The Off to a Good Start: Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Development of Youth Grades 5–8 (OTAGS) curriculum provides students with a foundation for future sex education. The curriculum consists of three modules covering puberty, healthful relationships, and HIV and sexually transmitted infections. University of Illinois Extension educators taught OTAGS at 15 schools in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Evaluation results were favorable, indicating knowledge improvement. OTAGS complements other Extension programs, lays a foundation for future sex education, and provides others in Extension with the opportunity to play a role in making timely and accurate sex education accessible to youths

Problematización de la responsabilidad social o colectiva

    Get PDF

The aim is to present approaches on social knowledge management from the perspective of the social responsibility of the University to propose strategies aimed at the promotion of sustainable local development. The social management of the knowledge (GSC) should be one of the central functions of the institutions of education (IE), because the attribute work with and on the knowledge is precisely the raison to be and what distinguishes them from other forms of social organization. The development of cognitive abilities, the search for novel approach problems, participation in the resolution of social problems, the development of collective forms of work and, in a Word, become agencies that manage knowledge responsibly is probably one of the ways that has been lost in the IE for internal and external reasons. In the first sense, dominated two options in dispute: the pursuit of knowledge in itself or knowledge subject to results. On the outside, between the subordination to a technical job market and contribution to innovations that meet probable social background. The above, recognizing that around knowledge of power for personal interest reasons and/or group, confrontations occur on political and economic affairs. But, in sum, these disputes in societies like ours - underdeveloped and lagging - in knowledge may be a veil to not move in directions that combine knowledge with problem solving through responsible for knowledge management forms

Effect of valproate on renal metabolism in the intact dog

Effect of valproate on renal metabolism in the intact dog. Valproate is an antiepileptic drug known to induce hyperammonemia in humans. This hyperammonemia might result from a reduced detoxification of ammonium in the liver and/or from an accelerated renal ammoniagenesis. Six dogs with normal acid-base equilibrium and eight dogs with chronic metabolic acidosis were infused with valproate directly into their left renal artery in order to obtain arterial concentrations around 3 to 4mM. The arterial ammonium concentration rose only in chronically acido tic dogs, whereas the lactate concentration and the lactate/pyruvate ratio increased in both groups. The urinary excretion of lactate and pyruvate increased markedly but the urinary excretion of other relevant metabolites remained minimal. Renal glutamine utilization and ammonium production were not changed by valproate administration in normal dogs but increased modestly in acidotic dogs. However, renal lactate utilization was drastically reduced and in fact, changed into a net production of lactate. Valproate strikingly reduced the renal cortical concentrations of glutamine, glutamate, alphaketoglutarate and citrate, and more modestly those of malate, oxaloacetate, aspartate, alanine and ATP. By contrast, the tissue lactate concentration and the lactate/pyruvate ratio were markedly increased. In experiments with brush border membrane vesicles, valproate inhibited the lactate transporter. These results suggest that high concentrations of valproate drastically inhibited the proximal reabsorption and the proximal and distal oxidation of lactate and pyruvate. Valproate probably became itself a significant energetic substrate for the kidney

Association between playing tactics and creating scoring opportunities in elite football. A case study in Spanish Football National Team

The aim of this study was to examine the association between playing tactics, situational variables and creating scoring opportunities according to the type of start-up possession in a case-study. All team possessions (n=857) developed by the Spanish Football national team during the World Cup 2010 were analysed and grouped into “strategic set-plays” (n=90), “recoveries” (n=451) and “restarts” (n=316). Fourteen categorical variables which describe offensive playing tactics, opponent situation as well as situational variables and their associations with creating scoring opportunities were examined using chi-square analysis and bivariate logistic regressions. Chi-square analysis showed that “strategic set-plays” were more effective to produce scoring opportunities (29.2%) than recoveries (15.4%) and restarts (8.9%) (P<0.001). Within the strategic set-plays, no differences were found between corners kicks and free kicks to produce scoring opportunities. In recoveries, the variables “field starting zone” (P=0.001), “initial penetration” (P<0.001), “initial opponent number” (P=0.004), “initial opponent position” (P=0.014), “initial penetration zone” (P<0.001), and “type of progression” (P=0.049), and for restarts “pass number” (P=0.049) and “duration” (P=0.006) were associated with the likelihood of creating scoring opportunities. More scoring opportunities were created in the second half (P=0.022). The type of start-up possession and the match half may modify the playing tactics developed during the offensive process and influence the creation of scoring opportunities in Football

Obesity is critically associated with the development of insulin resistance and related cardiovascular and kidney diseases. Several strategies for weight loss have been developed but most of them exhibit a post-intervention rebound effect. Here, we aimed to design combined weight-loss strategies of caloric restriction, physical exercise, and administration of a CB1 receptor blocker to inhibit food intake that also accomplish the objectives of lost-weight maintenance and improvement of cardiovascular and renal function. Diet-induced obesity (DIO) was generated in Sprague Dawley rats for 12 weeks to test the effects of single or combined strategies (i.e. caloric restriction, mixed training protocol, and/or administration of appetite suppressant) on caloric intake, body weight, cardiovascular and renal functionality resulting from a weight-loss intervention period of 3 weeks followed by 6 weeks of weight maintenance. Consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) caused a significant increase in body weight (5th week of the experimental period) and led to the development of insulin resistance, cardiovascular, and renal alterations. The different interventions tested, resulted in a significant body weight loss and improved glucose metabolism, aerobic capacity, electrocardiographic parameters, vascular expression of adhesion molecules and inflammatory mediators, and renal functionality, reaching values similar to the control normocaloric group or even improving them. Successful maintenance of lost weight was achieved along a 6-week maintenance period in addition to adequate health status. In conclusion, the weight-loss and maintenance intervention strategies tested were efficient at reversing the obesity-related alterations in body weight, glucose metabolism, aerobic capacity, cardiovascular and renal functionality. The beneficial action was very consistent for caloric restriction and physical exercise, whereas administration of a CB1 receptor blocker complemented the effects of the prior interventions in some parameters like body weight or aerobic capacity, and showed specific actions in renal status, increasing glomerular filtration rate and diuresis. Overall, the novelty of our study relies on the easy implementation of combined strategies for effective weight management that resulted in significant health benefits.Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and UniversitiesEuropean Commission DEP2014-58296-R RTC-2017-6540-1 RTI2018-100934-B-I00European Commissio
