Error correcting codes from quasi-Hadamard matrices

Levenshtein described in [5] a method for constructing error correcting codes which meet the Plotkin bounds, provided suitable Ha- damard matrices exist. Uncertainty about the existence of Hadamard matrices on all orders multiple of 4 is a source of difficulties for the prac- tical application of this method. Here we extend the method to the case of quasi-Hadamard matrices. Since efficient algorithms for constructing quasi-Hadamard matrices are potentially available from the literature (e.g. [7]), good error correcting codes may be constructed in practise. We illustrate the method with some examples.Junta de Andalucía FQM–29

Introducción a la citología digestiva en pequeños animales

    Get PDF
Cytology is an easy, fast cost-effective diagnostic method very atĂractive to practitioners. Also, the advent of endoscopy has made gastrointestinal tract cytology a non invasive method. However, results of the cytologic analysis depend on a proper obtention and preparation of the samples and on our skill to identify the different cell types observed. In this article the essentials for an effective approach to diagnostic gastrointestinal tract cytology are presented: endoscopy equipment, selection, obtention and number of biopsy samples and the basis for the identification of cells present in the digestive tract of dogs and cats

Strategies for psychosocial risk management in manufacturing

    Get PDF
Psychosocial risk is a concern for employers across Europe. Psychosocial risk management, however, is younger than other risk management fields such as safety, hygiene, and ergonomics. Psychosocial risk control prevents accidents and absenteeism. This study examines strategies for psychosocial risk management in manufacturing organizations. The study employs structural equation modeling to analyze results of the European Survey of Enterprises onNewand Emerging Risks (ESENER), a survey that fills an information gap concerning health and safety at work. The analysis yields three latent variables: psychosocial safety management, health and safety activities, and psychosocial performance. The study shows the benefits of adopting psychosocial safety management systems to improve psychosocial risk performance. Psychosocial preventive activities mediate the relationship between psychosocial safety management and psychosocial performance. Effective psychosocial risk management's benefits are so great that policymakers should specifically promote psychosocial risk management. Promoting psychosocial management systems and psychosocial preventive activities is likely to effectively improve overall psychosocial performance in European countries

    Searching for partial Hadamard matrices

    Get PDF
Three algorithms looking for pretty large partial Hadamard ma- trices are described. Here “large” means that hopefully about a third of a Hadamard matrix (which is the best asymptotic result known so far, [8]) is achieved. The first one performs some kind of local exhaustive search, and consequently is expensive from the time consuming point of view. The second one comes from the adaptation of the best genetic algorithm known so far searching for cliques in a graph, due to Singh and Gupta [21]. The last one consists in another heuristic search, which prioritizes the required processing time better than the final size of the partial Hadamard matrix to be obtained. In all cases, the key idea is characterizing the adjacency properties of vertices in a particular subgraph Gt of Ito’s Hadamard Graph (4t) [18], since cliques of order m in Gt can be seen as (m + 3) × 4t partial Hadamard matrices.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación MTM2008-06578Junta de Andalucía FQM-016Junta de Andalucía P07-FQM-0298

Assessing the usefulness of clostridia spores for evaluating sewage sludge hygienization

    Get PDF
The capability of clostridia spores to act as pathogen indicators in sewage sludge treatment was investigated. Sulfite-reducing clostridia and E. coli levels were monitored during waste activated sludge pre-treatments (alkali and ultrasound) and its subsequent mesophilic anaerobic digestion. E. coli was maintained or reduced depending on treatment type and intensity. However, alkali pre-treatment (35.3 gNaOH/kg TS) by itself and alkali (157 gNaOH/kg TS) and ultrasound (27,000 kJ/kg TS) pre-treatments followed by anaerobic digestion provoked reproducible clostridia increases. Specifically, up to 2.7 log10 after 35.3 gNaOH/kg TS pre-treatment and up to 1.9 and 1.1 log10 after digesting the 157 gNaOH/kg TS and 27,000 kJ/kg TS pre-treated sludge, respectively. Having rejected the hypotheses of sporulation and floc dissipation, the most plausible explanation for these clostridia increases is re-growth. These results question the suitability of clostridia spores as indicators of sludge treatment and other biological treatments where clostridia may have a role

A genetic algorithm based robust blind digital watermarking scheme is presented. The experimental results show that our scheme keeps invisibility, security and robustness more likely than other proposals in the literature, thanks to the GA pretreatment.Junta de AndalucĂa FQM-01

    ACS Searching for D4t-Hadamard Matrices

    Get PDF
An Ant Colony System (ACS) looking for cocyclic Hadamard matrices over dihedral groups D4t is described. The underlying weighted graph consists of the rooted trees described in [1], whose vertices are certain subsets of coboundaries. A branch of these trees defines a D4t- Hadamard matrix if and only if two conditions hold: (i) Ii = i − 1 and, (ii) ci = t, for every 2 ≀ i ≀ t, where Ii and ci denote the number of ipaths and i-intersections (see [3] for details) related to the coboundaries defining the branch. The pheromone and heuristic values of our ACS are defined in such a way that condition (i) is always satisfied, and condition (ii) is closely to be satisfied.

The term seborrhea or keratoseborrheic syndrome describes a non-specific state of abnormal epidermal keratinization, that may arise with a primary or secondary origin, associated, in this latter case, with multiple canine dermatoses. Antiseborrheic therapy plays an importan: role in supporting specific treatment of the primary cause; moreover, it is the only possible treatment in those cases of idiopathic primary seborrhea. Currently, antiseborrheic therapy is based on topical formulations, but sometimes we are confused by the huge amount of shampoos, lotions, creams, ointments and others commercially available stuffs. Their proper use depends upon an understanding of their formulation and indications of their active components. From that point it is better to use a limited number of well known products

Nonuniqueness of best rational Chebyshev approximations on the unit disk

    Get PDF
AbstractIn the past it has been unknown whether complex rational best Chebyshev approximations (BAs) on the unit disk need be unique. This paper answers this and related questions by exhibiting examples in which: (a) the BA is not unique, (b) the number of distinct BAs is arbitrarily large, (c) the BA to a real analytic function f (i.e., f(z) = f(z)) among rational functions with real coefficients is not unique, and (d) the complex BAs to such a function are better than any approximation with real coefficients. Except in case (d), our constructions hold for approximation of arbitrary type (m, n) with n â©Ÿ 1. Finally, by the same methods we also establish the new result that if a function is approximated on a small disk about 0 of radius Δ (or on an interval of length Δ), then as Δ → 0, the BA need not in general approach the corresponding PadĂ© approximant in a sense considered by J. L. Walsh
