    Mars surface transportation options

    As the number of scientific experiments for the surface of Mars grows, the need for effective surface transportation becomes critical. Because of the diversity of the experiments proposed, as well as the desire to explore Mars from the equator to the poles, the optimum surface vehicle configuration is not obvious. Five candidate vehicles are described, with an estimate of their size and performance. In order to maximize the success of a manned Mars mission, it appears that two vehicles should be designed for surface transportation: an advanced long-range rover, and a remotely-piloted airplane

    The Expansive Canopy of Korean Green Growth: Key Aspects for Forest Conservation Projects in Southeast Asia

    This article provides an international law context for Korea Low Carbon, Green Growth Fundamental Act (the CGGFA in order to illustrate potential applications of the LCGGFA in multinational forest conservation-related projects. The international law of sustainable development and ongoing efforts to address climate change are described. Korea relevant history and recent lawmaking are then introduced, with a special focus upon the LCGGFA structure and its distinctive features. The article then analyzes potential transplantations of various concepts and structures of the LCGGFA to other legal systems. The final section of the article focuses upon particular methods by which Korean law and policy can facilitate forestryrelated conservation and sustainable economic development projects, such as in heavily rainforested nations of Southeast Asia. I hope that this assessment will prove helpful as governments and private parties consider concrete steps to achieve durable and equitable carbon emission reductions in the forestry sector

    Time-dependent perturbation theory for vibrational energy relaxation and dephasing in peptides and proteins

    Without invoking the Markov approximation, we derive formulas for vibrational energy relaxation (VER) and dephasing for an anharmonic system oscillator using a time-dependent perturbation theory. The system-bath Hamiltonian contains more than the third order coupling terms since we take a normal mode picture as a zeroth order approximation. When we invoke the Markov approximation, our theory reduces to the Maradudin-Fein formula which is used to describe VER properties of glass and proteins. When the system anharmonicity and the renormalization effect due to the environment vanishes, our formulas reduce to those derived by Mikami and Okazaki invoking the path-integral influence functional method [J. Chem. Phys. 121 (2004) 10052].     International climate change negotiations reached a critical crossroads in 2012. Facing the conclusion of the Kyoto Protocol and with no successor regime yet negotiated, nations have been compelled to re-engage in substantive and far-ranging discussions. The nation of Korea has distinguished itself in this process, in particular by hosting the final ministerial meeting prior to this year Conference of the Parties in Doha, Qatar. The Korean government willingness to lead has also been evidenced by Korea founding of the Global Green Growth Institute, a leading international organization in the area of environmentally responsible economic development, and Korea successful bid to host the Green Climate Fund secretariat. Korean diplomacy has aided in the consensus to extend the Kyoto Protocol and to continue efforts to implement a new climate change architecture by 2020

    Korean Green Growth: A Paradigm Shift in Sustainability Policy, and its International Implications

    This article evaluates Koreas green growth law and policies in order to assess the role of green growth in international environmental law. We provide a short overview of Korean law and policy and contextualize Korean green growth by comparing it to the OECDs green growth vision. We then critically examine green growth from administrative and international law perspectives. Building on this analysis, we consider how the Korean domestic experience, and the initial efforts made to transplant aspects of green growth in other nations, can provide insight into future environmental and economic policies. While proponents of green growth continue to face significant challenges in Korea and abroad, there have been notable initial successes. Koreas forthcoming introduction of an emissions trading system and the collaboration between Korea and Cambodia to develop Cambodias institutional capacity for green growth are two conspicuous examples. Green growth remains a promising framework in Korea and abroad; its ultimate impact will depend upon sustained political and social support for the implementation of the ambitious policies green growth prescribes.This research is supported by the SNU Brain Fusion Program Research Grant in 2010

    Evaluation of immunoglobulin purification methods and their impact on quality and yield of antigen-specific antibodies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Antibodies are the main effectors against malaria blood-stage parasites. Evaluation of functional activities in immune sera from Phase 2a/b vaccine trials may provide invaluable information in the search for immune correlates of protection. However, the presence of anti-malarial-drugs, improper collection/storage conditions or concomitant immune responses against other pathogens can contribute to non-specific anti-parasite activities when the sera/plasma are tested <it>in vitro</it>. Purification of immunoglobulin is a standard approach for reducing such non-specific background activities, but the purification method itself can alter the quality and yield of recovered Ag-specific antibodies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To address this concern, various immunoglobulin (Ig) purification methods (protein G Sepharose, protein A/G Sepharose, polyethylene glycol and caprylic acid-ammonium sulphate precipitation) were evaluated for their impact on the quality, quantity and functional activity of purified rabbit and human Igs. The recovered Igs were analysed for yield and purity by SDS-PAGE, for quality by Ag-specific ELISAs (determining changes in titer, avidity and isotype distribution) and for functional activity by <it>in vitro </it>parasite growth inhibition assay (GIA).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This comparison demonstrated that overall polyethylene glycol purification of human serum/plasma samples and protein G Sepharose purification of rabbit sera are optimal for recovering functional Ag-specific antibodies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Consequently, critical consideration of the purification method is required to avoid selecting non-representative populations of recovered Ig, which could influence interpretations of vaccine efficacy, or affect the search for immune correlates of protection.</p

    Spatially Explicit Data: Stewardship and Ethical Challenges in Science

    Scholarly communication is at an unprecedented turning point created in part by the increasing saliency of data stewardship and data sharing. Formal data management plans represent a new emphasis in research, enabling access to data at higher volumes and more quickly, and the potential for replication and augmentation of existing research. Data sharing has recently transformed the practice, scope, content, and applicability of research in several disciplines, in particular in relation to spatially specific data. This lends exciting potentiality, but the most effective ways in which to implement such changes, particularly for disciplines involving human subjects and other sensitive information, demand consideration. Data management plans, stewardship, and sharing, impart distinctive technical, sociological, and ethical challenges that remain to be adequately identified and remedied. Here, we consider these and propose potential solutions for their amelioration
