Are Farmers Made Whole by Trade Aid?
The USDA provided roughly $23.5 billion in Market Facilitation Program payments to compensate farmers for market losses due to retaliatory tariffs imposed by China and other countries. We examine the distribution of these payments across crops, farms, and regions. Payment rates are larger than estimated price impacts of retaliatory tariffs for most commodities—the difference is especially large for cotton and sorghum. Payment rates relative to farmland cash rent or on a per-farm basis are greatest in the South. While payments exceed the tariff-related price impact in the short run, the program may not compensate for long-run losses due to the trade conflict
Nuclear Matter Properties of the Modified Quark Meson Coupling Model
We explore in more detail the modified quark meson coupling (MQMC) model in
nuclear matter. Based on previous studies two different functional forms for
the density dependence of the bag constant are discussed. For uniform matter
distributions the MQMC model can be cast in a form identical to QHD by a
redefinition of the sigma meson field. It is then clear that modifications
similar to those introduced in QHD will permit the reproduction of all nuclear
matter properties including the compressibility. After calibrating the model
parameters at equilibrium nuclear matter density, the model and parameter
dependence of the resulting equation of state is examined. Nucleon properties
and scaling relations between the bag constant and the effective nucleon mass

Evidence for particle-hole excitations in the triaxial strongly-deformed well of ^{163}Tm
Two interacting, strongly-deformed triaxial (TSD) bands have been identified
in the Z = 69 nucleus ^{163}Tm. This is the first time that interacting TSD
bands have been observed in an element other than the Z = 71 Lu nuclei, where
wobbling bands have been previously identified. The observed TSD bands in
^{163}Tm appear to be associated with particle-hole excitations, rather than
wobbling. Tilted-Axis Cranking (TAC) calculations reproduce all experimental
observables of these bands reasonably well and also provide an explanation for
the presence of wobbling bands in the Lu nuclei, and their absence in the Tm

A Crystal Structure of the Bifunctional Antibiotic Simocyclinone D8, Bound to DNA Gyrase
Simocyclinones are bifunctional antibiotics that inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase by preventing DNA binding to the enzyme. We report the crystal structure of the complex formed between the N-terminal domain of the Escherichia coli gyrase A subunit and simocyclinone D8, revealing two binding pockets that separately accommodate the aminocoumarin and polyketide moieties of the antibiotic. These are close to, but distinct from, the quinolone-binding site, consistent with our observations that several mutations in this region confer resistance to both agents. Biochemical studies show that the individual moieties of simocyclinone D8 are comparatively weak inhibitors of gyrase relative to the parent compound, but their combination generates a more potent inhibitor. Our results should facilitate the design of drug molecules that target these unexploited binding pockets
Quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction in noncommutative phase space and analog Landau levels
We have studied a quantum dot with Rashba spin orbit interaction on a plane
where the position and momentum coordinates are considered to be
noncommutative. The energy spectrum of the system is found to be equivalent to
that of a quantum dot with Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a magnetic field

Photon interferometry and size of the hot zone in relativistic heavy ion collisions
The parameters obtained from the theoretical analysis of the single photon
spectra observed by the WA98 collaboration at SPS energies have been used to
evaluate the two photon correlation functions. The single photon spectra and
the two photon correlations at RHIC energies have also been evaluated, taking
into account the effects of the possible spectral change of hadrons in a

Time-Varying Dark Energy Constraints From the Latest SN Ia, BAO and SGL
Based on the latest SNe Ia data provided by Hicken et al. (2009) with using
MLCS17 light curve fitter, together with the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation(BAO)
and strong gravitational lenses(SGL), we investigate the constraints on the
dark energy equation-of-state parameter in the flat universe, especially
for the time-varying case . The constraints from SNe data
alone are found to be: (a) as the best-fit
results; (b) for
the two parameters in the time-varying case after marginalizing the parameter
; (c) the likelihood of parameter has a high non-Gaussian
distribution; (d) an extra restriction on is necessary to improve
the constraint of the SNe Ia data on the parameters (, ). A joint
analysis of SNe Ia data and BAO is made to break the degeneracy between and
, and leads to the interesting maximum likelihoods and
. When marginalizing the parameter , the fitting results are
found to be . After
adding the splitting angle statistic of SGL data, a consistent constraint is
obtained and the constraints on time-varying
dark energy are further improved to be , which indicates that the phantom type models are
