Success or failure of future information and communication services in general and mobile communications in particular is greatly dependent on the level of personalisations they can offer. While the provision of anytime, anywhere, anyhow services has been the focus of wireless telecommunications in recent years, personalisation however has gained more and more attention as the unique selling point of mobile devices. Smart phones should be intelligent enough to match user’s unique needs and preferences to provide a truly personalised service tailored for the individual user. In the first part of this thesis, the importance and role of personalisation in future mobile networks is studied. This is followed, by an agent based futuristic user scenario that addresses the provision of rich data services independent of location. Scenario analysis identifies the requirements and challenges to be solved for the realisation of a personalised service. An architecture based on IP Multimedia Subsystem is proposed for mobility and to provide service continuity whilst roaming between two different access standards. Another aspect of personalisation, which is user preference modelling, is investigated in the context of service selection in a multi 3rd party service provider environment. A model is proposed for the automatic acquisition of user preferences to assist in service selection decision-making. User preferences are modelled based on a two-level Bayesian Metanetwork. Personal agents incorporating the proposed model provide answers to preference related queries such as cost, QoS and service provider reputation. This allows users to have their preferences considered automatically

Phylogenetic analysis of the SAP30 family of transcriptional regulators reveals functional divergence in the domain that binds the nuclear matrix

Background: Deacetylation of histones plays a fundamental role in gene silencing, and this is mediated by a corepressor complex containing Sin3 as an essential scaffold protein. In this report we examine the evolution of two proteins in this complex, the Sin3-associated proteins SAP30L and SAP30, by using an archive of protein sequences from 62 species. Results: Our analysis indicates that in tetrapods SAP30L is more similar than SAP30 to the ancestral protein, and the two copies in this group originated by gene duplication which occurred after the divergence of Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii about 450 million years ago (Mya). The phylogenetic analysis and biochemical experiments suggest that SAP30 has diverged functionally from the ancestral SAP30L by accumulating mutations that have caused attenuation of one of the original functions, association with the nuclear matrix. This function is mediated by a nuclear matrix association sequence, which consists of a conserved motif in the C-terminus and the adjacent nucleolar localization signal (NoLS).Conclusion: These results add further insight into the evolution and function of proteins of the SAP30 family, which share many characteristic with nuclear scaffolding proteins that are intimately involved in regulation of gene expression. Furthermore, SAP30L seems essential to eukaryotic biology, as it is found in animals, plants, fungi, as well as some taxa of unicellular eukaryotes

Opinnäytetyössä on kuitenkin laadullisen tutkimuksen piirteitä, koska työssä on käytetty haastattelua tutkimusmenetelmänä. The objective of this study was to examine, how the EU sanctions and Russia’s retali-atory sanctions impact to forwarding, transportation and warehousing in Finnish companies. The first part of, this study discusses, the relations between Finland and Russia before these sanctions. After this the study examines the sanctions important logistical operations relevant to this study. The situation after these sanctions has been set has been clarified with the help of news and other studies. This study was not commissioned by anyone and it has been conducted almost completely theoretically. It has some features of qualitative research because an interview was one of the research methods used. The purpose of this interview was to find out what kind of effects the EU sanctions and Russia’s retaliatory sanctions have on forwarding business in Finland. The results of this study indicate that the sanctions have an impact on all three logistical operations examined. The effects, however, will be limited and are likely to influence only particular Finnish companies. The impact will be the most significant in companies which offer value added services for Finnish transit traffic and in companies operating in the food industry

SSA\u27s Development Delay: Three Essays on The Monetary System, The International Trade and Property Rights

This dissertation focuses on the issues of economic performances in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It includes three essays on the monetary system, the international trade and property rights.;The first chapter discusses the inflation dynamics across different exchange rate regime groups in SSA. In particular, a comparative analysis is conducted between the CFA franc currency union countries and the non-members of SSA to see whether the CFA franc countries exhibit lower inflation in the short and the long run compared to other countries. This chapter also assesses the money supply growth, output growth and money velocity growth as the sources of inflation in the region. The empirical results support the inflation- growth trade-off in the CFA zones. While the CFA countries experience relatively lower inflation in the short and the long run, they suffer from a pronounced output loss relative to all other non-CFA countries in general and relative to the pegged non-CFA countries in particular.;The second chapter analyses the implications of the Heckscher-Ohlin (HO) theory of factor abundance and the increasing return to scale (IRS) theory of product differentiation in the bilateral trade within SSA. It shows that the similarity of the factors of production proportions and the lack of product differentiation reduce the extent of trade between African countries. Trade policies that are aimed to promote trade within the region (i.e., FTA, custom unions) are likely to fail because SSA countries produce similar homogeneous products. The key factor for economic success from international trade for the SSA region relies on how to manufacture products in different varieties and how to export their comparative advantage goods outside the region.;The last chapter identifies the effects of property rights on the total factor productivity (TFP) across different property rights levels and income groups in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). I subdivide SSA countries by their property rights score and by their income levels. Then, I estimate a model in which TFP depends on human capital and institutional qualities. The results mainly show that private property rights have a positive and statistically significant effect on the TFP in SSA. This result indicates that private property rights are important determinants in the process of economic development. If well-defined and enforced by state laws, private property rights will contribute to growth in SSA

The value effects of M&A transactions for U.S. SPACs : An examination of the short-term value effects in 2014–2021

The purpose of this thesis is to study the short-term value effects of merger and acquisition (M&A) announcements and completions on U.S. special purpose acquisition companies. The goal is to find if any abnormal returns are realized and whether the announcements create or destroy shareholder value. Shareholder value is defined as the price fluctuations of the pub-licly traded stock of the SPAC. The hypotheses are constructed based on earlier empirical research and the study sample in this thesis consists of M&A announcements and comple-tions between January 2014 and June 2021. The stock price data is obtained from Refinitiv database, and the empirical research is con-ducted by using the market adjusted event study methodology. Russell 2000 index is chosen for the benchmark index, following earlier research. Event windows for the examination are [-10,10], [-5,5], and [-1,1]. To statistically test the results, a t-test is also run. The first hypoth-esis states that M&A plan announcements create shareholder value and the second hypoth-esis states that M&A completion announcements destroy shareholder value. The results of this thesis find that M&A plan announcements do create shareholder value, by cumulative abnormal returns of 8,71%, 9,48%, and 8,14% from the longest event window to the shortest, respectively. These results are statistically significant at 1% significance level and thus, the first hypothesis is accepted. The results also show that M&A completion announcements destroy shareholder value by cumulative abnormal returns of -5,39%, -5,92%, and -0,57% from the longest event window to the shortest. The middle value is statistically significant at 10% significance level, and the first is very close. Therefore, taking into consideration both earlier literature and the value distribution between companies and time, the second hy-pothesis is also accepted. Based on the findings of this thesis, M&A transactions cause abnormal returns for SPAC shareholders even today, and to maximize and secure one’s returns, it should be taken into consideration when making investment decisions

In recent years the used of personalization in service provisioning applications has been very popular. However, effective personalization cannot be achieved without accurate user profiles. A number of classification algorithms have been used to classify user related information to create accurate user profiles. In this study four different classification algorithms which are; naive Bayesian (NB), Bayesian Networks (BN), lazy learning of Bayesian rules (LBR) and instance-based learner (IB1) are compared using a set of user profile data. According to our simulation results NB and IB1 classifiers have the highest classification accuracy with the lowest error rate

Nuorten tyttöjen viiltelyn tausta, syyt ja hoito : Kirjallisuuskatsaus suomalaisista julkaisuista

Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää, minkälaisia tutkimuksia itseään viiltelevistä nuorista tytöistä on suomenkielellä tehty. Tavoitteena oli saada vas-taukset kolmeen tutkimuskysymykseen: 1) Minkälaisia tekijöitä on nuoren viilte-lyn taustalla? 2) Miksi nuori viiltelee? The purpose of this thesis was to find out what kind of studies there are in Finn-ish concerning self-cutting adolescents, especially girls. The aim was to get an-swers to our research questions. The research questions were 1) What are the factors behind cutting? 2) Why do adolescents self-cut? 3) How do you treat an adolescent who self-cuts? The research material was gathered from “Arto”, “Aleksi” and “Linda” databases through the “Nelli” portal. The criteria for accepting material were that it had to be in Finnish and published in the 21st century. The material consisted of 6 re-search articles, some of which were literature reviews and some research based articles. There was also one Master's Thesis. According to the material, self-cutting is a common phenomenon among ado-lescents but research material concerning self-cutting is scarce. The most common reason behind self-cutting is mental health problems. Other reasons include traumatic childhood experiences, parents' divorce and inability to handle feelings in a less harmful way. Treating self-cutting adolescents is challenging and at the moment there are no current care guidelines concerning self-cutting. In conclusion, self-cutting is a sensitive subject which should be discussed in workplaces. Additional training on the subject is needed to positively change the attitudes toward self-cutting adolescents. This might bring about better treat-ment results. We recommend making a guide for parents and nurses working among adolescents. The guide could have information on why adolescents self-cut and how to face the issue and help them

    Interactional reciprocity in human–dog interaction

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 John Benjamins Publishing Company. This chapter explores the potential existence of interactional reciprocity in human–dog interactions by analyzing experimental data on situations where dog owners fail to produce reciprocally modified actions for two minutes. We found that their dogs soon realized the strangeness of the situation. While they pursued missing feedback with touch, gaze and vocalizations, they also addressed other humans and requested their attention. Therefore, the dogs oriented to the lack of reciprocity and attempted to repair it. We demonstrate that interactional reciprocity in human–dog interactions can be breached, thus proving its existence. Moreover, we show that it also returned when the experiment ended. The findings are compared with mother–infant experiments where evidence of interactional reciprocity has also been found.Peer reviewe
