    Sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen stocks of intertidal seagrass meadows in a dynamic and impacted wetland: Effects of coastal infrastructure constructions and meadow establishment time

    Seagrass meadows, through their large capacity to sequester and store organic carbon in their sediments, contribute to mitigate climatic change. However, these ecosystems have experienced large losses and degrada-tion worldwide due to anthropogenic and natural impacts and they are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. When a meadow is impacted, the vegetation is partial-or completely lost, and the sediment is exposed to the atmosphere or water column, resulting in the erosion and remineralisation of the carbon stored. This paper addresses the effects of the construction of coastal infrastructures on sediment properties, organic carbon, and total nitrogen stocks of intertidal seagrass meadows, as well as the size of such stocks in relation to meadow establishing time (recently and old established meadows). Three intertidal seagrass meadows impacted by coastal constructions (with 0% seagrass cover at present) and three adjacent non-impacted old-established meadows (with 100% seagrass cover at present) were studied along with an area of bare sediment and two recent-established seagrass meadows. We observed that the non-impacted areas presented 3-fold higher per-centage of mud and 1.5 times higher sedimentary organic carbon stock than impacted areas. Although the impacted area was relatively small (0.05-0.07 ha), coastal infrastructures caused a significant reduction of the sedimentary carbon stock, between 1.1 and 2.2 Mg OC, and a total loss of the carbon sequestration capacity of the impacted meadow. We also found that the organic carbon stock and total nitrogen stock of the recent -established meadow were 30% lower than those of the old-established ones, indicating that OC and TN accu-mulation within the meadows is a continuous process, which has important consequences for conservation and restoration actions.     Preaggregation of Asphaltenes in the Presence of Natural Polymers by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

    Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), its extract, cardanol, and polycardanol, are known to influence the dispersion behavior of asphaltenes in model solvent mixtures. CNSL and cardanol act as dispersants, while polycardanol can act as both dispersant or flocculant depending on its molecular architecture, concentration, and asphaltene source. In this work, the preaggregation of asphaltenes in model solvents (toluene, n-heptane, and their mixtures) has been studied by atomistic molecular dynamics simulation. The influence of cardanol, addition polycardanol, and condensation polycardanol as additives has been addressed. The simulation results remarkably reproduce the experimental trends, thus contributing to a better understanding of the molecular processes underlying the stabilization or precipitation of asphaltenes by cardanols and their polymers

    Emotional Appetite Questionnaire : psychometric properties in Brazilian adult samples before and after the COVID-19 pandemic onset

    Background: Appetite represents a desire of a person to eat specific food in order to reach satisfaction and pleasure states. This desire may be associated with the experience of negative or positive emotions (emotional appetite). Emotional appetite can influence eating behavior, and its investigation is relevant to avoid possible damage to health resulting from a disordered eating. Objectives: To adapt the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ) to the Portuguese language; to assess the validity and reliability of the data; and to assess emotional appetite in three samples of adults collected before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The Portuguese version of the EMAQ was presented after translation, back-translation, and content analysis. Two studies were conducted, the first before and the second after the pandemic onset. Three samples were formed (2019: Sample 1 (age = 19.7 ± 1.5 years) n = 323; 2020: Sample 2 (age = 21.3 ± 1.8 years) n = 1,011; and Sample 3 (age = 28.9 ± 3.1 years) n = 909). An exploratory strategy with parallel analysis was performed. The analyses were conducted in FACTOR and R (lavaan and semTools packages) software. After determining the best-fit model for the data, emotional appetite was examined considering decrease, non-alteration, and increase in appetite in the face of positive and negative emotions/situations. The profile of emotional appetite was determined using a circumplex model. Results: The two-factor model described by the valence of emotions/situations fitted the samples (Comparative Fit Indexminimum-maximum = 0.95–0.98; Tucker-Lewis Index = 0.94–0.98; Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.03–0.08; aord = 0.78–0.88). Increases in appetite were more frequent for positive emotions/ situations (52.0–57.5%), and both decreases (35.4–44.5%) and increases (50.0–56.2%) in appetite were observed for negative emotions/situations. Emotions with negative valence and activation were more relevant to appetite reduction, while a significant increase in appetite was observed with anxiety (negative valence and positive activation). Conclusion: Different emotions and situations may influence appetite in people, and such an investigation may be useful in preparing eating protocols.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Massive open star clusters using the VVV survey II. Discovery of six clusters with Wolf-Rayet stars

    Context: The ESO Public Survey "VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea" (VVV) provides deep multi-epoch infrared observations for an unprecedented 562 sq. degrees of the Galactic bulge, and adjacent regions of the disk. In this survey nearly 150 new open clusters and cluster candidates have been discovered. Aims: This is the second in a series of papers about young, massive open clusters observed using the VVV survey. We present the first study of six recently discovered clusters. These clusters contain at least one newly discovered Wolf-Rayet (WR) star. Methods: Following the methodology presented in the first paper of the series, wide-field, deep JHKs VVV observations, combined with new infrared spectroscopy, are employed to constrain fundamental parameters for a subset of clusters. Results: We affirm that the six studied stellar groups are real young (2-7 Myr) and massive (between 0.8 and 2.2 10^3 Msol) clusters. They are highly obscured (Av ~ 5-24 mag) and compact (1-2 pc). In addition to WR stars, two of the six clusters also contain at least one red supergiant star. We claim the discovery of 8 new WR stars, and 3 stars showing WR-like emission lines which could be classified WR or OIf. Preliminary analysis provides initial masses of ~30-50 Msol for the WR stars. Finally,we discuss the spiral structure of the Galaxy using as tracers the six new clusters together with the previously studied VVV clusters.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figurs, accepted in A&

    The properties of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose serious difficulties for the development of an effective prophylactic vaccine. Here we describe the construction and characterization of recombinant (r), replication-competent forms of rhesus monkey rhadinovirus (RRV), a gamma-2 herpesvirus, containing a near-full-length (nfl) genome of the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). A 306-nucleotide deletion in the pol gene rendered this nfl genome replication-incompetent as a consequence of deletion of the active site of the essential reverse transcriptase enzyme. Three variations were constructed to drive expression of the SIV proteins: one with SIV\u27s own promoter region, one with a cytomegalovirus (cmv) immediate-early promoter/enhancer region, and one with an RRV dual promoter (p26 plus PAN). Following infection of rhesus fibroblasts in culture with these rRRV vectors, synthesis of the early protein Nef and the late structural proteins Gag and Env could be demonstrated. Expression levels of the SIV proteins were highest with the rRRV-SIVcmv-nfl construct. Electron microscopic examination of rhesus fibroblasts infected with rRRV-SIVcmv-nfl revealed numerous budding and mature SIV particles and these infected cells released impressive levels of p27 Gag protein ( \u3e 150 ng/ml) into the cell-free supernatant. The released SIV particles were shown to be incompetent for replication. Monkeys inoculated with rRRV-SIVcmv-nfl became persistently infected, made readily-detectable antibodies against SIV, and developed T-cell responses against all nine SIV gene products. Thus, rRRV expressing a near-full-length SIV genome mimics live-attenuated strains of SIV in several important respects: the infection is persistent; \u3e 95% of the SIV proteome is naturally expressed; SIV particles are formed; and CD8+ T-cell responses are maintained indefinitely in an effector-differentiated state. Although the magnitude of anti-SIV immune responses in monkeys infected with rRRV-SIVcmv-nfl falls short of what is seen with live-attenuated SIV infection, further experimentation seems warranted

    The trans-dichlorobis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) chloride was synthesized in an undergraduate laboratory and its aquation reaction was carried out at different temperatures. This reaction follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and the rate constants, determined at 25, 35, 45, 55 and 70 Âş C, are 1.44 x 10-3; 5.14 x 10-3; 1.48 x 10-2; 4.21 x 10-2 and 2.21 x 10-1 s-1, respectively. The activation energy is 93.99 ± 2.88 kJ mol-1

    Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Aggregation and Pre-aggregation Phenomena of Asphaltenes in Model Solvent Mixtures by Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Quantum Mechanical Calculations

    This work presents a systematic study of asphaltene pre-aggregation phenomena in the absence and in the presence of ionic liquids (ILs) from the family of 1-alkyl-3- methylimidazolium by molecular dynamics simulations. The effects of the alkyl chain length of the cation (studying ILs with alkyl chains between C4 and C10) and of the dimension of the anion (testing chloride and bromide) on the aggregation behavior of asphaltenes have been studied. To correlate the results obtained with the direct interaction between each additive and asphaltene, the latter was investigated both by the analysis of the radial distribution functions obtained by molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanical calculations. The DFT method was used to calculate the relative stability of the asphaltene-ionic liquid dimers and also the energy, shape, and spatial distribution of frontier orbitals. It was found that all the ionic liquids studied present a dispersing effect on asphaltene in model solvents, except for mixtures rich in toluene where, in most cases, the opposite effect is observed. This is accompanied by the interaction intensity as measured by radial distribution functions. The effects of the alkyl side chain length of the cation and of the anion radius are subtler, but it seems that the asphaltene dispersion effect increases with the length of the cation’s alkyl side chain and decreases with the radius of the anion; these effects are more clearly observed in the mixtures richer in n-heptane. These trends were corroborated by DFT calculations, which showed that the energetic stability of the asphaltene-additive dimer is as higher as the alkyl chain is longer and the anion is smaller. Preaggregation phenomena were also studied in mixtures containing CO2, which proved to be a precipitating agent as observed experimentally.
