Using a damper amplification factor to increase energy dissipation in structures

AbstractFluid dampers are an important tool for dissipating unwanted vibrations in a range of engineering structures. This paper examines the effects of amplifying the displacements transferred to a non-linear damper, to increase the effectiveness of the damper in a range of situations commonly encountered in civil engineering structures. These include, (i) the ability to “fine tune” the required damping for a particular size damper, (ii) the ability to have a set of the same size dampers, but with different amplification factors to achieve a specific damping task, and (iii) to increase the sensitivity of the damper to small movements which effectively extends the range over which the damper works. Through numerical simulations and experimental tests conducted on a non-linear damper, we quantify the potential advantages of adding an amplification factor and the range of parameters where the benefit to this device is significant. The example of a two-storey structure is used as a test case and real-time dynamic substructuring tests are used to assess the complete system performance using a range of different amplification factors. The results show that the structural performance is most improved for frequencies close to resonance and that the amplification factor has an effective limit that for the case considered in this study is of approximately 3. Supporting brace sizing in structures with added linear viscous fluid dampers: A filter design solution

Viscous fluid dampers have proved to be effective in suppressing unwanted vibrations in a range of engineering structures. When dampers are fitted in a structure, a brace is typically used to attach them to the main structure. The stiffness of this brace can significantly alter the effectiveness of the damper, and in structures with multiple dampers, this can be a complex scenario to model. In this paper, we demonstrate that the effects of the brace compliance on the damper performance can be modelled by way of a first-order filter. We use this result to formulate a procedure that calculates the stiffness required by the supporting brace to provide a specified effectiveness of the damping action. The proposed procedure assumes that viscous dampers have been sized in a previous design step based on any optimal methodology in which, as is usually the case, the presence of supporting braces and their dynamic effects were neglected. Firstly considering a one degree-of-freedom system, we show that the proposed method ensures a desired level of damper efficiency for all frequencies within a selected bandwidth. Then the analysis is extended to the case of multi-degree-of-freedom systems to show that the design criteria can be applied in a straightforward and successful manner to more complex structures

Análisis de errores en una composición escrita

RESUMEN: Los aprendices comenten errores tanto en la comprensión como en la producción. Algunos teóricos han identificado que la dificultad para clasificar las diferentes fallas en comprensión se debe al conocimiento inadecuado de una característica sintáctica particular. Por tanto, el error puede definirse como una desviación de las normas del idioma objetivo. En esta experiencia profesional se analizará una composición escrita sobre “Mi vida en Colombia” con base en la investigación a través de la elicitación clínica (EC). Esta se centra en cómo el informante produce datos de cualquier tipo, por ejemplo, a través de una entrevista general o solicitándole al aprendiz una composición escrita. Se analizarán algunos errores producidos por un aprendiz de una lengua extranjera en su proceso de adquisición, identificando sus posibles causas. Finalmente, se clasifican cuatro tipos de errores: omisión, adición, desinformación y yuxtaposición sintáctica.ABSTRATC: Learners make errors in both comprehension and production. Some theoreticians have pointed out the difficulty of assigning the cause of failures in comprehension to an inadequate knowledge of a particular syntactic feature of a misunderstood utterance. Indeed, an error can be defined as a deviation from the norms of the target language. In this investigation, based on personal and professional experience, a written composition entitled “My Life in Colombia” will be analyzed based on clinical elicitation (CE) research. CE involves getting the informant to produce data of any sort, for example, by means of a general interview or by asking the learner to write a composition. Some errors produced by a foreign language learner in her acquisition process will be analyzed, identifying the possible sources of these errors. Finally, four kinds of errors are classified: omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering

El presente trabajo de investigación tiene por objeto proponer una serie de lineamientos generales para que sean tenidos en cuenta por la interventoría en la etapa previa a la construcción de proyectos de mayor cuantía en el sector público en Colombia. Además de formular una justificación para incluir al interventor en la etapa precontractual de este tipo de proyectos, por medio de ejemplos relacionados en los que se identifique la necesidad. Adicionalmente se hace mucho énfasis en la etapa posterior al diseño, al proponer el desarrollo de formatos técnicos de carácter general que ayuden a obtener un mejor control y seguimiento en las diferentes actividades del proceso constructivo de proyectos tan complejos como los de mayor cuantía.This research work is to propose a set of general guidelines to be considered by the auditing in the prior stage to the projects construction of greater amount in the public sector at Colombia. Resolución de problemas de cripto-aritmética en primaria

El tema a tratar hace referencia a resultados parciales de una investigación sobre resolución de problemas que se realizó con 38 alumnos de la escuela pública, Héroe de Nacozari, de Saltillo, Coahuila México, en el turno matutino, los niños del estudio tenían edades entre 9 y 11 años. Como estaban empezando el quinto de primaria, los problemas se diseñaron con contenidos temáticos de cuarto grado. En esta investigación se encontraron varias estrategias heurísticas y varias creencias que usan los alumnos al resolver problemas. En este artículo únicamente se centra la atención en problemas de cripto-aritmética. Al analizar los resultados de encontró que una de las estrategias heurísticas utilizadas mayormente por los alumnos es el ensayo-error, a veces de forma sistemática. Dentro del sistema de creencias hubo dos prototipos que llamaron la atención, los alumnos creen que para solucionar los problemas que involucran letras, la solución está asociada a un orden alfabético, o a calificaciones obtenidas en la escuela

POTENTIAL DIVIDENDS AND ACTUAL CASH FLOW. A REGIONAL LATIN AMERICAN ANALYSIS

We examine the value market assigns to components of the cash flow to equity including potential dividends. We study non financial publicly traded firms from five Latin American countries. The model includes four variables: market value of equity, dividends paid, change in equity investment and change in liquid assets (potential dividends) and are regressed with actual equity value as dependent variable. Tests applied give robust results. The main conclusions: Market assigns less than one dollar to a future dollar for any of the variables studied. Potential dividends destroy value. A dollar invested in liquid assets has a negative Net Present Value and it is not zero NPV investments. We confirm the agency costs of keeping undistributed cash flows.Cash flow to equity, potential dividends, equity value.

Nietzsche: de la decadencia en el trabajo a la ascendencia en el capitalismo

Objective: to demonstrate elements to defend the idea that work in the capitalist context is, from Nietzsche’s view, decadent. However, despite being decadent, ascending life is possible within it. To this effect, this article explains what Nietzsche understood by decadence, its causes, some of its consequences and, in particular, the reason why work in the capitalist context is a further result of the decadence of culture. It also explains how ascending life is possible, despite being immersed in a decadent context. For this purpose, the roles of the business owner and his/her employees are analyzed. Methodology: this study proceeds methodologically through the philosophical analysis of concepts. Thus, the genealogical method of Nietzsche is applied, with which the restrictive vision of ethics is confronted, according to which it seems as if it were based on previous, absolute, not demonstrable and dogmatic assumptions. Nietzsche's thought, then, constitutes not only a theoretical reference, but also a methodological model to address this issue. Results: Nietzsche's philosophy has implications on capitalism and contemporary business life. Conclusions: ascending life within the capitalist context is very difficult to reach and only a few exceptional beings, who tend to the Übermensch, achieve it.Objetivo: evidenciar elementos para defender la idea de que el trabajo en el contexto capitalista es, desde Nietzsche, decadente, pero que, a pesar de ser decadente, es posible la vida ascendente en él. Para ello, este artículo explica qué entendía Nietzsche por decadencia, cuál fue la causa de esta decadencia, algunas de sus consecuencias y, en especial, por qué el trabajo en el contexto capitalista es una consecuencia más de la decadencia de la cultura. También explica cómo, a pesar de estar inmersos en un contexto decadente, es posible la vida ascendente. Para esto, se analiza el papel del dueño de empresa y de los empleados de ella. Metodología: este estudio procede metodológicamente mediante el análisis filosófico de conceptos. Así, se aplica el método genealógico de Nietzsche, con el que se enfrenta la visión restrictiva de la ética, según la cual pareciera como si ésta partiese de supuestos previos, absolutos, no demostrables y dogmáticos. El pensamiento de Nietzsche, entonces, constituye no sólo un referente teórico, sino también metodológico para abordar este tema. Resultados: la filosofía de Nietzsche tiene implicaciones sobre el capitalismo y la vida empresarial contemporánea. Conclusiones: la vida ascendente dentro del contexto capitalista es muy difícil de alcanzar y solo la logran unos pocos seres excepcionales, que tienden al Übermensch
