A luminescent molecular thermometer for long-term absolute temperature measurements at the nanoscale
El pdf del artículo es la versión post-print.A unique Eu3+/Tb3+ luminescent self-referencing nanothermometer allowing absolute measurements in the 10–350 K temperature range and sub-micrometer spatial resolution is reported (see Figure). It has up to 4.9%·K−1 temperature sensitivity and high photostability for long-term use. The combination of molecular thermometry, superparamagnetism and luminescence in a nanometric host matrix provides multifunctionality opening the way for new exciting applications. We acknowledge Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal), COMPETE and FEDER programs (PTDC/CTM/101324/2008) and Integrated Spanish-Portuguese Action PT2009–0131 for fi nancial support. Epidemiology of COVID-19 in the State of Sergipe/Brazil and Its Relationship with Social Indicators
A pandemic is capable of generating a great impact, not only from the point of view of health, but also socioeconomically. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that a new pandemic situation had arisen, due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, whose probable origin was zoonotic. The largest number of cases of this disease is concentrated in the United States of America (USA), India, and Brazil. The mortality rate is estimated at 3.4%, but regional differences may exist, and places with a high demographic density have become true epicentres and may be related to higher rates of transmission. In addition to the above, lower human development indexes (HDI) can be related to worse outcomes, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil since they are the least developed places. The Northeast region is the second-most-affected place in the number of COVID-19 cases in Brazil. An analytical observational study of an ecological type was carried out from April to October 2020 to assess the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in the state of Sergipe and specifically to analyse the incidence of cases and deaths resulting from COVID-19 in the different health regions of the state of Sergipe, in relation to the values of the HDI and demographic density. During the study period, 84,325 cases of COVID-19 were identified, in which 2205 resulted in death. In most of the regions studied, there was a positive association between the number of cases and deaths and the greater the demographic density, but there was no increase in the risk of becoming ill, nor of dying the lower the HDI. Large and crowded cities are places of greatest vulnerability to illness, due to their greater capacity of transmitting the virus; however, further studies are needed to identify other factors that are decisive in the outcomes of this new disease. This research received no external funding.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Our experience in stereoelectroencephalography and electrical stimulation in a public hospital
Purpose : Stereo- electroencephalography (SEEG) is a procedure performed for patients with intractable epilepsy in order to anatomically define the epileptogenic zone (EZ) and the possible related functional cortical areas. Electrical stimulation (ES) was developed to identify with precision cortical structures essential to language and motor function, and to trigger seizures. The aim of this study is to analyze electrical stimulation (ES) findings in our patient population. Method : We analyzed 30 patients with drug resistant epilepsy from our Video- EEG Unit, who underwent a SEEG as part of a surgical plan. Cognitive tasks performed during ES were: hand tapping, naming, automatic speech (counting), reading and verbal fluency. Results : From the 30 patients, we trigger theirs usual seizures in 25 (83.33%), 159 seizures: 25 (15.5%) were trigger with hippocampus stimulation, 15 (9.4%) amygdala, 30 (18.8%) other temporal areas, 50 (31.4%) frontal areas, 15 (9.4%) parieto- occipital areas, and 24 seizures (15%) were obtained with the stimulation of two continues areas. In 14 (46.6%) patients we stimulate eloquent brain regions: 8 (57%) language, 7 (50%) patients were evaluated the motor area, 2 (14.2%)sensitive areas, 4 (28.4%) visual and 5 (28.4%)auditory sensations. We define EZ in all of the patients, 8 (26.6%) mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, 2 (6.6%) other temporal areas, 13 (43.3%) frontal lobe epilepsy, 5 (21.7%) parieto- occipital epilepsy, 2 (6.6%) insular epilepsy. Conclusion : ES is a procedure that allowed us the accurate location of the EZ, the temporal space dynamics of the epiletogenic network and the functional mapping, to plan cortical resection without overlap and to improve postsurgical prognosis.Fil: Giagante, Brenda. Institutional assessment as an instrument of rationalization back to the school as a formal organisation
O papel central da avaliação, da avaliação institucional e dos
processos de garantia da qualidade de escolas e universidades
nas políticas educacionais é objeto de discussão, também
considerando a reforma do Estado.
The central role of evaluation, institutional assessment and quality
assurance processes of schools and universities in education policy
is object of discussion also considering the reform of the state. New
Public Management theories and managerialist perspectives are
considered some of the main sources of inspiration and legitimation
in the dominant context of an audit education. Preliminary
empirical data from external assessment of Portuguese primary and
secondary schools are introduced and interpreted according to the
main concepts and organizational representations of school found
in external reports. Examining some of the central organizational
images and meanings of school, school culture, autonomy, goals,
leadership and effectiveness included in the external reviews, the
author stresses the importance of formal, rational and bureaucratic
images of schools. Several new research questions are presented
for further inquiry based on the hypothesis of what it is called by
the author the process of hyperbureaucratization of educational
organizations. Some of the main dimensions of the concept of
bureaucracy as presented by Max Weber are revisited in close
relation with neo-scientific approaches of quality assurance and
taking in consideration the use of information and communication
technologies. Accordingly the author suggests that much more
importance must be given to formal and rational models of
interpreting educational organizations because assessment and
quality assurance procedures are contributing to the formalization
of schools and universities and to the intensification of their process
of rationalization, i. e., to the emergence of an analytic image of
schools as hyperbureaucracies.(undefined
Factors associated with thrombocytopenia in severe leptospirosis (Weil's disease)
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate factors associated with thrombocytopenia in a large cohort of patients with leptospirosis in an endemic area. METHODS: This retrospective study included 374 consecutive patients with leptospirosis who were admitted to tertiary hospitals in Fortaleza, Brazil. All patients had a diagnosis of severe leptospirosis (Weil's disease). Acute kidney injury was defined according to the RIFLE criteria. Thrombocytopenia was defined as a platelet coun
Doses cumulativas de iodo radioativo no tratamento do carcinoma diferenciado de tireoide: sabendo a hora de parar
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the efficacy of cumulative doses (CDs) of 131I-iodide therapy (RIT) in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The probability of progressive disease according to CDs was evaluated in patients < 45 years old and > 45 years old and correlated to tumor-node-metastasis (TNM), thyroglobulin values, histological types and variants, age, and zduration of the disease. RESULTS: At the end of a follow-up period of 69 ± 56 months, 85 out of 150 DTC patients submitted to fixed doses RIT had no evidence of disease, 47 had stable disease and 18 had progressive disease. Higher CDs were used in the more aggressive variants (p < 0.0001), higher TNM stages (p < 0.0001), and follicular carcinomas (p = 0.0034). Probability of disease progression was higher with CDs > 600 mCi in patients > 45 years old and with CDs > 800 mCi in patients < 45 years. CONCLUSION: Although some patients may still respond to high CDs, the impact of further RIT should be carefully evaluated and other treatment strategies may be warranted.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a eficácia de doses cumulativas (DCs) da terapia com iodeto-131I (RIT) no câncer diferenciado de tiroide (CDT).

Organic-Inorganic Eu3+/Tb3+ codoped hybrid films for temperature mapping in integrated circuits
The continuous decrease on the geometric size of electronic devices and integrated circuits generates higher local power densities and localized heating problems that cannot be characterized by conventional thermographic techniques. Here, a self-referencing intensity-based molecular thermometer involving a di-ureasil organic-inorganic hybrid thin film co-doped with Eu3+ and Tb3+ tris (3-diketonate) chelates is used to obtain the temperature map of a FR4 printed wiring board with spatio-temporal resolutions of 0.42 mu m/4.8 ms
Salivary exRNA biomarkers to detect gingivitis and monitor disease regression
AimThis study tests the hypothesis that salivary extracellular RNA (exRNA) biomarkers can be developed for gingivitis detection and monitoring disease regression.Materials and MethodsSalivary exRNA biomarker candidates were developed from a total of 100 gingivitis and nonâ gingivitis individuals using Affymetrix’s expression microarrays. The top 10 differentially expressed exRNAs were tested in a clinical cohort to determine whether the discovered salivary exRNA markers for gingivitis were associated with clinical gingivitis and disease regression. For this purpose, unstimulated saliva was collected from 30 randomly selected gingivitis subjects, the gingival and plaque indexes scores were taken at baseline, 3 and 6Â weeks and salivary exRNAs were assayed by means of reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction.ResultsEight salivary exRNA biomarkers developed for gingivitis were statistically significantly changed over time, consistent with disease regression. A panel of four salivary exRNAs [SPRR1A, lncâ TET3â 2:1, FAM25A, CRCT1] can detect gingivitis with a clinical performance of 0.91 area under the curve, with 71% sensitivity and 100% specificity.ConclusionsThe clinical values of the developed salivary exRNA biomarkers are associated with gingivitis regression. They offer strong potential to be advanced for definitive validation and clinical laboratory development test.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/144647/1/jcpe12930.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/144647/2/jcpe12930_am.pd
