Differences in Communication Strategies in the English Corporate Vision of Samsung Electronics and its Finnish Translation

Preprocessing and Stochastic Local Search in Maximum Satisfiability
Problems which ask to compute an optimal solution to its instances are called optimization problems. The maximum satisfiability (MaxSAT) problem is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem with many applications in domains such as cancer therapy design, electronic markets, hardware debugging and routing. Many problems, including the aforementioned ones, can be encoded in MaxSAT. Thus MaxSAT serves as a general optimization paradigm and therefore advances in MaxSAT algorithms translate to advances in solving other problems.
In this thesis, we analyze the effects of MaxSAT preprocessing, the process of reformulating the input instance prior to solving, on the perceived costs of solutions during search. We show that after preprocessing most MaxSAT solvers may misinterpret the costs of non-optimal solutions. Many MaxSAT algorithms use the found non-optimal solutions in guiding the search for solutions and so the misinterpretation of costs may misguide the search.
Towards remedying this issue, we introduce and study the concept of locally minimal solutions. We show that for some of the central preprocessing techniques for MaxSAT, the perceived cost of a locally minimal solution to a preprocessed instance equals the cost of the corresponding reconstructed solution to the original instance.
We develop a stochastic local search algorithm for MaxSAT, called LMS-SLS, that is prepended with a preprocessor and that searches over locally minimal solutions. We implement LMS-SLS and analyze the performance of its different components, particularly the effects of preprocessing and computing locally minimal solutions, and also compare LMS-SLS with the state-of-the-art SLS solver SATLike for MaxSAT.

Electron Refrigeration in the Tunneling Approach
The qualities of electron refrigeration by means of tunnel junctions between
superconducting and normal--metal electrodes are studied theoretically. A
suitable approximation of the basic expression for the heat current across
those tunnel junctions allows the investigation of several features of the
device such as its optimal bias voltage, its maximal heat current, its optimal
working point, and the maximally gained temperature reduction. Fortunately, the
obtained results can be compared with those of a recent experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Postscript figures, uses eps

Nonequilibrium Superconductor-Normal Metal Tunnel Contact and the Phonon Deficit Effect
We consider tunnel microrefrigerators at low temperature. There is a number
of experimental studies performed on microrefrigeration in tunneling
superconductor--normal metal (SN) structures. Related to these experiments,
only the electron subsystem has been considered theoretically. Independently,
the phonon deficit effect has been studied a while ago in
superconductor-superconductor tunnel junctions. It can be regarded as a
possible prototype scheme for superconducting microrefrigerators. We try to
provide the missing link between experiments on the SN tunnel junction
refrigerators and the theory which includes microscopically phonons in
combination with the mechanism of the phonon deficit effect.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figur

Self-cooling cryogenic microcalorimeters made of SINIS junctions
High quality low leakage SINIS devices made of Al-AlMn-Al layers were
fabricated for energy dispersive single photon detection. Information on
different heat flow channels was extracted from the measured dynamics of
detector signals due to X-ray events. At the optimum operation point, the
extracted effective electron temperature decreased from 88 mK down to 43 mK due
to self-cooling, roughly doubling the detector sensitivity.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Soundbite Detection in Broadcast News Domain
In this paper, we present results of a study designed to identify SOUNDBITES in Broadcast News. We describe a Conditional Random Field-based model for the detection of these included speech segments uttered by individuals who are interviewed or who are the subject of a news story. Our goal is to identify direct quotations in spoken corpora which can be directly attributable to particular individuals, as well as to associate these soundbites with their speakers. We frame soundbite detection as a binary classification problem in which each turn is categorized either as a soundbite or not. We use lexical, acoustic/prosodic and structural features on a turn level to train a CRF. We performed a 10-fold cross validation experiment in which we obtained an accuracy of 67.4 % and an F-measure of 0.566 which is 20.9 % and 38.6 % higher than a chance baseline.
