Static mechanical properties of 30 x 11.5 - 14.5, type 8 aircraft tires of bias-ply and radial-belted design
An investigation was conducted to determine the static mechanical properties of a 30 x 11.5 to 14.5, Type 8, bias-ply and radial-belted aircraft tire. The properties measured were the spring rate and damping characteristics of each tire from vertical- and lateral-loading hysteresis loops. Mass moment of inertia tests were also conducted. The results of the study are presented along with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of tire
Millimeter and far-IR study of the IRDC SDC 341.232-0.268
We analyze the molecular gas and dust associated with the infrared dark cloud SDC 341.232-0.268 in order to investigate the characteristics and parameters of the gas, determine the evolutionary status of four embedded EGO candidates and establish possible infall or outflow gas motions. We based our study on 12CO(2-1), 13 CO(2-1), and C18O(2-1) data obtained with the APEX telescope, molecular data of high density tracers from the MALT90 survey and IR images from Spitzer, Herschel and ATLASGAL. The study reveals two clumps at -44 km/s towards the IRDC, with densities of > 10^4 cm-3 , typical of IRDCs, while high density tracers show H2 densities > 10^5 . FIR images reveals the presence of cold dust linked to the molecular clumps and EGOs. A comparison of spectra of the optically thin and optically thick molecular lines towards the EGOs suggests the existence of infall and outflow motions.Fil: Vazzano, María Mercedes. Smooth muscle cells orchestrate the endothelial cell response to flow and injury
available in PMC 2011 May 25Background— Local modulation of vascular mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling reduces smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation after endovascular interventions but may be associated with endothelial cell (EC) toxicity. The trilaminate vascular architecture juxtaposes ECs and SMCs to enable complex paracrine coregulation but shields SMCs from flow. We hypothesized that flow differentially affects mTOR signaling in ECs and SMCs and that SMCs regulate mTOR in ECs.
Methods and Results— SMCs and/or ECs were exposed to coronary artery flow in a perfusion bioreactor. We demonstrated by flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and immunoblotting that EC expression of phospho-S6 ribosomal protein (p-S6RP), a downstream target of mTOR, was doubled by flow. Conversely, S6RP in SMCs was growth factor but not flow responsive, and SMCs eliminated the flow sensitivity of ECs. Temsirolimus, a sirolimus analog, eliminated the effect of growth factor on SMCs and of flow on ECs, reducing p-S6RP below basal levels and inhibiting endothelial recovery. EC p-S6RP expression in stented porcine arteries confirmed our in vitro findings: Phosphorylation was greatest in ECs farthest from intact SMCs in metal stented arteries and altogether absent after sirolimus stent elution.
Conclusions— The mTOR pathway is activated in ECs in response to luminal flow. SMCs inhibit this flow-induced stimulation of endothelial mTOR pathway. Thus, we now define a novel external stimulus regulating phosphorylation of S6RP and another level of EC-SMC crosstalk. GU Boo: A New 0.6 Msun Detached Eclipsing Binary
We have found a new low-mass, double-lined, detached eclipsing binary, GU
Boo, among a sample of new variables from the ROTSE-I database. The binary has
an orbital period of 0.488728 +/- 0.000002 days, and estimated apparent
magnitudes Vrotse = 13.7 and I = 11.8. Our analysis of the light and radial
velocity curves of the system yields individual masses and radii of M1= 0.610
+/- 0.007 Msun, M2 = 0.599 +/- 0.006 Msun, R1= 0.623 +/- 0.016 Rsun, R2= 0.620
+/- 0.020 Rsun. The stars in GU Boo are therefore very similar to the
components of the eclipsing binary YY Gem. For this study we have adopted a
mean effective temperature for the binary of Teff = 3870 +/- 130 K. Based on
its space velocities we suggest that GU Boo is a main sequence binary, possibly
with an age of several Gyr. The metallicity of the binary is not well
constrained at this point but we speculate that it should not be very different
from solar. We have compared the physical parameters of GU Boo with current
low-mass stellar models, where we accounted for uncertainties in age and
metallicity by considering a wide range of values for those parameters. Our
comparisons reveal that all the models underestimate the radii of the
components of GU Boo by at least 10-15%. This result is in agreement with the

Low Mass Companions for Five Solar-Type Stars from the Magellan Planet Search Program
We report low mass companions orbiting five Solar-type stars that have
emerged from the Magellan precision Doppler velocity survey, with minimum
(Msini) masses ranging from 1.2 to 25 Mjup. These nearby target stars range
from mildly metal-poor to metal-rich, and appear to have low chromospheric
activity. The companions to the brightest two of these stars have previously
been reported from the CORALIE survey. Four of these companions (HD 48265-b, HD
143361-b, HD 28185-b, HD 111232-b) are low-mass Jupiter-like planets in
eccentric intermediate and long-period orbits. On the other hand, the companion
to HD 43848 appears to be a long period brown dwarf in a very eccentric orbit.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ, 26 pages, 10 figures, 7 table
Diagnostic difficulties in congenital tumor with positive antibodies for skeletal muscle. Lipofibromatosis case report
Neonatos con Tumores congénitos de partes blandasIntroduction: Congenital soft tissue tumors are uncommon; proper diagnosis calls for histopathological experience and ancillary techniques based upon immunohistochemial, cytogenetic,
and molecular biology. Following excision, intermediately aggressive soft tumors tend to local
recurrence, which significantly impacts prognosis; some cases occur close to malignity; subsequently, diagnostic implications are enormous for the patient.
Case report: A 26-day old neonate with a posterior left thigh mass entered hospital. Initial
biopsy analysis could not rule out either striated muscle origin or malignancy; resection and classification of surgical piece followed. Pursuant to resection, using immunohistochemistry panel,
tumor analysis and classification took place.
Conclusion: Soft tumor diagnosis is a complex process, even more so for newborns. Infrequent
occurrence requires that examiners have ample histopathological experience in the handling of
ancillary techniques. Furthermore, as in lipofibromatosis, determining the presence of trapped
vs. malignant tissue hinders proper classification, which, in turn, has profound implications for
the patient. MagAO Imaging of Long-period Objects (MILO). I. A Benchmark M Dwarf Companion Exciting a Massive Planet around the Sun-like Star HD 7449
We present high-contrast Magellan adaptive optics (MagAO) images of HD 7449,
a Sun-like star with one planet and a long-term radial velocity (RV) trend. We
unambiguously detect the source of the long-term trend from 0.6-2.15 \microns
~at a separation of \about 0\fasec 54. We use the object's colors and spectral
energy distribution to show that it is most likely an M4-M5 dwarf (mass \about
0.1-0.2 \msun) at the same distance as the primary and is therefore likely
bound. We also present new RVs measured with the Magellan/MIKE and PFS
spectrometers and compile these with archival data from CORALIE and HARPS. We
use a new Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure to constrain both the mass ( \msun ~at 99 confidence) and semimajor axis (\about 18 AU) of the M
dwarf companion (HD 7449B). We also refine the parameters of the known massive
planet (HD 7449Ab), finding that its minimum mass is
\mj, its semimajor axis is AU, and its eccentricity is
. We use N-body simulations to constrain the eccentricity
of HD 7449B to 0.5. The M dwarf may be inducing Kozai oscillations
on the planet, explaining its high eccentricity. If this is the case and its
orbit was initially circular, the mass of the planet would need to be
1.5 \mj. This demonstrates that strong constraints on known planets
can be made using direct observations of otherwise undetectable long-period
companions.Comment: Corrected planet mass error (7.8 Mj --> 1.09 Mj, in agreement with
previous studies
The nuclear receptor LXRα controls the functional specialization of splenic macrophages.
Macrophages are professional phagocytic cells that orchestrate innate immune responses and have considerable phenotypic diversity at different anatomical locations. However, the mechanisms that control the heterogeneity of tissue macrophages are not well characterized. Here we found that the nuclear receptor LXRα was essential for the differentiation of macrophages in the marginal zone (MZ) of the spleen. LXR-deficient mice were defective in the generation of MZ and metallophilic macrophages, which resulted in abnormal responses to blood-borne antigens. Myeloid-specific expression of LXRα or adoptive transfer of wild-type monocytes restored the MZ microenvironment in LXRα-deficient mice. Our results demonstrate that signaling via LXRα in myeloid cells is crucial for the generation of splenic MZ macrophages and identify an unprecedented role for a nuclear receptor in the generation of specialized macrophage subsets
