Conceptualization of rice with low glycemic index: perspectives from the major european consumers

    Get PDF
Rice and cereal consumption has become a concern for consumers due to usually high glycaemic indexes (GI), which is a critical issue for a balanced and healthy diet. Therefore, the development of new products with low GI is an important target of the industry, particularly in countries with high consumption. This study assesses consumers’ perceptions about “rice” and “rice with low GI” and evaluates the effect of consumers’ rice consumption profiles through the application of a free word association technique in a structured self-administered electronic questionnaire with 256 Portuguese consumers (the European market with the highest per capita consumption of rice by far). The frequency of rice consumption was evaluated, and the consumption profile was determined through a hierarchical cluster analysis, with 9% identified as daily consumers. The response words were categorized by the triangulation technique, and the association between the word categories and dimensions, sociodemographic characteristics, and consumption profile were determined. Respondents most frequently associated “rice” with rice dishes, its sensory attributes, and nutrition, highlighting the satisfaction of nutritional and hedonic needs. Consumers revealed positive expectations in relation to the functionality of “rice with low GI”. The consumers’ rice consumption profiles, sex, age, and educational levels influenced their perception towards “rice“ and “rice with low GI”. This study provides important insights for the industry to develop a consumer-oriented, low GI rice product.: This research was funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through D. Physical ergonomic improvement and safe design of an assembly workstation through collaborative robotics

    Get PDF
One of the key interesting features of collaborative robotic applications is the potential to lighten the worker workload and potentiate better working conditions. Moreover, developing robotics applications that meets ergonomic criteria is not always a straightforward endeavor. We propose a framework to guide the safe design and conceptualization of ergonomic-driven collaborative robotics workstations. A multi-disciplinary approach involving robotics and ergonomics and human factors shaped this methodology that leads future engineers through the digital transformation of a manual assembly (with repetitive and hazardous operations) to a hybrid workstation, focusing on the physical ergonomic improvement. The framework follows four main steps, (i) the characterization of the initial condition, (ii) the risk assessment, (iii) the definition of requirements for a safe design, and (iv) the conceptualization of the hybrid workstation with all the normative implications it entails. We applied this methodology to a case study in an assembly workstation of a furniture manufacturing company. Results show that the methodology adopted sets an adequate foundation to accelerate the design and development of new human-centered collaborative robotic workstations. This work has been supported by NORTE-06-3559-FSE-000018, integrated in the invitation NORTE-59-2018-41, aiming the Hiring of Highly Qualified Human Resources, co-financed by the Regional Operational Programme of the North 2020, thematic area of Competitiveness and Employment, through the European Social Fund (ESF)

Wireless ad hoc networks on underserved communities: an efficient solution for interactive digital TV

The Brazilian government intends to use the Digital TV technology as a vehicle of digital inclusion on underserved communities. The wireless ad hoc network is a low-cost, scalable and easy solution to implement the return channel. This work analyzes the performance of an ad hoc return channel using the wireless IEEE 802.11 technology in different Brazilian geographical scenarios. The results show that a high connectivity is achieved when more than 20% of the nodes are turned on, regardless of the position of the gateway. The influence of the number of hops and the number of transmitting nodes is also analyzed. A minimum throughput of 2 Mbps can be reached for increasing number of hops in the forwarding chain for a one-node transmission. Besides, when the number of transmitting nodes increases, the aggregated throughput can achieve 3.5 Mbps. The results show that the ad hoc network is a promising solution for the return channel of the interactive Digital TV.8th IFIP/IEEE International conference on Mobile and Wireless CommunicationRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Light verbs features in European Portuguese

We present a study of constructions of the type in European Portuguese. We analyse these constructions as complex predicates where both the light verb and the noun share an important role in the predication and we focus on the aspectual combinatory properties of the two elements of the complex predicate. We propose that light verbs inherit the feature specification of the corresponding main verbs, but that the light verbs are underspecified regarding (some of) the event structure features

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunosensors are especially suited for this purpose. Here, we present a highly sensitive and selective SERS immunoassay, demonstrating for example the detection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), in a sandwich format. The strength of our biosensor lies in merging: (i) SERS-immunotags based on gold nanostars, allowing exceptional intense SERS from attached Raman probes, covalent attachment of anti-HRP antibodies by a simple chemical method providing exceptional antigen binding activity; (ii) the ease of preparation of the capture platform from a regenerated cellulose-based hydrogel, a transparent material, ideal for microfluidics applications, with low background fluorescence and Raman signal, particularly suited for preserving high activity of the covalently bound anti-HRP antibodies. The sandwich complexes formed were characterised by atomic force microscopy, and by scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron diffraction spectroscopy; and (iii) the robustness of the simple Classical Least Squares method for SERS data analysis, resulting in superior discrimination of SERS signals from the background and much better data fitting, compared to the commonly used peak integral method. Our SERS immunoassay greatly improves the detection limits of traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay approaches, and its performance is better or comparable to those of existing SERS-based immunosensors. Our approach successfully overcomes the main challenges of application at point-of-care, including increasing reproducibility, sensitivity, and specificity, associated with an environmentally friendly and robust design. Also, the proposed design withstands several cycles of regeneration, a feature absent in paper-SERS immunoassays and this opens the way for sensitive multiplexing applications on a microfluidic platform.preprintpublishe

All rights reserved.INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the most common etiology of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, there is controversy whether invasive coronary angiography (ICA) should be used initially to exclude CAD in patients presenting with new-onset HFrEF of unknown etiology. Our study aimed to develop a clinical score to quantify the risk of obstructive CAD in these patients. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional observational study of 452 consecutive patients presenting with new-onset HFrEF of unknown etiology undergoing elective ICA in one academic center, between January 2005 and December 2019. Independent predictors for obstructive CAD were identified. A risk score was developed using multivariate logistic regression of designated variables. The accuracy and discriminative power of the predictive model were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 109 patients (24.1%) presented obstructive CAD. Six independent predictors were identified and included in the score: male gender (2 points), diabetes (1 point), dyslipidemia (1 point), smoking (1 point), peripheral arterial disease (1 point), and regional wall motion abnormalities (3 points). Patients with a score ≤3 had less than 15% predicted probability of obstructive CAD. Our score showed good discriminative power (C-statistic 0.872; 95% CI 0.834-0.909: p<0.001) and calibration (p=0.333 from the goodness-of-fit test). CONCLUSIONS: A simple clinical score showed the ability to predict the risk of obstructive CAD in patients presenting with new-onset HFrEF of unknown etiology and may guide the clinician in selecting the most appropriate diagnostic modality for the assessment of obstructive CAD.proofepub_ahead_of_prin

Prototype of an affordable pressure-controlled emergency mechanical ventilator for COVID-19

We present a viable prototype of a simple mechanical ventilator intended as a last resort to ventilate COVID-19 patients. The prototype implements the pressure-controlled continuous mandatory ventilation mode (PC-CMV) with settable breathing rates, inspiration/expiration time ratios and FiO2 modulation. Although safe, the design aims to minimize the use of technical components and those used are common in industry, so its construction may be possible in times of logistical shortage or disruption or in areas with reduced access to technical materials and at a moderate cost, affordable to lower income countries. Most of the device can be manufactured by modest technical means and construction plans are provided.Comment: This version differs from version 2 in that it includes toxicological and bio-safety tests and updated electronic

Arbustus unedo essence: morphological and genetic characterization of the strawberry tree of Castelo de Paiva

The strawberry tree is a shrub native in the Mediterranean region and it can be found throughout Portugal. Unlike the case in the southern region of the country, in Castelo de Paiva a minor economic importance is given to this species. In order to preserve, to enhance the production of this species and to contribute to the boosting of the economy of the region, we proceeded to the characterization of a small sample population of this fruit tree of Castelo de Paiva in what concerns to its morphology and genetics. The morphological and genetic characterization was performed for a total of 10 genotypes. For this, 70 leaves were randomly collected from each tree. For 40 leaves, it was measured the length, the width, the peduncle length, the wet weight, the dry weight and determined the leaf area. Of the morphological characteristics analyzed, the ones that proved most useful in distinguishing the various genotypes were: the length peduncle, the wet weight and the dry weight. The remaining 30 leaves were used in the genetic characterization. This characterization was performed using a DNA marker, the ISSR. The 5 primers used in the ISSR technique proved to be polymorphic. The results from the genetic characterization suggest that variability in population genetics is medium to high

The Portuguese higher education system comprises both Universities and Polytechnic Institutes, which face an increasing pressure to demonstrate that their presence has an impact on the surrounding communities contributing to their economic development. This paper presents the estimation of the economic impact of twelve Polytechnic Institutes, located in quite diverse regions, based on a shared model so that comparisons have a collective framework of analysis. The main results obtained show that the economic impact ranged from 1.8% to 10.6% of the local GDP and that these Institutes are major local employers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
