    A multi-wavelength view on the dusty Wolf-Rayet star WR 48a

    We present results from the first attempts to derive various physical characteristics of the dusty Wolf-Rayet star WR 48a based on a multi-wavelength view of its observational properties. This is done on the basis of new optical and near-infrared spectral observations and on data from various archives in the optical, radio and X-rays. The optical spectrum of WR 48a is acceptably well represented by a sum of two spectra: of a WR star of the WC8 type and of a WR star of the WN8h type. The strength of the interstellar absorption features in the optical spectra of WR 48a and the near-by stars D2-3 and D2-7 (both members of the open cluster Danks 2) indicates that WR 48a is located at a distance of ~4 kpc from us. WR 48a is very likely a thermal radio source and for such a case and smooth (no clumps) wind its radio emission suggests a relatively high mass-loss rate of this dusty WR star (dM/dt = a few x 10^(-4) solar masses per year). Long timescale (years) variability of WR 48a is established in the optical, radio and X-rays. Colliding stellar winds likely play a very important role in the physics of this object.     Iron depletion in the hot bubbles in planetary nebulae

    We have searched for the emission from \fex and \fexiv that is expected from the gas emitting in diffuse X-rays in \bd, NGC 6543, NGC 7009, and NGC 7027. Neither line was detected in any object. Models that fit the X-ray spectra of these objects indicate that the \fex emission should be below our detection thresholds, but the predicted \fexiv emission exceeds our observed upper limits (one sigma) by factors of at least 3.5 to 12. The best explanation for the absence of \fexiv is that the X-ray plasma is depleted in iron. In principle, this result provides a clear chemical signature that may be used to determine the origin of the X-ray gas in either the nebular gas or the stellar wind. At present, though various lines of evidence appear to favour a nebular origin, the lack of atmospheric and nebular iron abundances in the objects studied here precludes a definitive conclusion.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figure

    Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial

    Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials. Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure. Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.     Two Isoforms of Drosophila TRF2 Are Involved in Embryonic Development, Premeiotic Chromatin Condensation, and Proper Differentiation of Germ Cells of Both Sexes

    The Drosophila TATA box-binding protein (TBP)-related factor 2 (TRF2 or TLF) was shown to control a subset of genes different from that controlled by TBP. Here, we have investigated the structure and functions of the trf2 gene. We demonstrate that it encodes two protein isoforms: the previously described 75-kDa TRF2 and a newly identified 175-kDa version in which the same sequence is preceded by a long N-terminal domain with coiled-coil motifs. Chromatography of Drosophila embryo extracts revealed that the long TRF2 is part of a multiprotein complex also containing ISWI. Both TRF2 forms are detected at the same sites on polytene chromosomes and have the same expression patterns, suggesting that they fulfill similar functions. A study of the manifestations of the trf2 mutation suggests an essential role of TRF2 during embryonic Drosophila development. The trf2 gene is strongly expressed in germ line cells of adult flies. High levels of TRF2 are found in nuclei of primary spermatocytes and trophocytes with intense transcription. In ovaries, TRF2 is present both in actively transcribing nurse cells and in the transcriptionally inactive oocyte nuclei. Moreover, TRF2 is essential for premeiotic chromatin condensation and proper differentiation of germ cells of both sexes

    We report the results of Hubble Space Telescope STIS observations of the intriguing luminous blue variable/Wolf-Rayet binary system HD 5980 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Although its spectral characteristics (WN6) are currently very similar to those observed in 1995 in the FUV, some of the line fluxes continue with the increasing trend observed since the 1980s. The erupting star still dominates the emission-line spectrum, and a radial velocity curve from UV lines is derived, supporting previous estimates of its mass (50 M⊙). A rough estimate of 2 × 10-4 M⊙ yr-1 for the current mass-loss rate of this star is derived. The only spectral lines attributable to the close companion are the very extended P Cygni absorption components of the strong UV lines, present only during the eclipse of the eruptor, implying that the wind-wind collision shock cone winds tightly around this companion. A third stellar component contributing to the spectrum is detected through the presence of stationary photospheric absorption lines in the UV spectrum. This object contributes ∼30% to the UV continuum luminosity. A new set of ISM absorption components at -680 km s-1 has appeared as a result of the shock interface between the slow wind (∼400 km s-1) that emerged during the 1994 eruption and the subsequently emerging fast wind (∼2000 km s-1) phases.Fil: Koenigsberger, Gloria. Section 3 describes what artificial intelligence is and how it has been applied. Section 4 considers artificial happiness and the likelihood that artificial intelligence might increase human happiness. Section 5 discusses some prominent related concepts and issues. Section 6 describes the use of artificial agents in economic modeling, and section 7 considers some ways in which economic analysis can offer some hints about what the advent of artificial intelligence might bring. Chapter 8 presents some thoughts about the current state of AI and its future prospects.
