International audienceABSTRACT: The Ganser syndrome is rare in children and in adolescents. A case of Ganser syndrome in a 14-year-old girl, with three of the four essential features, is presented. After rapid resolution in two weeks, Ganser symptoms reappear seven months later accompanied, this second time, by previous depressive symptoms. This report raises the possibility of Ganser syndrome as a manifestation of depressive disorder in adolescence

Association between Body Mass Index and depression: the "fat and jolly" hypothesis for adolescents girls

    Get PDF
International audienceABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Results concerning the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and depression in adolescence are conflicting, some describing a linear association (increase in BMI with level of depression), some a U-shaped association (both underweight and obesity are associated with high levels of depression), and they mostly concern small samples. The purpose of this study was to describe the association between BMI and depression in a large representative sample of French adolescents. METHODS: The association between BMI and depression, measured on the Adolescent Depression Rating Scale (ADRS), was tested in a French national representative sample of 39542 adolescents aged 17. Self-report data is derived from the 2008 ESCAPAD study, an epidemiological study based on a questionnaire focused on health and drug consumption. We used spline function analysis to describe the association between BMI and depression. RESULTS: The association between BMI and depression is significant (p<0.001) and non-linear for both genders, with no effect of parental working and marital status. For boys, there is U-shaped association. For girls the shape of the association is complex and shows inverted convexity for high levels of BMI. The spline shows higher scores for depression among overweight girls than among obese girls. CONCLUSION: There is evidence for a gender difference in the association between BMI and depression in adolescents, supporting the need to study boys and girls separately. Overweight adolescent girls are more likely to be depressed than obese adolescent girls, giving support for "fat and jolly" hypothesis not only among older women but also among adolescent girls

Current management of limited-stage SCLC and CONVERT trial impact:Results of the EORTC Lung Cancer Group survey

Objectives: The CONVERT trial showed that twice-daily (BD) concurrent chemoradiotherapy should continue tobe considered the standard of care in localised LS-SCLC. A survey was conducted to assess the impact of theCONVERT trial in clinical practice and to identify any relevant research questions for future trials in this setting. Methods and materials: An EORTC Group online survey of LS-SCLC practice was distributed to the EORTC LCGand to members of several European thoracic oncology societies between April and December 2018.Results: 198 responses were analysed. The majority of respondents (88%, n=174) were aware of the CONVERTtrial. Radiation oncologists comprised 56% of all respondents. Once-daily (OD) radiotherapy is still the mostcommonly used regimen, however the use of concurrent BD radiotherapy increased after the publication ofCONVERT (n=59/186, 32% prior to and n=78/187, 42% after the publication, p=0.053). The main reasonsfor not implementing BD after the CONVERT publication were logistical issues (n=88, 44%), inconvenience forpatients (n=56, 28%), and the absence of a statistical survival difference between the two arms in CONVERT(n=38, 19%). Brain MRI was used by 28% during staging but more than half (60%) of the respondents did notroutinely image the brain during follow-up. The main research questions of interest in LS-SCLC were 1) integratingnovel targeted therapies-immunotherapies (n=160, 81%), 2) PCI (+/- hippocampal sparing) vs. MRIsurveillance (n=140, 71%) and, 3) biomarker driven trials (n=92, 46%).Conclusion: Once daily radiotherapy (60–66 Gy in 30–33 fractions) remains the most prescribed radiotherapyfractionation, despite the findings suggested by the CONVERT trial.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Acquired in 2008, Corinth (1903), one of the rare original plasters made by J.-L. Gérôme (1824-1904), is probably the last work of the artist who was better known for his paintings. To obtain a clearer understanding of the production techniques involved and the condition of the statue at the time of its purchase, this sculpture underwent a preliminary study, jointly conducted by the Musée d’Orsay and the conservators and relevant departments. This initial study showed how J.-L. Gérôme’s subtle polychromy was concealed by a layer of thick paint applied in the early 20th century. After several tests, the bold decision to uncover the original polychromy was made. Refreshed by restorers, this polychromy today enables us to better appreciate the innovative character of this work and regret that the location of the posthumous marble, also in colour, remains unknown

This project was funded by the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) PHR project 10/3000/07.Background This study examines whether young never smokers in Scotland, UK, who have tried an e-cigarette are more likely than those who have not, to try a cigarette during the following year. Methods Prospective cohort survey conducted in four high schools in Scotland, UK during February/March 2015 (n=3807) with follow-up 1 year later. All pupils (age 11–18) were surveyed. Response rates were high in both years (87% in 2015) and 2680/3807 (70.4%) of the original cohort completed the follow-up survey. Analysis was restricted to baseline ‘never smokers’ (n=3001/3807), 2125 of whom were available to follow-up (70.8%). Results At baseline, 183 of 2125 (8.6%) never smokers had tried an e-cigarette and 1942 had not. Of the young people who had not tried an e-cigarette at baseline, 249 (12.8%) went on to try smoking a cigarette by follow-up. This compares with 74 (40.4%) of those who had tried an e-cigarette at baseline. This effect remained significant in a logistic regression model adjusted for smoking susceptibility, having friends who smoke, family members’ smoking status, age, sex, family affluence score, ethnic group and school (adjusted OR 2.42 (95% CI 1.63 to 3.60)). There was a significant interaction between e-cigarette use and smoking susceptibility and between e-cigarette use and smoking within the friendship group. Conclusions Young never smokers are more likely to experiment with cigarettes if they have tried an e-cigarette. Causality cannot be inferred, but continued close monitoring of e-cigarette use in young people is warranted.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain High-Throughput Sequencing in Pediatric B-Precursor Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Is the Clonality of the Disease at Diagnosis Related to Its Prognosis?

peer reviewedHigh-throughput sequencing (HTS) of the immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) locus is a recent very efficient technique to monitor minimal residual disease of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). It also reveals the sequences of clonal rearrangements, therefore, the multiclonal structure, of BCP-ALL. In this study, we performed IgH HTS on the diagnostic bone marrow of 105 children treated between 2004 and 2008 in Belgium for BCP-ALL in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)-58951 clinical trial. Patients were included irrespectively of their outcome. We described the patterns of clonal complexity at diagnosis and investigated its association with patients' characteristics. Two indicators of clonal complexity were used, namely, the number of foster clones, described as clones with similar D-N2-J rearrangements but other V-rearrangement and N1-joining, and the maximum across all foster clones of the number of evolved clones from one foster clone. The maximum number of evolved clones was significantly higher in patients with t(12;21)/ETV6:RUNX1. A lower number of foster clones was associated with a higher risk group after prephase and t(12;21)/ETV6:RUNX1 genetic type. This study observes that clonal complexity as accessed by IgH HTS is linked to prognostic factors in childhood BCP-ALL, suggesting that it may be a useful diagnostic tool for BCP-ALL status and prognosis
