Despite the wealth of research on multilingualism, which assumes that the structure of phonic materials of multilingual and monolingual subjects are dissimilar, the processes of perception and apprehension of a foreign language and have not deserved much attention. The analysis of the perceptive behavior of multilingual and monolingual subjects - with an aim to detect similarities - points to a perceptive idiosyncrasy of the multilingual subject, and has shown deviant behaviors in relation to the perceptive behavior of monolingual subjects. New elements have emerged for the characterization of a new typology of multilingualism, no longer based on sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic characterizations of the subjects but on their perceptual performance, which can be objectified for each of the languages in contact

Second foreign languages and employability in the Catalonia of the SXXI

    Get PDF
Introduction: Despite considering the English language, Lingua Franca par excellence, Catalan companies, due to their growing economic internationalization, demand more and more professionals with skills in foreign languages associated with skills and attitudes linked to employability. These characteristics reflect the needs of the labour market, which implies a strong synergy between universities and companies in order to provide future graduates with the most suitable skills for a quality labour market insertion. Methods: Our analysis is based on the study of two different profiles of graduates, on the one hand, students of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and on the other hand, students of the Degree in Tourism of Euroaula-University of Girona, two areas in which knowledge of second languages is unavoidable for their subsequent incorporation into the labour market. We will focus on second foreign languages (French, German, Italian, etc.) which are part of the growing needs of the Catalan business sector. Conclusions: The graduates who can accredit linguistic knowledge in two foreign languages, associated with transversal skills linked to employability, are future professionals highly coveted by the world of work. From this perspective, the world of education must try to reconsider the teaching of foreign languages that is more in line with the needs of knowledge, know-how and know how to be.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Influence of Di erent Sieving Methods on Estimation of Sand Size Parameters

    Get PDF
Sieving is one of the most used operational methods to determine sand size parameters which are essential to analyze coastal dynamics. However, the influence of hand versus mechanical shaking methods has not yet been studied. Herein, samples were taken from inside the hopper of a trailing suction dredger and sieved by hand with sieves of 10 and 20 cm diameters on board the dredger. Afterwards, these same samples were sieved with a mechanical shaker in the laboratory on land. The results showed di erences for the main size parameters D50, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. Amongst the main results, it should be noted that the highest values for D50 and kurtosis were given by the small sieves method. On the other hand, the lowest values were given by the mechanical shaker method in the laboratory. Furthermore, standard deviation and skewness did not seem to be a ected by the sieving method which means that all the grainsize distribution was shifted but the shape remained unchanged. The few samples that do not follow these patterns have a higher percentage of shells. Finally and definitely, the small sieves should be rejected as a sieving method aboard

New design parameters for biparabolic beach profiles (SW Cadiz, Spain)

    Get PDF
165 profiles of seventy-one beaches along the Gulf of Cadiz (SW, Spain) were studied to improve the formulation of the beach profile in tidal seas. Maritime climate, degree of energy exposure and size of the sand grains were taken into account to study the two sections of the biparabolic profile. The objective of the study was the determination of more accurate formulations of the design parameters for the equilibrium profile that involves tidal seas. These formulations were modelled and validated based on existing profiles to quantify the error existing between the real profile and the modelling. This comparative analysis was extended by considering the formulations proposed by other authors. The best results were obtained with the proposal presented herein

Audiovisual resources as a useful tool to improve the teaching of coastal engineering (marine science bsc degree)

Numerous graduates from American Universities apply for their degree homologation for the Marine Science certificate in Spain. The Spanish Ministry of Education supports this as long as they can pass an exam based on several subjects including Coastal Engineering at the University of Cadiz. The subject of Coastal Engineering is currently being taught in the third year of the BSc degree. This is a very specific subject and unfortunately there is no adequate bibliography that allows for the breadth of knowledge needed to pass the final exam. In addition, it may be difficult for foreign students to properly prepare the subject because they cannot attend the lessons at the campus. Therefore, an innovative project was proposed to create videos where lessons are explained. These files were uploaded to the Virtual Classroom. In this way, students of the Marine Science BSc degree were also encouraged to use these audiovisual resources because not all of the enrolled students were able to attend the classes as they had clashing schedules. On the other hand, some students have an Erasmus grant and their knowledge of Spanish has not reached the required level in terms of assimilating all the given explanations. Enabling these audiovisual resources would be very useful for their studies, not only from a technical but also from a linguistic point of view. The exams from the last few years were solved and explained in documents that were also uploaded later to the Virtual Classroom in order to facilitate the study of the subject. This represented a valid and helpful alternative way in which students could prepare for their final exam. During the months of September and October a grantee was hired to assist the preparation of all the teaching material. From November to January, several PowerPoint files were prepared (including formulations, summaries and practical solved exercises) and oral explanations were implemented. The performance of the audiovisual resources was facilitated by the free software Active Presenter (http://atomisystems.com/activepresenter/). The students completed a satisfaction survey about the quality and usefulness of the audiovisual lectures, in order to assess the levels of interest and success that were achieved. According to the results obtained, these audiovisual resources can be considered to be in the public domain and hence can be uploaded to the Cadiz University repository. In order to disseminate the results of the project’s usefulness in academia, lectures explaining its methodology, results and conclusions used will be given, not only in the same faculty but also at this International Conference to further its applications to other subjects

Virtual resources for the improvement of teaching in the course of Port and Coastal Engineering (dregree in Civil Engineering)

    Get PDF
Port and Coastal Engineering is a subject included in the third year of the degree in Civil Engineering (Civil Constructions and Hydrology specialty) taught at the Polytechnic School of Algeciras. As this is a subject with a very specific syllabus, there is no textbook (or even appropriate references) that contemplates all the related topics of the whole course. Moreover, there are many students who, for different reasons (repeaters, Erasmus, labour obligations, ...), cannot attend the regular classes. This lack of attendance has been leading to another problem: this kind of students have been leaving the subject for several years. In addition, understanding of the basic concepts becomes even more complicated for Erasmus students enrolled in the subject because of the language barrier. In order to solve this problem, a project of teaching innovation has been launched which consists of the creation of a set of evaluable tasks for the different topics addressed to be performed by the students. In this way, the students are motivated to keep up-to-date the course contents. A comparison of the last year results with those of the preceding five years is provided. Finally, an analysis of the significance of the improvement is also presented

Closing the gap: the link between social capital and microfinance services

The social capital has strengthened the solidarity funds when the legal mechanisms and institutions for monitoring and assistance would not have been present. The aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of social capital on productivity and performance of the Mexican solidarity funds. For this it is obtained an estimator indirectly associated with inequality, through which it follows that if the social capital rises 1% the loans number increases by 0.2877% and the savings number increases by 0.4598%, and for each additional producer that activate his social capital with his partners they will be generated increases in loans recoveries amounting to 597.41 pesos. In this sense, a greater investment in social capital will recover a larger amount of borrowed funds and will increase savings and loans to poor producer
