    Optical phonon features of triclinic montebrasite : dispersion analysis and non-polar Raman modes.

    Polarized infrared and Raman spectra of triclinic LiAl(PO4)(OH) [montebrasite] single crystal were recorded for appropriate optical configurations. Dispersion analysis was applied on the infrared reflectivity spectra taken at low incidence angle (11 ) to determine the oscillator parameters and the dipole directions of the polar phonons. In particular, all the 27 polar phonons, predicted by group theory for triclinic P1 structure,were determined. The obtained dielectric tensor parameters have been checked by comparison between predicted and measured infrared spectra at higher incidence angle (34 ). The azimuth and co-elevation angles obtained from the dispersion analysis showed that the response of several polar phonons is close to that of an orthorhombic system. Polarized Raman spectra obtained in several scattering geometries allowed us to obtain well-defined 24 non-polar modes, also in perfect agreement with group theory. The selection rule between Raman and infrared phonons was respected, confirming the centrosymmetric structure and ruling out any relevant influence of defects. The relatively narrow phonon bands are compatible with a highly ordered structure with fully occupied atomic sites

    SLAM algorithm applied to robotics assistance for navigation in unknown environments

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The combination of robotic tools with assistance technology determines a slightly explored area of applications and advantages for disability or elder people in their daily tasks. Autonomous motorized wheelchair navigation inside an environment, behaviour based control of orthopaedic arms or user's preference learning from a friendly interface are some examples of this new field. In this paper, a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm is implemented to allow the environmental learning by a mobile robot while its navigation is governed by electromyographic signals. The entire system is part autonomous and part user-decision dependent (semi-autonomous). The environmental learning executed by the SLAM algorithm and the low level behaviour-based reactions of the mobile robot are robotic autonomous tasks, whereas the mobile robot navigation inside an environment is commanded by a Muscle-Computer Interface (MCI).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this paper, a sequential Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) feature-based SLAM algorithm is implemented. The features correspond to lines and corners -concave and convex- of the environment. From the SLAM architecture, a global metric map of the environment is derived. The electromyographic signals that command the robot's movements can be adapted to the patient's disabilities. For mobile robot navigation purposes, five commands were obtained from the MCI: turn to the left, turn to the right, stop, start and exit. A kinematic controller to control the mobile robot was implemented. A low level behavior strategy was also implemented to avoid robot's collisions with the environment and moving agents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The entire system was tested in a population of seven volunteers: three elder, two below-elbow amputees and two young normally limbed patients. The experiments were performed within a closed low dynamic environment. Subjects took an average time of 35 minutes to navigate the environment and to learn how to use the MCI. The SLAM results have shown a consistent reconstruction of the environment. The obtained map was stored inside the Muscle-Computer Interface.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The integration of a highly demanding processing algorithm (SLAM) with a MCI and the communication between both in real time have shown to be consistent and successful. The metric map generated by the mobile robot would allow possible future autonomous navigation without direct control of the user, whose function could be relegated to choose robot destinations. Also, the mobile robot shares the same kinematic model of a motorized wheelchair. This advantage can be exploited for wheelchair autonomous navigation.</p

    Biotransformation of Metal-Rich Effluents and Potential Recycle Applications

    In this chapter, it was introduced about the metallurgic effluents, and their potential to be converted into some feasible coproducts for industries. Some possibilities to introduce circular economy in the context of metallurgic effluents, and in the same way, some techniques to promote bioremediation using microorganisms and products from them were also described. Reported studies, as well as some perspectives to use metal-rich effluents in agriculture and soil quality improvement, were also shown. Copper effluents were kept as the main candidate for sustainable use, as a potentially interesting material for circular economy approaches

    Micromechanical Properties of Injection-Molded Starch–Wood Particle Composites

    The micromechanical properties of injection molded starch–wood particle composites were investigated as a function of particle content and humidity conditions. The composite materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. The microhardness of the composites was shown to increase notably with the concentration of the wood particles. In addition,creep behavior under the indenter and temperature dependence were evaluated in terms of the independent contribution of the starch matrix and the wood microparticles to the hardness value. The influence of drying time on the density and weight uptake of the injection-molded composites was highlighted. The results revealed the role of the mechanism of water evaporation, showing that the dependence of water uptake and temperature was greater for the starch–wood composites than for the pure starch sample. Experiments performed during the drying process at 70°C indicated that the wood in the starch composites did not prevent water loss from the samples.Peer reviewe

    Synthesis and characterisation of the vibrational and electrical properties of antiferromagnetic 6L-Ba2CoTeO6 ceramics

    Optimal processing conditions for fabrication of dense single-phase 6L-Ba2CoTeO6 ceramics via the solid-state reaction method were determined. These ceramics possess a room-temperature crystal structure described by the centrosymmetric P[3 with combining macron]m1 space group. Polarized Raman spectroscopy enabled the observation of all the 25 predicted Raman modes and assignment of their symmetries. On cooling, BCTO ceramics exhibit two antiferromagnetic transitions at 3 K and 12.5 K, in broad agreement with a recent single-crystal study [P. Chanlert, N. Kurita, H. Tanaka, D. Goto, A. Matsuo and K. Kindo, Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter Mater. Phys., 2016, 93, 094420]. Low temperature Fourier-transform infrared reflectivity analyses suggest the antiferromagnetic phase transitions to be driven by small distortions of the CoO6 octahedra, lowering locally their C3v symmetry. This causes splitting of the associated vibrational modes, but without a long-range structural change. AC impedance spectroscopy revealed BCTO ceramics to be leaky insulators with an activation energy for conduction of ∼0.15−0.25 eV, which suggests electron hopping between mixed oxidation states of Co

    Asthma in an Urban Population in Portugal: A prevalence study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The prevalence and incidence of asthma are believed to be increasing but research on the true incidence, prevalence and mortality from asthma has met methodological obstacles since it has been difficult to define and diagnose asthma in epidemiological terms. New and widely accepted diagnostic criteria for asthma present opportunities for progress in this field. Studies conducted in Portugal have estimated the disease prevalence between 3% and 15%. Available epidemiological data present a significant variability due to methodological obstacles.</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>To estimate the true prevalence of asthma by gender and age groups in the population of the area covered by one urban Health Centre in Portugal.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>An observational study was conducted between February and July 2009 at the Horizonte Family Health Unit in Matosinhos, Portugal. A random sample of 590 patients, stratified by age and gender was obtained from the practice database of registered patients. Data was collected using a patient questionnaire based on respiratory symptoms and the physician's best knowledge of the patient's asthma status. The prevalence of asthma was calculated by age and gender.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Data were obtained from 576 patients (97.6% response rate). The mean age for patients with asthma was 27.0 years (95% CI: 20.95 to 33.16). This was lower than the mean age for non-asthmatics but the difference was not statistically significant. Asthma was diagnosed in 59 persons giving a prevalence of 10.24% (95% CI: 8.16 to 12.32). There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of asthma by gender.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The prevalence of asthma found in the present study was higher than that found in some studies, though lower than that found in other studies. Further studies in other regions of Portugal are required to confirm these findings.</p
