Brighter Branes, enhancement of photon production by strong magnetic fields in the gauge/gravity correspondence

    Get PDF
We use the gauge/gravity correspondence to calculate the rate of photon production in a strongly coupled N=4 plasma in the presence of an intense magnetic field. We start by constructing a family of back reacted geometries that include the black D3-brane solution, as a smooth limiting case for B=0, and extends to backgrounds with an arbitrarily large constant magnetic field. This family provides the gravitational dual of a field theory in the presence of a very strong magnetic field which intensity can be fixed as desired and allows us to study its effect on the photon production of a quark-gluon plasma. The inclusion of perturbations in the electromagnetic field on these backgrounds is consistent only if the metric is perturbed as well, so we use methods developed to treat operator mixing to manage these general perturbations. Our results show a clear enhancement of photon production with a significant anisotropy, which, in qualitative agreement with the experiments of heavy ion collisions, is particularly noticeable for low P.Comment: This paper was replaced including metric perturbations for consistency of the calculation, and reports important qualitative changes. 43 page

Highly-skilled migration: Estonia's attraction policy and its congruence with the determinants of 'talent mobility'

    Get PDF
In recent years, the phenomenon of highly-skilled migration has increasingly attracted the attention of both academia and policy makers around the world. The potential of the highly-skilled to positively impact economic development in the receiving country has led to a ‘global race for talent’, with countries competing for attracting the ‘best and brightest’. To further develop its knowledge economy, Estonia appears not to want to be left out of this race, as it has recently take active steps to attract the highly-skilled. The aim of this thesis is to provide an insight and a better understanding at Estonia’s current immigration policies and measures in the specific context of attracting highly-skilled third-country nationals in light of the theoretical determinants of ‘talent mobility’ – a proxy for highly-skilled migration. A combination of secondary research, interview analysis with highly-skilled migration stakeholders and a short quantitative analysis on issued temporary residence permits in Estonia were the methodological backbone of the work. The resulting outcome from the empirical analysis shows that Estonia, despite having a very clear objective on the attraction of highly-skilled, does not have a comprehensive policy on this topic, but it has instead a set of independently-carried policies and scarcely coordinated measures in this area. The theoretical determinants of ‘talent mobility’, in line with neoclassical economics paradigm, seem to be only partially addressed by the Estonian immigration policies and measures for attracting highly-skilled third-country nationals. Beyond the results, the author also contributes to this topic by discussing some policy implications and issues recommendations that could help better address these determinants through immigration policies and measureshttp://www.ester.ee/record=b4413012~S1*es

Performance Improvements of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete Using Carbon-Based Fillers

    Get PDF
To further advance the state of the art on the performance improvements of hot mix asphalt concrete, this paper investigates the improvements to cracking damage of hot mix asphalt concrete by the addition of carbon-based fillers. There have been various studies dedicated to measuring the strength performance of asphalt mixtures modified with non-traditional fillers, but many of the current studies seem to have varying success with their results or have results that are not statistically significant. In this research, carbon black and F-516 graphite in various percentages were added into asphalt mixtures as a replacement of the traditionally used hydrated lime powder. Viscosity testing and indirect tension tests (IDT) were conducted on hot mix asphalt and asphalt mastic specimens, respectively. Results from the viscosity tests show that the addition of the carbon-based fillers increase the viscosity of the mastic. Indirect tensile tests with optimum binder contents showed mixed results. Carbon black specimens showed increases in the tensile strength, while graphite specimens showed decreases in the strength. Additional graphite specimens were then prepared with increased binder contents and results from IDT tests found increases in strength, although these improvements were lower than the specimens containing carbon black

Rural schools are usually behind in terms of learning, and part of this could be related to geographical isolation. We explore this hypothesis, assessing the effect of distance between rural schools and local governments on learning in Colombia. We use spatial discontinuous regression models based on detailed administrative records from the education system and granular geographic information. Results indicate that distance to towns and Secretary of Education has significant negative effects on students’ standardized test scores. We evaluated alternative mechanisms, finding that the effect of distance is partly explained by differences in critical educational inputs, such as teachers’ education attainment and contract stability. Finally, we assess the mediating role of a program providing monetary incentives to teachers and principals in remote areas.

Solving Scheduling Problems with Genetic Algorithms using a Priority Encoding Scheme

    Get PDF
Scheduling problems are very hard computational tasks with several applications in multitude of domains. In this work we solve a practical problem motivated by a real industry situation, in which we apply a genetic algorithm for finding an acceptable solution in a very short time interval. The main novelty introduced in this work is the use of a priority based chromosome codification that determines the precedence of a task with respect to other ones, permitting to introduce in a very simple way all problem constraints, including setup costs and workforce availability. Results show the suitability of the approach, obtaining real time solutions for tasks with up to 50 products.Universidad de Málaga.Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Persistence of Red Clover (\u3cem\u3eTrifolium pratense\u3c/em\u3e L.): Relationships between Plant Population and Forage Yield

    Get PDF
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is an important forage species in temperate regions of the world; in Chile, it is a valuable resource for animal production and for the seed industry. However, the main limitation of this species worldwide is the lack of persistence related to the high mortality of plants due to a complex of multiple biotic and abiotic factors (Ortega 1996; Taylor and Quesenberry 1996). Therefore, in 1989, a red clover breeding program was started at INIA Carillanca Research Center, Chile, with the main objectives of improving the survival of plants, forage yield and persistence. Since then, two cultivars have been released to replace the old cultivar Quiñequeli-INIA: first the cultivar Redqueli-INIA and recently Superqueli-INIA. The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship between plant populations of red clover and forage yield

Solubility of three natural compounds with insecticidal activity in supercritical carbon dioxide: Experimental measurements and predictive modeling with the GC-EoS

    Get PDF
In this work, the solubility of thymoquinone, R-(+)-pulegone and 1-octen-3-ol in supercritical CO 2 is determined in a range of conditions typical of supercritical fluid processes such as extraction, fractionation and impregnation. These compounds were selected based in their insecticidal activity which may enable to apply them as biopesticides. Solubility was measured using a semicontinuos method in the temperature range of 45?65 °C and pressure of 8?12 MPa, at a CO 2 flowrate of 0.05?0.10 g/min, which was verified to be low enough to ensure saturation. Solubilities were predicted using the Group Contribution Equation of State (GC-EoS) and compared to the experimental results, with a good agreement. Consistency of the data was tested using the density-based Chrastil equation.Fil: Mazzei, Hernán. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba; Argentina.
