    An introduction to interactive sonification

    Get PDF
The research field of sonification, a subset of the topic of auditory display, has developed rapidly in recent decades. It brings together interests from the areas of data mining, exploratory data analysis, human–computer interfaces, and computer music. Sonification presents information by using sound (particularly nonspeech), so that the user of an auditory display obtains a deeper understanding of the data or processes under investigation by listening

Transfer-Plausibility of Binaural Rendering with Different Real-World References

For the evaluation of virtual acoustics for mixed realities, we distinguish between the paradigms "authenticity", "plausibility" and "transfer-plausibility". In the case of authenticity, discrimination tasks between real sound sources and virtual renderings presented over headphones are performed, whereas in case of a plausibility experiment, listeners need to rely only on their expectation of a sound when listening to the rendering, without the presence of an explicit reference. In the case of transfer-plausibility, however, different real sources are active alongside virtual sources, potentially in different spatial locations, leading to a certain degree of comparability. This resembles the case of forthcoming augmented reality systems. Here, we show an experiment, which assesses the transfer-plausibility of rendered speech sources in a variable acoustic environment. We demonstrate the influence of the similarity between real and virtual source material and their spatial location on the transfer-plausibility of measurement-based headphone rendering.Non peer reviewe

    Real-time Soundprism

[EN] This paper presents a parallel real-time sound source separation system for decomposing an audio signal captured with a single microphone in so many audio signals as the number of instruments that are really playing. This approach is usually known as Soundprism. The application scenario of the system is for a concert hall in which users, instead of listening to the mixed audio, want to receive the audio of just an instrument, focusing on a particular performance. The challenge is even greater since we are interested in a real-time system on handheld devices, i.e., devices characterized by both low power consumption and mobility. The results presented show that it is possible to obtain real-time results in the tested scenarios using an ARM processor aided by a GPU, when this one is present. This work has been supported by the "Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad" of Spain and FEDER under projects TEC2015-67387-C4-{1,2,3}-R.Muñoz-Montoro, AJ.; Ranilla, J.; Vera-Candeas, P.; Combarro, EF.; Alonso-Jordá, P. Real-time dynamic image-source implementation for auralisation

    Get PDF
This paper describes a software package for auralisation in inter- active virtual reality environments. Its purpose is to reproduce, in real time, the 3D soundfield within a virtual room where listener and sound sources can be moved freely. Output sound is presented binaurally using headphones. Auralisation is based on geometric acoustic models combined with head-related transfer functions (HRTFs): the direct sound and reflections from each source are computed dynamically by the image-source method. Directional cues are obtained by filtering these incoming sounds by the HRTFs corresponding to their propagation directions relative to the listener, computed on the basis of the information provided by a head-tracking device. Two interactive real-time applications were developed to demonstrate the operation of this software package. Both provide a visual representation of listener (position and head orientation) and sources (including image sources). One focusses on the auralisation-visualisation synchrony and the other on the dynamic calculation of reflection paths. Computational performance results of the auralisation system are presented
