    Catalysis of Stark-Tuned Interactions Between Ultracold Rydberg Atoms

    We present the study of the catalysis effect in the resonant energy transfer between ultracold 85Rb Rydberg atoms. We have investigated the energy transfer process of 34p + 34p → 34s + 35s, and observed Stark-tuned Forster resonances. When additional Rydberg atoms of 34d state are included in the interaction, an increase in the population of 34s states atoms is observed. Although the 34d state atoms do not directly participate in the resonant energy transfer that produces 34s state atoms, they add an additional interaction channel 34p + 34d 34d + 34 p that is resonant for all electric fields. We have also investigated the time dependence of the resonant interactions of 34p → + 34p → 34s + 35s, compared the experimental results with the numerical simulations of simple models, and found them to be in good agreement

    Seasonal storage for solar thermal systems in Australia?

    Seasonal storage systems have been operating in various European countries since 1985. Combined with solar collectors, these systems are known as &lsquo;central solar heating plants with seasonal storage&rsquo; (CSHPSS). While these systems have been shown to be technically feasible, their cost is still too high to make them competitive with fossil fuels.In Australia, we have quite different conditions to those countries where CSHPSS have been trialled. In general, we experience higher radiation levels, ambient temperatures and cooling loads. Our heating loads and energy prices are also usually lower. As a result, any evaluation of CSPSS operating in a European context may not be valid for Australian conditions. To the authors&rsquo; knowledge, no evaluation of these systems has been carried out for Australia.This paper therefore attempts an initial assessment of these systems and their viability for Australia. The paper first describes the various types of CSHPSS and then reviews their current status. The performance of one type of CSHPSS operating in several locations of Australia has been predicted using a TRNSYS model. The simulations indicated that the design guidelines for Europe are inappropriate for Australia and would result in greatly over-sized systems.An indication of the financial viability of the system was determined by calculating a simple payback period for a variety of fossil fuels. This type of seasonal storage systems appears to be financially attractive in areas of southern Australia where the solar system is displacing LPG.<br /

    An Evaluation of a Proposed Ventilation System for Melbourne's CH2 Building

    The understanding of ventilation requirements in commercial buildings has been significantly revised in the last 10-15 years. A link between health, productivity and increased fresh air use has been established by some research and this understanding underpins the ventilation philosophy adopted for the CH2 building. The ventilation system design for CH2 that has been evaluated in this paper envisages a mechanically driven system during the day, using the displacement technique to distribute filtered air. All introduced air will be drawn from outside and no recycling of air will occur. Natural ventilation will be employed at night using the stack effect, enhanced by turbine ventilators. This paper critiques the proposed ventilation system in the light of international experience and the particular conditions of the building's location. The evidence suggests that natural ventilation sometimes may be inadequate to achieve the desired objectives. Minimization of indoor pollutants, adequate filtration and high levels of ventilation should, however, ensure satisfactory air quality during occupied hours

    Solar lanterns or solar home lighting systems – community preferences in East Timor

    Access to electrification in rural areas of East Timor is extremely limited with as few as 5% of rural households connected to electricity. The government of East Timor intends to increase rural access to electricity significantly in the coming decade. The introduction of small PV systems is envisaged for many households in the most remote areas. Several agencies have piloted the introduction of small solar home systems (SHS) and solar lanterns. In the Railaco sub-district of East Timor, some 1000 households have experience of using either SHS and/or solar lanterns and are in a unique position to indicate a preference regarding these forms of PV lighting technology. This paper reports on a survey of 76 households in Railaco investigating experience with PV lighting systems. Results of the survey indicate a strong preference by users for SHS rather than lanterns. The preference for SHS arose from a range of factors including: a perception of better light quality; ability to illuminate the whole house; reduced risk of damage to the PV equipment; and longer duration of nightly operation. The research indicates that where a single PV lighting system is provided, users are likely to prefer SHS to solar lanterns.<br /

    Evaluation of a heat pump system for greenhouse heating

    Greenhouse heating costs for some commercial growers in southern Australia are now a significant production cost. This is particularly the case for those operators who installed heating systems using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when this fuel was relatively inexpensive. Heat pump systems used in various configurations have been suggested as an option for reducing energy use and costs for greenhouse heating, particularly if off-peak electricity is used. This paper investigates the financial and environmental viability of an air-to-water heat pump system for a 4000 m2 greenhouse, located 120 km north of Melbourne, Victoria. The simulation software, TRNSYS, was used to predict the performance of the system. The heat pump system was found to have a simple payback period of approximately six years and reduce LPG consumption by 16%. Greenhouse gas emissions were 3% higher using the heat pump system, compared to the existing LPG boiler.<br /

    Planning healthy, liveable and sustainable cities: How can indicators inform policy?

    Creating ‘liveable’ communities that are healthy and sustainable is an aspiration of policymakers in Australia and overseas. Indicators are being used at the national, state and local level to compare the liveability of cities and regions. Yet, there are challenges in the adoption of such indicators. Planning scholars see a challenge in creating indicators that measure something publicly valued, while public health researchers are concerned about scant systemic research on relationships between policies, the built environment, and health and well-being. This article provides an overview of liveability indicators used to date in Australia and internationally. It then outlines the results of consultations with Melbourne-based academics and decision-makers, on how to increase their utility and support the creation of healthy, liveable and sustainable cities

    Oxidative footprinting in the study of structure and function of membrane proteins: Current state and perspectives

    Membrane proteins, such as receptors, transporters and ion channels, control the vast majority of cellular signalling and metabolite exchange processes and thus are becoming key pharmacological targets. Obtaining structural information by usage of traditional structural biology techniques is limited by the requirements for the protein samples to be highly pure and stable when handled in high concentrations and in nonnative buffer systems, which is often difficult to achieve for membrane targets. Hence, there is a growing requirement for the use of hybrid, integrative approaches to study the dyna mic and functional aspects of membrane proteins in physiologically relevant conditions. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the field of oxidative labelling techniques and in particular the X-ray radiolytic footprinting in combination with mass spectrometry (MS) (XF-MS), which provide residue-specific information on the solvent accessibility of proteins. In combination with both low- and high-resolution data from other structural biology approaches, it is capable of providing valuable insights into dynamics of membrane proteins, which have been difficult to obtain by other structural techniques, proving a highly complementary technique to address structure and function of membrane targets. XF-MS has demonstrated a unique capability for identification of structural waters and conformational changes in proteins at both a high degree of spatial and a high degree of temporal resolution. Here, we provide a perspective on the place of XF-MS among other structural biology methods and showcase some of the latest developments in its usage for studying water-mediated transmembrane (TM) signalling, ion transport and ligand-induced allosteric conformational changes in membrane proteins
