Ankara : The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and the Graduate School of Engineering and Science of Bilkent University, 2013.Thesis (Ph. D.) -- Bilkent University, 2013.Includes bibliographical references leaves 128-152.Plasmonics have attracted a great deal of interest because of their potential to design novel photonics devices which have unique optical properties. This dissertation focuses on novel plasmonic device designs for photonics applications. Electromagnetic properties of metamaterials are characterized and the resonance mechanism of Split Ring Resonator (SRR) structure is investigated. Furthermore, novel SRR-based metamaterial structures are studied. We demonstrated the significant plasmonic enhancement in the transmission characteristics through a sub-wavelength aperture by utilizing SRR resonances. Electrical tuning of plasmonic resonance with varying gate bias by using graphene is observed. Also, electrical properties of graphene is investigated. Fabrication of electrically gated graphene based plasmonic structures are realized. In addition, we utilized metamaterials to design novel photonic devices and we experimentally studied and numerically verified the novel propagation characteristics of graphene-based photonic devices and 3D nanostructures. The proposed structures are designed, simulated, fabricated and measured. The simulations and experimental results are in good agreement and shows significant enhancement of transmission characteristics of plasmonic devices. The dimensions of the structures that are designed in our work is less than 10 times smaller than the incident wavelength (r/λ~0.1) which is a desired property for enhanced light confinement of sensors. Also, the gate tuning of SRR's plasmonic resonance is the first demonstration in the contemporary literature according to our knowledge.Şahin, LeventPh.D

In the Turkish Black Sea coasts fish is particularly consumed because of high protein supplies, essential amino acids, vitamin, and mineral content. Fish are exposed to contaminants such as heavy metals in polluted waters. The aims of the study are to determine heavy metals in Pleuronectiformes species from Sinop coasts of the Black Sea and determine the health risks due to the consumption of contaminated fish. Pleuronectiformes species Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) belonging to Scophthalmidae family, Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792) belonging to Bothidae family and Pegusa lascaris (Risso, 1810) belonging to Soleidae family were collected from Sinop coasts of the Black Sea in fishing season of 2016. Heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn) in edible tissues were determined by ICP-MS (Agilent 7700x). The limit values given by the international and national organizations did not exceed in the muscle tissues of turbot, Mediterranean scald fish and sand sole. Overall Zn was detected in higher concentrations in all species followed by Cu, Pb, Hg and Cd. The results obtained from the analyses of the maximum levels of the metals except Hg were found in turbot. The highest Hg (0.021±0.007 µg g-1 wet wt.) was found in sand sole. However, the high amounts of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in turbot were 0.011±0.004, 0.07±0.005,1.32±0.28 and 14±3 µg g-1 wet wt., respectively. The EDIs and EWIs of the metals were estimated taking into account the mean of metal in all fish samples and the mean consumption of fish per day/week for adults. These results are normally significantly lower than the recommended values of FAO/WHO. Estimated HIs of all the considered metals were below the value of 1, therefore the metals in fish samples do not toxic any apparent threat to the population and these fishes are healthy for consumption. Keywords: Scophthalmus maximus, Arnoglossus laterna, Pegusa lascaris, heavy metals, Black Se

    Get PDF
Introduction: Juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) is a subtype of granulosa cell tumors of the ovary. 80% of JGCT occurs at prepubertal period. And, it is considered to be a slow growing tumor. In addition, gross appearence of it is mostly solid. Herein, we report a pure cystic JGCT case that was detected soon after childbirth with huge dimension.Presentation of Case: We report a 21 year-old woman who presented with abdominal mass during 6th month after childbirth. Ultrasound revealed a cystic mass of approximately 20 cm in diameter originated from left ovary. The patient underwent laparotomy and unruptured left ovarian cystic mass resection was performed. Uterus and right ovary were totally normal and extraovarian spread was not found. Macroscopic examination revealed totally cystic tumor of 25,5x22x10,2 cm with smooth outlines, containing serous fluid. There were papillary projections and small polypoid structures around 1 cm in diameter into the cavity. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings were compatible with JGCT. Relaparotomy was performed for staging and the patient was evaluated as stage IA. She is currently under clinical follow up without any further treatment. Conclusion: It should be noted that JGCT may rapidly grow and reach a higher dimension, occur during pregnancy and at postpartum period, and may present as cystic rather than a solid mass as in our case presented here

Optimization of Rheology Parameters for Feedstock by Powder Injection Molding (PIM) Via Taguchi Analysis

The most critical process in the powder injection molding method is determining the powder/binder rate and its properties. The most important feature that distinguishes the powder injection molding method from other powder metallurgy production methods is its advantage in producing high raw density and complex shaped parts. However, providing these advantages includes a multi-parameter process that directly affects the injection molding parameters and the final part's mechanical properties. In addition, the difficulty of experimental studies causes energy, time, and cost losses in determining the powder/binder rate and rheological properties of the feedstock so that the advantages of the method turn into a manageable disadvantage. This study performed rheology studies for three different feedstocks (PW/CW/SA, PW/PE/SA, and PEG8000/PP/SA). In this context, this paper determined the rheological properties of different feedstocks to take advantage of the Taguchi analysis. Flow behavior index, viscosity and optimum loading rates were determined separately for all feedstocks. The results exhibited the injection molding can be done with the determined best (58% steatite+PEG8000/PP/SA) F3 feedstock by volume. Based on it was found that viscosity and melt flow index were not a problem for injection molding in three different feedstocks used in the result, advantages and disadvantages were observed
