Genetic mapping of QTL for maize leaf width combining RIL and IF2 populations

    Get PDF
Leaf width is an important component of plant architecture that affects light capture during photosynthesis and wind circulation under dense planting conditions. To improve understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in leaf width at different positions, a comprehensive evaluation using the RIL (Recombinant Inbred Line) and IF2 (Immortalized F2) populations and a subsequent meta-analysis were performed. Forty-seven QTL associated with leaf width at different positions below the tassel were detected. The individual effects of QTL explained 3.5% to 17.0% of the observed phenotypic variation, and ten QTL explained over 10%. The initial QTL were integrated into eight mQTL (meta-QTL) through a meta-analysis. Our results suggested that leaf widths at different positions may be affected by several of the same mQTL and may also be regulated by many different mQTL. These results provide useful information for breeding high density tolerant inbred lines and hybrid cultivars, as well as for using marker-assisted selection for important mQTL

Experimental and Numerical Study of the Interfacial Shear Strength in Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin Composite under Thermal Loads

This study examined the influence mechanism of temperature on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy resin (EP) matrices under various thermal loads using experimental and numerical simulation methods. To evaluate the change in IFSS as a function of the increase in temperature, a microbond test was performed under controlled temperature environment from 23°C to 150°C. The experimental results showed that IFSS values of CF/EP reduce significantly when the temperature reaches near glass transition temperature. To interpret the effect of thermal loads on IFSS, a thermal-mechanical coupling finite element model was used to simulate the process of fiber pull-out from EP. The results revealed that temperature dependence of IFSS is linked to modulus of the matrix as well as to the coefficients of thermal expansion of the fiber and matrix

寒冷域と温暖域ではウイルスの遺伝子組成が異なる --巨大ウイルスの環境適応--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2023-10-13.Despite being perennially frigid, polar oceans form an ecosystem hosting high and unique biodiversity. Various organisms show different adaptive strategies in this habitat, but how viruses adapt to this environment is largely unknown. Viruses of phyla Nucleocytoviricota and Mirusviricota are groups of eukaryote-infecting large and giant DNA viruses with genomes encoding a variety of functions. Here, by leveraging the Global Ocean Eukaryotic Viral database, we investigate the biogeography and functional repertoire of these viruses at a global scale. We first confirm the existence of an ecological barrier that clearly separates polar and nonpolar viral communities, and then demonstrate that temperature drives dramatic changes in the virus–host network at the polar–nonpolar boundary. Ancestral niche reconstruction suggests that adaptation of these viruses to polar conditions has occurred repeatedly over the course of evolution, with polar-adapted viruses in the modern ocean being scattered across their phylogeny. Numerous viral genes are specifically associated with polar adaptation, although most of their homologues are not identified as polar-adaptive genes in eukaryotes. These results suggest that giant viruses adapt to cold environments by changing their functional repertoire, and this viral evolutionary strategy is distinct from the polar adaptation strategy of their hosts

    MLPerf Inference Benchmark

Machine-learning (ML) hardware and software system demand is burgeoning. Driven by ML applications, the number of different ML inference systems has exploded. Over 100 organizations are building ML inference chips, and the systems that incorporate existing models span at least three orders of magnitude in power consumption and five orders of magnitude in performance; they range from embedded devices to data-center solutions. Fueling the hardware are a dozen or more software frameworks and libraries. The myriad combinations of ML hardware and ML software make assessing ML-system performance in an architecture-neutral, representative, and reproducible manner challenging. There is a clear need for industry-wide standard ML benchmarking and evaluation criteria. MLPerf Inference answers that call. In this paper, we present our benchmarking method for evaluating ML inference systems. Driven by more than 30 organizations as well as more than 200 ML engineers and practitioners, MLPerf prescribes a set of rules and best practices to ensure comparability across systems with wildly differing architectures. The first call for submissions garnered more than 600 reproducible inference-performance measurements from 14 organizations, representing over 30 systems that showcase a wide range of capabilities. The submissions attest to the benchmark's flexibility and adaptability.Comment: ISCA 202

The Impact of Environmental Regulation on Green Energy Technology Innovation—Evidence from China

    No full text
Green energy technology innovation (GETI) is a crucial path to achieve sustainable development. However, few studies have examined the determinants of GETI, especially from the perspective of environmental regulation. To fill this gap, this study investigates the impact of environmental regulation on GETI using the panel data of 30 provinces in Mainland China from 2001 to 2018. We first measure GETI by the latest IPC codes and patent data, and then adopt a dynamic spatial Durbin model (DSDM) to examine the relationship between environmental regulation and GETI. The main conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) There is a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between environmental regulation and GETI; (2) heterogeneity analysis shows that the inverted U-shaped correlation not only exists between environmental regulations and different types of GETI, but also exists between environmental regulations and GETI in different regions. Moreover, the results also show that the spatial spillover effect and path-dependent effect exist in all cases. The findings can provide reference for policymakers to formulate more precise environmental policies. That is, environmental policies in a province should be formulated based on its position on the inverted U-shaped curve. More specifically, when it is on the left side of the inflection point, it is reasonable to strengthen environmental policies, and when it is on the right side of the inflection point, appropriate relaxation of environmental policies should be considered
