Uniform subdivision algorithms for curves and surfaces
A convergence analysis for studying the continuity and differentiability of limit curves generated by uniform subdivision algorithms is presented. The analysis is based on the study of corresponding difference and divided difference algorithms. The alternative process of "integrating" the algorithms is considered. A specific example of a 4-point interpolatory curve algorithm is described and its generalization to a surface algorithm defined over a subdivision of a regular triangular partition is illustrated
Genome-wide host RNA signatures of infectious diseases: discovery and clinical translation
The use of whole blood gene expression to derive diagnostic biomarkers capable of distinguishing between phenotypically similar diseases holds great promise but remains a challenge. Differential gene expression analysis is used to identify the key genes that undergo changes in expression relative to healthy individuals, as well as to patients with other diseases. These key genes can act as diagnostic, prognostic and predictive markers of disease. Gene expression 'signatures' in the blood hold potential to be used for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, where current diagnostics are unreliable, ineffective or of limited potential. For diagnostic tests based on RNA signatures to be useful clinically, the first step is to identify the minimum set of gene transcripts that accurately identify the disease in question. The second requirement is rapid and cost effective detection of the gene expression levels. Whilst signatures have been described for a number of infectious diseases, 'clinic-ready' technologies for RNA detection from clinical samples are limited, though existing methods such as reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) are likely to be superseded by a number of emerging technologies, which may form the basis of the translation of gene expression signatures into routine diagnostic tests for a range of disease states
Remembering the forgotten non-communicable diseases
The forthcoming post-Millennium Development Goals era will bring about new challenges in global health. Low- and middle-income countries will have to contend with a dual burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Some of these NCDs, such as neoplasms, COPD, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, cause much health loss worldwide and are already widely recognised as doing so. However, 55% of the global NCD burden arises from other NCDs, which tend to be ignored in terms of premature mortality and quality of life reduction. Combinatorial RNA Design: Designability and Structure-Approximating Algorithm
In this work, we consider the Combinatorial RNA Design problem, a minimal
instance of the RNA design problem which aims at finding a sequence that admits
a given target as its unique base pair maximizing structure. We provide
complete characterizations for the structures that can be designed using
restricted alphabets. Under a classic four-letter alphabet, we provide a
complete characterization of designable structures without unpaired bases. When
unpaired bases are allowed, we provide partial characterizations for classes of
designable/undesignable structures, and show that the class of designable
structures is closed under the stutter operation. Membership of a given
structure to any of the classes can be tested in linear time and, for positive
instances, a solution can be found in linear time. Finally, we consider a
structure-approximating version of the problem that allows to extend bands
(helices) and, assuming that the input structure avoids two motifs, we provide
a linear-time algorithm that produces a designable structure with at most twice

Human genetics of meningococcal infections
Neisseria meningitidis is a leading cause of bacterial septicaemia and meningitis worldwide. Meningococcal disease is rare but can be life threatening with a tendency to affect children. Many studies have investigated the role of human genetics in predisposition to N. meningitidis infection. These have identified both rare single-gene mutations as well as more common polymorphisms associated with meningococcal disease susceptibility and severity. These findings provide clues to the pathogenesis of N. meningitidis, the basis of host susceptibility to infection and to the aetiology of severe disease. From the multiple discoveries of monogenic complement deficiencies to the associations of complement factor H and complement factor H-related three polymorphisms to meningococcal disease, the complement pathway is highlighted as being central to the genetic control of meningococcal disease. This review aims to summarise the current understanding of the host genetic basis of meningococcal disease with respect to the different stages of meningococcal infection
Schwannoma of the common peroneal nerve – a rare incidence
Schwannomas are benign tumours arising from neurilemmal cells which forms the myelin sheath of peripheral nerves. It usually occurs in the head, but may be found in the brachial plexus and sciatic nerve. Common peroneal nerve schwannoma are rare. We report a case of a middle age gentleman who presented with pain and swelling over the right popliteal fossa with associated right radicular pain of the anterolateral leg and weakness of ankle dorsiflexion. Examination revealed a 3x2 cm lump behind the posterolateral aspect of the right knee with positiveTinel’s sign upon tapping of the lump, sensory deficit over the anterolateral aspect of the leg and the ankle dorsiflexors had a muscle power of grade 3. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the right leg revealed a well circumscribed, oval lesion located along the pathway of the common peroneal nerve homogenously hypointense on T1-weighted images and heterogeneously hyperintense on T2 weighted images compared to the muscles. The lesion was not surpressed on fat suppression sequences. Intra-operatively, we noted that the schwannoma was in continuity with the common peroneal nerve. The patient underwent excision of the schwannoma. Post operatively, the pain reduced remarkably but patient suffers from numbness and right foot drop as a complication of the tumour. This case highlights the rarity of common peroneal nerve schwannoma which presents with neuropathic symptoms complicated with right foot drop
Subtidal macrozoobenthos communities from northern Chile during and post El Niño 1997–1998
Despite a large amount of climatic and oceanographic information dealing with the recurring climate phenomenon El Niño (EN) and its well known impact on diversity of marine benthic communities, most published data are rather descriptive and consequently our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and processes that drive community structure during EN are still very scarce. In this study, we address two questions on the effects of EN on macrozoobenthic communities: (1) how does EN affect species diversity of the communities in northern Chile? and (2) is EN a phenomenon that restarts community assembling processes by affecting species interactions in northern Chile? To answer these questions, we compared species diversity and co-occurrence patterns of soft-bottoms macrozoobenthos communities from the continental shelf off northern Chile during (March 1998) and after (September 1998) the strong EN event 1997–1998. The methods used varied from species diversity and species co-occurrence analyses to multivariate ordination methods.
Our results indicate that EN positively affects diversity of macrozoobenthos communities in the study area, increasing the species richness and diversity and decreasing the species dominance. EN represents a strong disturbance that affects species interactions that rule the species assembling processes in shallow-water, sea-bottom environments
Transcriptomic Profiling in Childhood H1N1/09 Influenza Reveals Reduced Expression of Protein Synthesis Genes
We compared the blood RNA transcriptome of children hospitalized with influenza A H1N1/09, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or bacterial infection, and healthy controls. Compared to controls, H1N1/09 patients showed increased expression of inflammatory pathway genes and reduced expression of adaptive immune pathway genes. This was validated on an independent cohort. The most significant function distinguishing H1N1/09 patients from controls was protein synthesis, with reduced gene expression. Reduced expression of protein synthesis genes also characterized the H1N1/09 expression profile compared to children with RSV and bacterial infection, suggesting that this is a key component of the pathophysiological response in children hospitalized with H1N1/09 infection
The Underestimation Of Egocentric Distance: Evidence From Frontal Matching Tasks
There is controversy over the existence, nature, and cause of error in egocentric distance judgments. One proposal is that the systematic biases often found in explicit judgments of egocentric distance along the ground may be related to recently observed biases in the perceived declination of gaze (Durgin & Li, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, in press), To measure perceived egocentric distance nonverbally, observers in a field were asked to position themselves so that their distance from one of two experimenters was equal to the frontal distance between the experimenters. Observers placed themselves too far away, consistent with egocentric distance underestimation. A similar experiment was conducted with vertical frontal extents. Both experiments were replicated in panoramic virtual reality. Perceived egocentric distance was quantitatively consistent with angular bias in perceived gaze declination (1.5 gain). Finally, an exocentric distance-matching task was contrasted with a variant of the egocentric matching task. The egocentric matching data approximate a constant compression of perceived egocentric distance with a power function exponent of nearly 1; exocentric matches had an exponent of about 0.67. The divergent pattern between egocentric and exocentric matches suggests that they depend on different visual cues
