The impact of globalisation on Irish theatre since the early 1990s has been considerable. A study of four recent Irish plays, all produced by "regional" theatre companies, suggests that contemporary Irish theatre is dominated by two impulses, both of which arise from globalisation but which tend towards opposite outcomes : theatre companies are attempting to respond to globalisation by producing theatre with a regionalized perspective, works that may nonetheless travel freely across national and international bounders. This approach to "theatre-making" has led to a number of clashes between theatre companies and their local audiences: Patrick Lonergan describes these clashes, as well as certain attempts to resolve them

This article explores the theme of crisis in three plays by Enda Walsh: Penelope (2010), The New Electric Ballroom (2008) and The Walworth Farce (2006). By showing how Penelope directly addressed the collapse of the Celtic Tiger, the article identifies major themes that can help to understand Walsh’s work more generally. This is demonstrated by a discussion of the other two plays, which are placed in the context of events in Ireland before and after the collapse of its Celtic Tiger in 2008.

Preimplantation embryo programming: transcription, epigenetics, and culture environment.

    Get PDF
Preimplantation development directs the formation of an implantation- or attachment-competent embryo so that metabolic interactions with the uterus can occur, pregnancy can be initiated, and fetal development can be sustained. The preimplantation embryo exhibits a form of autonomous development fueled by products provided by the oocyte and also from activation of the embryo\u27s genome. Despite this autonomy, the preimplantation embryo is highly influenced by factors in the external environment and in extreme situations, such as those presented by embryo culture or nuclear transfer, the ability of the embryo to adapt to the changing environmental conditions or chromatin to become reprogrammed can exceed its own adaptive capacity, resulting in aberrant embryonic development. Nuclear transfer or embryo culture-induced influences not only affect implantation and establishment of pregnancy but also can extend to fetal and postnatal development and affect susceptibility to disease in later life. It is therefore critical to define the basic program controlling preimplantation development, and also to utilize nuclear transfer and embryo culture models so that we may design healthier environments for preimplantation embryos to thrive in and also minimize the potential for negative consequences during pregnancy and post-gestational life. In addition, it is necessary to couple gene expression analysis with the investigation of gene function so that effects on gene expression can be fully understood. The purpose of this short review is to highlight our knowledge of the mechanisms controlling preimplantation development and report how those mechanisms may be influenced by nuclear transfer and embryo culture

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 161-162).This project outlines a design for a fac̦ade product that can potentially be used to simplify both the construction and operation of an apartment in an urban setting. Additionally, this fagade module has been conceptualized as a way to improve energy performance, making it the energy hub of the home, and housing the majority of the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment. The design makes use of activity recognition to aid with this energy performance improvement, and adapts the conditions in the living spaces to real-time activities being carried out in the home. Energy analyses, in conjunction with real-life modeling and deployment tests, were used to verify the concept. In addition, a graphical user interface was built, allowing the home occupant to adjust the system settings of the automated energy-management technologies, as well as enabling the system to give feedback to the user on how certain decisions affect the performance of the home.by Ronan Lonergan.S.M

    Physics and scientific realism

In this thesis I argue for a realist interpretation of physics. I respond to claims to the contrary by submitting rebuttals of some of the more serious objections, and by formulating and defending counter-claims. It would be too ambitious to try to argue here for realism throughout physics, so I restrict my constructive efforts to the classical domain. Attempted rebuttals of the anti-realist case, however, involve intrusions into the quantum arena. I take issue in Part 1 with Nancy Cartwright. She argues in How the Laws o f Physics Lie that: (i) the fundamental laws of physics are false; (ii) causal explanation can ensure truth, in which case the theoretical entities invoked are real; and (iii) current theories of explanation are misconceived. To support (i) she analyses cases drawn from both classical and modern physics, and my response is to show in detail how, in these examples, I believe she is mistaken. Whilst I agree with (ii), I argue that there is incoherence in simultaneously holding (ii) with (i). As for (iii), I defend the D-N model of explanation and point to the inadequacies of Cartwright s simulacrum model. In Representing and Intervening Ian Hacking argues for the reality of (theoretical) entities that can be manipulated in interactions with other things. However, he is agnostic on realism about theories, because he believes that incompatible theories can equally well cover a given range of phenomena. The case to which he points to instantiate the view is Hertz s treatment of mechanics in which Hacking claims to find three equally good theories, with the overt threat of inconsistency among them. In Part 2 I argue that there is but one theory of mechanics and that Hertz s project was to investigate three different ways of axiomatising it. Only one of the three ways (as conceived by Hertz) survives. To support their position, anti-realists commonly seize on the doctrine, supposedly due to Pierre Duhem, that a given range of phenomena can be accommodated by different, mutually incompatible, theories. Part 3 examines the basis for Duhem's view and establishes that he had a quasi-realist attitude to theories. The originator of the doctrine, it transpires, was not Duhem, but Henri Poincare. I explain how the subsequent course of physics invalidated the grounds which misled these two philosophers into adopting it. Part 4 examines Bas van Fraassen's claim to reduce to absurdity the demand for explanation that he thinks is exemplified in J.J.C. Smart's classic cosmic coincidence' argument for realism. I show that Smart s argument comprehends two different sorts of cosmic coincidence, and that van Fraassen addresses only the less formidable of these. In so doing, van Fraassen's strategy is to assert that Smart's argument relies on Reichenbach s principle of the common cause, and to offer an abstract schema (deriving from the EPR correlation experiments) which, he claims, refutes Reichenbach's principle. I set all of this in context and argue that the schema fails to bear the load that van Fraassen places on it, and that Smart s argument stands

Regional Model Nesting Within GFS Daily Forecasts Over West Africa

The study uses the RM3, the regional climate model at the Center for Climate Systems Research of Columbia University and the NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies (CCSR/GISS). The paper evaluates 30 48-hour RM3 weather forecasts over West Africa during September 2006 made on a 0.5 grid nested within 1 Global Forecast System (GFS) global forecasts. September 2006 was the Special Observing Period #3 of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA). Archived GFS initial conditions and lateral boundary conditions for the simulations from the US National Weather Service, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration were interpolated four times daily. Results for precipitation forecasts are validated against Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) satellite estimates and data from the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS), which includes rain gauge measurements, and forecasts of circulation are compared to reanalysis 2. Performance statistics for the precipitation forecasts include bias, root-mean-square errors and spatial correlation coefficients. The nested regional model forecasts are compared to GFS forecasts to gauge whether nesting provides additional realistic information. They are also compared to RM3 simulations driven by reanalysis 2, representing high potential skill forecasts, to gauge the sensitivity of results to lateral boundary conditions. Nested RM3/GFS forecasts generate excessive moisture advection toward West Africa, which in turn causes prodigious amounts of model precipitation. This problem is corrected by empirical adjustments in the preparation of lateral boundary conditions and initial conditions. The resulting modified simulations improve on the GFS precipitation forecasts, achieving time-space correlations with TRMM of 0.77 on the first day and 0.63 on the second day. One realtime RM3/GFS precipitation forecast made at and posted by the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD) in Niamey, Niger is shown

New Luxury Ideologies: A Shift From Building Cultural to Social Capital

    Get PDF
This paper helps academics and practitioners understand the shift from traditional to new ideologies in luxury fashion. By tracing the workings of traditional luxury ideologies and unpacking the impact of digital and social media, the article explains why social capital has become a primary resource for brands and a core constituent of new luxury ideologies. It also unveils three traits of brands building social capital which might be of prime influence, and illustrates them in three case studies with luxury fashion brands Gucci, Noah and Pyer Moss. Academics can build on the findings with further theoretical development. We also raise important implications for marketing practitioners, who can rely on such for building stronger luxury brands

European Joint Doctorates: myth or reality?

Today, there is a lack of consensus for the full implementation of common programmes recognizing the “highest” level of higher education in Europe. Even though cotuttelle agreements are widely used for international joint supervision of PhD theses, these are merely bilateral and individual case-based agreements, far away from a real joint degree under a legal framework that establishes the programme. This article aims to describe the experience of the authors in the management and coordination of a joint doctoral programme between 2015 and 2019 and the results obtained from the interrogation of official websites about the reality in Europe concerning such programmes. Our conclusion is that, still in the 21st century, there is a huge gap to be overcome before the existence of Joint International/European Doctorates can be considered an everyday reality. Although various attempts have been made in the last 20 years, there is still a long way to go for Higher Education institutions to integrate all aspects of such programmes, and to make them something more and different than an additional Diploma Supplement. In the authors´ opinion, major efforts must be made by the administrative bodies, although the drive of the academic staff is crucial for success.  [ES] Today, there is a lack of consensus for the full implementation of common programmes recognizing the “highest” level of higher education in Europe.
