Pie-like electrode design for high-energy density lithium–sulfur batteries

    Get PDF
Owing to the overwhelming advantage in energy density, lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is a promising next-generation electrochemical energy storage system. Despite many efforts in pursuing long cycle life, relatively little emphasis has been placed on increasing the areal energy density. Herein, we have designed and developed a ‘pie’ structured electrode, which provides an excellent balance between gravimetric and areal energy densities. Combining lotus root-like multichannel carbon nanofibers ‘filling’ and amino-functionalized graphene ‘crust’, the free-standing paper electrode (S mass loading: 3.6 mg cm[superscript −2]) delivers high specific capacity of 1,314 mAh g[superscript −1] (4.7 mAh cm[superscript −2]) at 0.1 C (0.6 mA cm[superscript −2]) accompanied with good cycling stability. Moreover, the areal capacity can be further boosted to more than 8 mAh cm[superscript −2] by stacking three layers of paper electrodes with S mass loading of 10.8 mg cm[superscript −2].National Science Foundation (U.S.) (DMR-1120901)Wuxi Weifu High-technology Group Co., Ltd

Spontaneous sharp bending of DNA: role of melting bubbles

    Get PDF
The role of centrally located and distributed base pair mismatches (‘melting bubbles’) on localized bending and stiffness of short dsDNA fragments is evaluated using time-dependent fluorescence lifetime measurements. Distributed melting bubbles are found to induce larger bending angles and decreased levels of stiffness in DNA than centrally located ones of comparable overall size. Our results indicate that spontaneous local opening-up of the DNA duplex could facilitate sharp bending of short DNA strands even in the absence of DNA binding proteins. We also find that the occurrence of two closely spaced melting bubbles will generally be favored when a large energetic barrier must be overcome in forming the desired bent DNA structure

The Mechanisms of Yu Ping Feng San in Tracking the Cisplatin-Resistance by Regulating ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter and Glutathione S-Transferase in Lung Cancer Cells.

Cisplatin is one of the first line anti-cancer drugs prescribed for treatment of solid tumors; however, the chemotherapeutic drug resistance is still a major obstacle of cisplatin in treating cancers. Yu Ping Feng San (YPFS), a well-known ancient Chinese herbal combination formula consisting of Astragali Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma and Saposhnikoviae Radix, is prescribed as a herbal decoction to treat immune disorders in clinic. To understand the fast-onset action of YPFS as an anti-cancer drug to fight against the drug resistance of cisplatin, we provided detailed analyses of intracellular cisplatin accumulation, cell viability, and expressions and activities of ATP-binding cassette transporters and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in YPFS-treated lung cancer cell lines. In cultured A549 or its cisplatin-resistance A549/DDP cells, application of YPFS increased accumulation of intracellular cisplatin, resulting in lower cell viability. In parallel, the activities and expressions of ATP-binding cassette transporters and GSTs were down-regulated in the presence of YPFS. The expression of p65 subunit of NF-κB complex was reduced by treating the cultures with YPFS, leading to a high ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, i.e. increasing the rate of cell death. Prim-O-glucosylcimifugin, one of the abundant ingredients in YPFS, modulated the activity of GSTs, and then elevated cisplatin accumulation, resulting in increased cell apoptosis. The present result supports the notion of YPFS in reversing drug resistance of cisplatin in lung cancer cells by elevating of intracellular cisplatin, and the underlying mechanism may be down regulating the activities and expressions of ATP-binding cassette transporters and GSTs

T4 DNA ligase is more than an effective trap of cyclized dsDNA

    Get PDF
T4 DNA ligase is used in standard cyclization assays to trap double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) in low-probability, cyclic or highly bent conformations. The cyclization probability, deduced from the relative yield of cyclized product, can be used in conjunction with statistical mechanical models to extract the bending stiffness of dsDNA. By inserting the base analog 2-aminopurine (2-AP) at designated positions in 89 bp and 94 bp dsDNA fragments, we find that T4 DNA ligase can have a previously unknown effect. Specifically, we observe that addition of T4 ligase to dsDNA in proportions comparable to what is used in the cyclization assay leads to a significant increase in fluorescence from 2-AP. This effect is believed to originate from stabilization of local base-pair opening by formation of transient DNA-ligase complexes. Non-specific binding of T4 ligase to dsDNA is also confirmed using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) experiments, which reveal a systematic reduction of dsDNA diffusivity in the presence of ligase. ATP competes with regular DNA for non-covalent binding to the T4 ligase and is found to significantly reduce DNA-ligase complexation. For short dsDNA fragments, however, the population of DNA-ligase complexes at typical ATP concentrations used in DNA cyclization studies is determined to be large enough to dominate the cyclization reaction

    The processes ψ(2S)→γπ+π−\psi(2S)\to \gamma \pi^+ \pi^-, γK+K−\gamma K^+ K^- and γppˉ\gamma p \bar{p} have been studied using a sample of 3.7×1063.7 \times 10^6 produced ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays. We determine the total width of the χc0\chi_{c0} to be Γχc0tot=14.3±2.0±3.0\Gamma^{tot}_{\chi_{c0}} = 14.3\pm 2.0\pm 3.0 MeV. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction B(χc0→ppˉ)=(16.3±4.4±5.4)×10−5B(\chi_{c0} \to p \bar{p}) = (16.3 \pm 4.4 \pm 5.4)\times 10^{-5}, where the first error is statistical and the second one systematic. Branching fractions of χc0,2→π+π−\chi_{c0,2} \to \pi^+ \pi^- and K+K−K^+ K^- are also reported.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 3 figures, 2 table

Based on (4.48±0.03)×108(4.48 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{8} ψ(3686)\psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, five hch_c hadronic decays are searched for via process ψ(3686)→π0hc\psi(3686) \to \pi^0 h_c. Three of them, hc→ppˉπ+π−h_c \to p \bar{p} \pi^+ \pi^-, π+π−π0\pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0, and 2(π+π−)π02(\pi^+ \pi^-) \pi^0 are observed for the first time, with statistical significances of 7.4σ\sigma, 4.9σ4.9\sigma, and 9.1σ\sigma, and branching fractions of (2.89±0.32±0.55)×10−3(2.89\pm0.32\pm0.55)\times10^{-3}, (1.60±0.40±0.32)×10−3(1.60\pm0.40\pm0.32)\times10^{-3}, and (7.44±0.94±1.56)×10−3(7.44\pm0.94\pm1.56)\times10^{-3}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal is observed for the other two decay modes, and the corresponding upper limits of the branching fractions are determined to be B(hc→3(π+π−)π0)<8.7×10−3B(h_c \to 3(\pi^+ \pi^-) \pi^0)<8.7\times10^{-3} and B(hc→K+K−π+π−)<5.8×10−4B(h_c \to K^+ K^- \pi^+ \pi^-)<5.8\times10^{-4} at 90% confidence level.Comment: 17 pages, 16 figure
