequality. This article contributes empirical data to the growing literature on the rise of child poverty in Southern European countries.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (RTI2018-099666-B-I00)Publicación en abierto financiada por el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Castilla y León (BUCLE), con cargo al Programa Operativo 2014ES16RFOP009 FEDER 2014-2020 DE CASTILLA Y LEÓN, Actuación:20007-CL - Apoyo Consorcio BUCL

The southern sector of Seville in the 16th century: graphical analysis of the urban fabric supplemented with archaeological and building information

[EN] Urban analysis strategies are effective in sectors where the gradual evolution of the urban fabric has preserved traces of the urbanisation process, thereby facilitating the definition and sequencing of structural units. In consolidated sectors the traumatic transformations caused by the replacement of singular buildings and the opening of large public spaces generate discontinuities in the evolution of the urban structure, obscuring our understanding of these traces. This difficulty can be overcome by supplementing graphical strategies with analyses of the subsoil and the buildings themselves. We have used this procedure to reconstruct the morphology of the southern sector of Seville in the 16th century. As proof of its effectiveness, we discuss the results obtained in the analysis of two of the blocks that form part of the sector: the ones on which the Santo Tomás College and Santa María de Jesús University were founded.Universidad de Sevilla.
