Gastropods in subterranean shelters of the Czech Republic

    Get PDF
Gastropods in different types of cellars, nature caves, abandoned galleries, and military bunkers have been studied. The major part of localities is situated in W and SW Bohemia, findings from other parts of the Czech Republic are scarce. Species at different types of subterranean shelters are listed. Some interesting features, e.g., remarkable species, big specimens, depigmented populations, and hibernating snails, are mentioned

REDISCOVERY OF RHAGIO CHRYSOSTIGMA (LOEW, 1857) (DIPTERA: RHAGIONIDAE)

The rediscovery of Rhagio chrysostigma (Loew, 1857) after ca. 90 years, as well as the first record from Slovenia, are presented. The published data of this species are known only from northeastern Italy and are based on old records (Loew 1857, Schiner 1862, Szilády 1934)

Distribution and biology of two Balkan scorpionflies, Panorpa rufostigma and P. lacedaemonia (Mecoptera: Panorpidae)

Background and purpose: Two scorpionflies, Panorpa rufostigma Westwood, 1841 and P. lacedaemonia Lauterbach, 1972, are poorly known and understudied from faunistic and ecological aspects. A review of published and new records of two species in the Balkan Peninsula and Crete is presented. Material and methods: The scorpionflies were caught by various entomologists using a sweeping net, preserved in ethanol, and sent to the article authors. Results: Altogether five unpublished records of P. rufostigma and 19 unpublished records of P. lacedaemonia are presented. The paper summarizes the data on the identification, phenology, altitude preferences and habitats of both species. Three collecting places of P. lacedaemonia in south Albania are the first records in the country. Color images detailing some morphological characters of P. lacedaemonia are presented for the first time. Conclusions: Both species have a wider geographical distribution than previously known. The species P. rufostigma is a summer/autumn species preferring shrubby or semi-open stands, often of dry character. The species P. lacedaemonia occurs the whole year with two distributional peaks between and prefers forest or bushy stands, often by water

The first record of scorpion-fly Panorpa schweigeri Willmann, 1975 (Insecta, Mecoptera, Panorpidae) from Bulgaria

The author presents the first record of Panorpa schweigeri from Bulgaria as well as the first record of any species of the Panorpa aspoecki group outside Turkey. Two females (one dissected) were caught in 1973 in Kalovo (Strandzha Mountain), ca. 30 km NE of the locality Velika near Kırklareli in Turkey, where P. schweigeri was published in original description

Výsledky malakologického inventarizačního průzkumu PR Lazurový vrch (Slavkovský les, západní Čechy)

Altogether 37 species of terrestrial gastropods were found during the survey of the Lazurový Vrch National Reserve in the Slavkovský Les Mts. in 2008. Two species published in 1950 from this site were not verified: Pupilla muscorum and Causa holosericea. The reserve under study is covered by spruce and broadleaf forests; so almost 65% of recorded species belong among strictly or predominantly forest species. Only five species are included in the Red List of the Czech molluscs. Two species are very interesting from ecological and faunal point of view. Vulnerable species Vertigo alpestris is remarkable because of its isolated occurrence in this region. Endangered species Clausilia bidentata occurs in northern and western Bohemia only. The Slavkovský Les Mts. (together with the northernmost part of the Český Les Mts.) represents very compact area of distribution of the species in the Czech Republic. The find from the Lazurový Vrch Reserve represents the new locality for C. bidentata. Interesting observation from the reserve was the occurrence of C. bidentata on relatively rare Acer pseudoplatanus and Fraxinus excelsior trees only. No specimens were found on much commoner Acer platanoides and Tilia cordata trees

The findings of Cepaea nemoralis (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Oreophyticum of the Krušné Hory Mts. (Western Czech Republic)

Cepaea nemoralis was found in four settlements in the Krušné Hory Mts. in altitudes between 685 and 900 m a.s.l. Two of these records represent the highest known locations of the species in the Czech Republic; so far the species has not been found above 730 m a.s.l

Author has found 49 mollusc species in the Údolí Teplé Nature Reserve in 2007. The most species occur in alder forest near the Teplá River and in small parts of the talus slope covered by mountain ash, willow, and hazel. The richest sites host up to 30 mollusc species. Perpolita petronella (L. Pfeiffer, 1853) is endangered species of the highest conservation importance in the reserve. Other species interesting in term of regional snail fauna are Euconulus praticola (Reinhardt, 1883) (rare species of wetlands), Semilimax kotulae (Westerlund, 1883), and Discus ruderatus (A. Férussac, 1821) (both boreoalpine species of mountain forests). The mollusc assemblages consist of forest species (ca. 1⁄2), wetland and aquatic species (ca. 1⁄4), and mesophilous species (ca. 1⁄4). Although some open sites are presented in the reserve (along the railway), no xerophilous species or species of open habitats were found. No specific management is necessary to preservation of relatively rich mollusc assemblages
