    Determination of the fundamental absorption and optical bandgap of dielectric thin films from single optical transmittance measurements

    In this work, we propose a method to retrieve the thickness and optical constants of dielectric thin films from single optical transmittance measurements. The method is based on the envelope method and requires a simple dispersion model for the real part of the refractive index with few fitting parameters, while the absorption coefficient can be determined without the aid of a dispersion model. The wavelength dependent optical constants can be obtained even from spectra that exhibit few interference fringes. We have tested the method with simulated and real transmittance data from thin films in the spectral range covering the fundamental absorption. In order to assess the method s reliability to retrieve the optical constants and optical bandgap, a comparison is performed with the method by Chambouleyron, known as the Pointwise Unconstrained Minimization Approach, and a fit using the Cody Lorentz dispersion model. We evaluate the methods capability to retrieve the fundamental absorption and optical bandgap, and their compromise with film thickness accuracy.     Indirect excitation and luminescence activation of Tb doped indium tin oxide and its impact on the host s optical and electrical properties

    The effect of adding terbium to indium tin oxide ITO thin films on the electrical, optical and light emission properties was investigated. The films were prepared by radio frequency dual magnetron sputtering, maintaining a high optical transmittance in the ultraviolet and visible spectral regions, and a low electrical resistivity ranging from 5 10 amp; 8722;3 amp; 937; cm to 0.3 amp; 937; cm. Terbium related luminescence is achieved after annealing at 470 amp; 9702;C in air at atmospheric pressure. Electrical resistivity and optical transmittance were measured after each annealing step to evaluate the compromise between the achieved light emission intensity, electrical and optical properties. Additionally, temperature dependence of Tb related luminescence quenching was assessed by temperature dependent photoluminescence measurements, from 83 to 533 K, under non resonant excitation. Thermal quenching activation energies suggest an effective energy transfer mechanism from the ITO host to the rare earth RE ions. This indirect excitation mechanism was modeled using a spherical potential well and a tight binding one band approximation approaches, describing a short range charge trapping process and subsequent formation of bound excitons to RE ion cluster

    RHBDD2 overexpression promotes a chemoresistant and invasive phenotype to rectal cancer tumors via modulating UPR and focal adhesion genes

    The current standard of care for locally advanced rectal cancer (RC) is neoadjuvant radio-chemotherapy (NRC) with 5-fluorouracil (5Fu) as the main drug, followed by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. While a group of patients will achieve a pathological complete response, a significant percentage will not respond to the treatment. The Unfolding Protein Response (UPR) pathway is generally activated in tumors and results in resistance to radio-chemotherapy. We previously showed that RHBDD2 gene is overexpressed in the advanced stages of colorectal cancer (CRC) and that it could modulate the UPR pathway. Moreover, RHBDD2 expression is induced by 5Fu. In this study, we demonstrate that the overexpression of RHBDD2 in CACO2 cell line confers resistance to 5Fu, favors cell migration, adhesion and proliferation and has a profound impact on the expression of both, the UPR genes BiP, PERK and CHOP, and on the cell adhesion genes FAK and PXN. We also determined that RHBDD2 binds to BiP protein, the master UPR regulator. Finally, we confirmed that a high expression of RHBDD2 in RC tumors after NRC treatment is associated with the development of local or distant metastases. The collected evidence positions RHBDD2 as a promising prognostic biomarker to predict the response to neoadjuvant therapy in patients with RC.Fil: Palma, Sabina. Universidad Nacional de La Plata.     Diabetes Mellitus Among Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients From 4 Tuberculosis-endemic Countries: The TANDEM Study

    Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases active tuberculosis (TB) risk and worsens TB outcomes, jeopardizing TB control especially in TB-endemic countries with rising DM prevalence rates. We assessed DM status and clinical correlates in TB patients across settings in Indonesia, Peru, Romania, and South Africa. Methods Age-adjusted DM prevalence was estimated using laboratory glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) or fasting plasma glucose in TB patients. Detailed and standardized sociodemographic, anthropometric, and clinical measurements were made. Characteristics of TB patients with or without DM were compared using multilevel mixed-effect regression models with robust standard errors. Results Of 2185 TB patients (median age 36.6 years, 61.2% male, 3.8% human immunodeficiency virus–infected), 12.5% (267/2128) had DM, one third of whom were newly diagnosed. Age-standardized DM prevalence ranged from 10.9% (South Africa) to 19.7% (Indonesia). Median HbA1c in TB–DM patients ranged from 7.4% (Romania) to 11.3% (Indonesia). Compared to those without DM, TB–DM patients were older and had a higher body mass index (BMI) (P value < .05). Compared to those with newly diagnosed DM, TB patients with diagnosed DM had higher BMI and HbA1c, less severe TB, and more frequent comorbidities, DM complications, and hypertension (P value < .05). Conclusions We show that DM prevalence and clinical characteristics of TB–DM vary across settings. Diabetes is primarily known but untreated, hyperglycemia is often severe, and many patients with TB–DM have significant cardiovascular disease risk and severe TB. This underlines the need to improve strategies for better clinical management of combined TB and DM
