Variação anatômica da lobulação pulmonar: estudo cadavérico
Introdução: Os cirurgiões devem estar cientes das variações anatômicas do pulmão durante as ressecções lobares ou
segmentares do pulmão.

Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research
Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4
While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge
of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In
the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of
Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding.

Previous issue date: 2014Background: When breastfeeding is difficult or impossible during the neonatal period, an analysis of muscle
activity can help determine the best method for substituting it to promote the child’s development. The aim of this
study was to analyze the electrical activity of the masseter muscle using surface electromyography during suction
in term newborns by comparing breastfeeding, bottle and cup feeding.
Methods: An observational, cross-sectional analytical study was carried out on healthy, clinically stable term infants,
assigned to receive either breast, or bottle or cup feeding. Setting was a Baby Friendly accredited hospital. Muscle
activity was analyzed when each infant showed interest in sucking using surface electromyography. Root mean
square averages (RMS) recorded in microvolts were transformed into percentages (normalization) of the reference
value. The three groups were compared by ANOVA; the “stepwise” method of the multiple linear regression analysis
tested the model which best defined the activity of the masseter muscle in the sample at a significance level of 5%.
Results: Participants were 81 full term newborns (27 per group), from 2 to 28 days of life. RMS values were lower
for bottle (mean 44.2%, SD 14.1) than breast feeding (mean 58.3%, SD 12.7) (P = 0.003, ANOVA); cup feeding (52.5%,
SD 18.2%) was not significantly different (P > 0.05). For every gram of weight increase, RMS increased by 0.010 units.
Conclusions: Masseter activity was significantly higher in breastfed newborns than in bottle-fed newborns, who
presented the lowest RMS values. Levels of masseter activity during cup-feeding were between those of breast and
bottle feeding, and did not significantly differ from either group. This study in healthy full term neonates endorses
cup rather than bottle feeding as a temporary substitute for breastfeeding
Chewing preference and its relationship with postural muscular electric potential
ABSTRACT Objective: to verify if the chewing side preference interferes in the postural muscular electrical potential. Methods: fifty-five volunteers (41 women and 14 men; average age of 26 years) were evaluated by Odontology (determining the type of dental occlusion), by a speech therapist (determining the chewing side preference) and by a physiotherapist (evaluating the postural muscular electrical potential). The three professionals had no communication regarding the evaluations, in order to keep the study partially blind. For chewing preference electrognatography was used for muscles: sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezium, gluteus medius and tibialis anterior, bilaterally, in static orthostatic posture. Results: there was statistical significance for the muscular electrical potential of the sternocleidomastoid and anterior tibial, when there was right chewing preference (p=0.030 for both) and left chewing preference (p=0.0028 and p=0.0020, respectively). In alternate bilateral chewing there was tendency to symmetry of postural muscular electrical activation, in all muscles. Conclusion: there was presence of asymmetry of postural muscular electrical activation in the sternocleidomastoid and tibialis anterior, when chewing side preference was at right or left. In the presence of alternate bilateral mastication, there was tendency of symmetry of postural muscular electrical activation for all studied musculatures
