Induced pluripotent stem cells, a giant leap for mankind therapeutic applications
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) technology has propelled the field of stem
cells biology, providing new cells to explore the molecular mechanisms of
pluripotency, cancer biology and aging. A major advantage of human iPSC,
compared to the pluripotent embryonic stem cells, is that they can be generated
from virtually any embryonic or adult somatic cell type without destruction of
human blastocysts. In addition, iPSC can be generated from somatic cells
harvested from normal individuals or patients, and used as a cellular tool to
unravel mechanisms of human development and to model diseases in a manner
not possible before. Besides these fundamental aspects of human biology and
physiology that are revealed using iPSC or iPSC-derived cells, these cells hold an
immense potential for cell-based therapies, and for the discovery of new or
personalized pharmacological treatments for many disorders. Here, we review
some of the current challenges and concerns about iPSC technology. We
introduce the potential held by iPSC for research and development of novel
health-related applications. We briefly present the efforts made by the scientific
and clinical communities to create the necessary guidelines and regulations to
achieve the highest quality standards in the procedures for iPSC generation,
characterization and long-term preservation. Finally, we present some of the
audacious and pioneer clinical trials in progress with iPSC-derived cells.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Observability of hydrogen-rich exospheres in Earth-like exoplanets
(Abridged) The existence of an extended neutral hydrogen exosphere around
small planets can be used as an evidence for the presence of water in their
lower atmosphere but, to date, such feature has not been securely detected in
rocky exoplanets. Planetary exospheres can be observed using transit
spectroscopy of the Lyman- line, which is limited mainly by
interstellar medium absorption in the core of the line, and airglow
contamination from the geocorona when using low-orbit space telescopes. Our
objective is to assess the detectability of the neutral hydrogen exosphere of
an Earth-like planet transiting a nearby M dwarf using Lyman-
spectroscopy and provide the necessary strategies to inform future
observations. The spatial distribution in the upper atmosphere is provided by
an empirical model of the geocorona, and we assume a velocity distribution
based on radiative pressure as the main driver in shaping the exosphere. We
compute the excess absorption in the stellar Lyman- line while in
transit, and use realistic estimates of the uncertainties involved in
observations to determine the observability of the signal. We found that the
signal in Lyman- of the exosphere of an Earth-like exoplanet transiting
M dwarfs with radii between 0.1 and 0.6 R produces an excess absorption
between 50 and 600 ppm. The Lyman- flux of stars decays exponentially
with distance because of interstellar medium absorption, which is the main
observability limitation. Other limits are related to the stellar radial
velocity and instrumental setup. The excess absorption in Lyman- is
observable using LUVOIR/LUMOS in M dwarfs up to a distance of 15 pc. The
analysis of noise-injected data suggests that it would be possible to detect
the exosphere of an Earth-like planet transiting TRAPPIST-1 within 20 transits.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy &

The zebrafish is widely used in studies related to the heart and therefore becomes important to know about the morphology of this organ in this fish. This study aimed to evaluate the numerical and volumetric
densities of cardiomyocytes (Nv(c) and Vv(c), respectively), the volumetric density of interstitium (Vv(i)),
besides of amounts and distribution of connective tissue and vessels in the myocardium at different ages. Sixty five fishes, males and females, aged 12-18 months were analyzed for thirteen weeks. There was a significant decrease in the numerical density of cardiomyocytes and vessels, with increased amount of
connective tissue from week VIII, and a significant increase in volume density of interstitium between the first two and last two weeks. Comparing the animals of week I with the week XIII, there was a significant decrease of 20.7% in the numerical density of cardiomyocytes and 13.6% in the vessels, whereas there
was a significant increase of 17.8% in connective tissue and 12% in volume density of interstitium. It was
verified that throughout studied age no significant change in the volume density of cardiomyocytes. The results of this study provide a description of the components of the Danio rerio heart establishing quantitative parameters that can help understand the morphological and functional mechanisms that operate in this organ
Introduction: Aging is directly associated with the increase of systemic inflammation, a
process known as “Inflammaging”.One of the pro inflammatory cytokines who has been
broadly studied is the IL-17, which is widely present in several chronic diseases.
Physical exercise is recognized as one powerful anti-inflammatory agent, and even in the
elderly population it looks like there are many immune and psychologic benefits form the
practice of regular physical activity. However, the effects of a multi-modal training program
in the IL-17 parameters of an elderly population are still to be studied. The goal of this thesis
is to examine the effects of multi-modal training in the levels of IL-17 of institutionalized
elderly women.
Methods: A total of 25 old women were selected and divided in two groups: multi modal
training (n=13) and control group (n=12). All the participants were evaluated before and after
14 weeks of multi modal training. The training consisted in 2 weekly sessions, each one had
aerobic, strength and flexibility exercises. Blood samples were collected before and after the
intervention phase in order to perform hemogram and IL-17 plasmatic concentration analysis.
It was also assessed the data of functional fitness.
Results: there weren’t significant changes in IL-17 levels in both groups and the hemogram
components were also inalterable after the intervention period (p>0.05). Although changes
weren’t significant, multi modal training promoted a small effect in the improvement of
functional fitness levels in the elderly women who participated in exercise sessions,
something that didn’t happen in the control group.
Conclusion: Despite the unchangeable levels of IL-17 in institutionalized elderly women
submitted to multi modal training, this kind of exercise seems to promote benefits in the
physical capacity of that population
