EAC Guidelines for the use of Geophysics in Archaeology: Questions to Ask and Points to Consider.
These guidelines provide an overview of the issues to
be considered when undertaking or commissioning
geophysical survey in archaeology. As every project diff ers
in its requirements (e.g. from fi nding sites to creating
detailed maps of individual structures) and variations in
geological and environmental conditions lead to diff erent
geophysical responses, there is no single ‘best’ survey
technique or methodology. Th is guide, in its European
approach, highlights the various questions to be asked
before a survey is undertaken. It does not provide recipebook
advice on how to do a geophysical survey or a tick
list of which technique is suitable under what conditions.
Experienced archaeological geophysicists should be
consulted to address the questions that are being posed.
Using geophysical techniques and methods inappropriately
will lead to disappointment and may, ultimately, result
in archaeologists not using them at all. “If all you have is
a hammer (or magnetometer), driving a screw becomes
impossible”.
Especially in the American literature the term ‘remote
sensing’ is oft en used to describe geophysical as well as
air and space based exploration of underground features
(e.g. Wiseman and El-Baz 2007). By contrast, and in line
with European traditions, a clear distinction is made
here between ground-based geophysical techniques and
remote sensing techniques. Th is is based on the imaging
principles underlying the respective technologies. Ground
based systems usually collect one spatially registered data
sample from each sensor location (e.g. a single reading
for each magnetometer, or a single trace from each GPR
antenna). Remote sensing techniques, by contrast, collect
spatially resolved data from a whole area of investigation
from each sensor location, using either the system’s optical
aperture (e.g. photography) or a scanning device (e.g. laser
sampling).
These guidelines are based on the experience of the authors
in archaeological geophysics and infl uenced by various
published sources

The Distance to Nova V959 Mon from VLA Imaging
Determining reliable distances to classical novae is a challenging but
crucial step in deriving their ejected masses and explosion energetics. Here we
combine radio expansion measurements from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array
with velocities derived from optical spectra to estimate an expansion parallax
for nova V959 Mon, the first nova discovered through its gamma-ray emission. We
spatially resolve the nova at frequencies of 4.5-36.5 GHz in nine different
imaging epochs. The first five epochs cover the expansion of the ejecta from
2012 October to 2013 January, while the final four epochs span 2014 February to
2014 May. These observations correspond to days 126 through 199 and days 615
through 703 after the first detection of the nova. The images clearly show a
non-spherical ejecta geometry. Utilizing ejecta velocities derived from 3D
modelling of optical spectroscopy, the radio expansion implies a distance
between 0.9 +/- 0.2 and 2.2 +/- 0.4 kpc, with a most probable distance of 1.4
+/- 0.4 kpc. This distance implies a gamma-ray luminosity much less than the
prototype gamma-ray-detected nova, V407 Cyg, possibly due to the lack of a red
giant companion in the V959 Mon system. V959 Mon also has a much lower
gamma-ray luminosity than other classical novae detected in gamma-rays to date,
indicating a range of at least a factor of 10 in the gamma-ray luminosities for

The Peculiar Multi-Wavelength Evolution Of V1535 Sco
We present multi-wavelength observations of the unusual nova V1535 Sco
throughout its outburst in 2015. Early radio observations were consistent with
synchrotron emission, and early X-ray observations revealed the presence of
high-energy (>1 keV) photons. These indicated that strong shocks were present
during the first ~2 weeks of the nova's evolution. The radio spectral energy
distribution was consistent with thermal emission from week 2 to week 6.
Starting in week 7, the radio emission again showed evidence of synchrotron
emission and there was an increase in X-ray emission, indicating a second shock
event. The optical spectra show evidence for at least two separate outflows,
with the faster outflow possibly having a bipolar morphology. The optical and
near infrared light curves and the X-ray measurements of the hydrogen column

Multisensory attention training for treatment of tinnitus

Rep. 5, 10802; doi: 10.1038/srep10802 (2015).Tinnitus is the conscious perception of sound with no physical sound source. Some models of tinnitus pathophysiology suggest that networks associated with attention, memory, distress and multisensory experience are involved in tinnitus perception. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a multisensory attention training paradigm which used audio, visual, and somatosensory stimulation would reduce tinnitus. Eighteen participants with predominantly unilateral chronic tinnitus were randomized between two groups receiving 20 daily sessions of either integration (attempting to reduce salience to tinnitus by binding with multisensory stimuli) or attention diversion (multisensory stimuli opposite side to tinnitus) training. The training resulted in small but statistically significant reductions in Tinnitus Functional Index and Tinnitus Severity Numeric Scale scores and improved attentional abilities. No statistically significant improvements in tinnitus were found between the training groups. This study demonstrated that a short period of multisensory attention training reduced unilateral tinnitus, but directing attention toward or away from the tinnitus side did not differentiate this effect.This work was supported by a grant from Links Research and Grants Corporation to G.D.S
Evaluation of methods for oligonucleotide array data via quantitative real-time PCR
BACKGROUND: There are currently many different methods for processing and summarizing probe-level data from Affymetrix oligonucleotide arrays. It is of great interest to validate these methods and identify those that are most effective. There is no single best way to do this validation, and a variety of approaches is needed. Moreover, gene expression data are collected to answer a variety of scientific questions, and the same method may not be best for all questions. Only a handful of validation studies have been done so far, most of which rely on spike-in datasets and focus on the question of detecting differential expression. Here we seek methods that excel at estimating relative expression. We evaluate methods by identifying those that give the strongest linear association between expression measurements by array and the "gold-standard" assay. Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) is generally considered the "gold-standard" assay for measuring gene expression by biologists and is often used to confirm findings from microarray data. Here we use qRT-PCR measurements to validate methods for the components of processing oligo array data: background adjustment, normalization, mismatch adjustment, and probeset summary. An advantage of our approach over spike-in studies is that methods are validated on a real dataset that was collected to address a scientific question. RESULTS: We initially identify three of six popular methods that consistently produced the best agreement between oligo array and RT-PCR data for medium- and high-intensity genes. The three methods are generally known as MAS5, gcRMA, and the dChip mismatch mode. For medium- and high-intensity genes, we identified use of data from mismatch probes (as in MAS5 and dChip mismatch) and a sequence-based method of background adjustment (as in gcRMA) as the most important factors in methods' performances. However, we found poor reliability for methods using mismatch probes for low-intensity genes, which is in agreement with previous studies. CONCLUSION: We advocate use of sequence-based background adjustment in lieu of mismatch adjustment to achieve the best results across the intensity spectrum. No method of normalization or probeset summary showed any consistent advantages
Cloud based machine learning approaches for leakage assessment and management in smart water networks
One-third of utilities around the globe report a loss of more than 40 percent of clean water due to leaks. By reducing the amount of water leaked, smart water networks can help reduce the money wasted on producing or purchasing water, and the related energy required to pump water and treat water for distribution. A UK demo site is presented focusing on leak management, integrating fixed flow and pressure instrumentation, advanced (smart) metering infrastructure and novel instruments (capable of high resolution monitoring). Example data analysis results for this site using the AURA-Alert anomaly detection system for Condition Monitoring are presented
Continental shelf off northern Chilean Patagonia: A potential risk zone for the onset of Alexandrium catenella toxic bloom?
Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) pose a severe socio-economic problem worldwide. The dinoflagellate species Alexandrium catenella produces potent neurotoxins called saxitoxins (STXs) and its blooms are associated with the human intoxication named Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). Knowing where and how these blooms originate is crucial to predict blooms. Most studies in the Chilean Patagonia, were focused on coastal areas, considering that blooms from the adjacent oceanic region are almost non-existent. Using a combination of field studies and modelling approaches, we first evaluated the role of the continental shelf off northern Chilean Patagonia as a source of A. catenella resting cysts, which may act as inoculum for their toxic coastal blooms. This area is characterized by a seasonal upwelling system with positive Ekman pumping during spring-summer, and by the presence of six major submarine canyons. We found out that these submarine canyons increase the vertical advection of bottom waters, and thus, significantly enhance the process of coastal upwelling. This is a previously unreported factor, among those involved in bloom initiation. This finding put this offshore area at high risk of resuspension of resting cysts of A. catenella.
