    Neutron imaging at PSI: a promising tool in materials science andtechnology

    Neutron imaging as a method for non-destructive studies takes advantage of the alternative contrast mechanism of neutrons compared to X-rays: most of the light elements feature high contrast, whereas heavy elements are relatively transparent to neutrons. In the previous decade, the neutron imaging technique has made substantial progress in well-tailored and well-equipped beam lines, in improvements of the image recording quality and efficiency by new and modern imaging techniques, and in modern image processing tools. This article gives an overview of PSI's activities in this promising and still developing field combining high potential as research tool and as technique for industrial investigation and non-destructive testing. Examples are chosen from the fields of energy and mobility and inspection of highly activated samples. Furthermore, recent developments in phase contrast imaging and energy selective imaging studies are highlighted. Finally, future trends in neutron imaging are addresse

    The role of radiative cooling and leaf wetting in air–leaf water exchange during dew and radiation fog events in a temperate grassland

    During prolonged dry periods, non-rainfall water (NRW) plays a vital role as water input into temperate grasslands, affecting the leaf surface water balance and plant water status. Previous chamber and laboratory experiments investigated air–leaf water exchange during dew deposition, but overlooked the importance of radiative cooling on air–leaf water exchange because the chamber is a heat trap, preventing radiative cooling. To complement these previous studies, we conducted a field study, in which we investigated the effect of radiatively-induced NRW inputs on leaf water isotope signals and air–leaf water exchange in a temperate grassland during the dry-hot summers of 2018 and 2019. We carried out field measurements of the isotope composition of atmospheric water vapor, NRW droplets on foliage, leaf water, xylem water of root crown, and soil water, combined with meteorological and plant physiological measurements. We combined radiation measurements with thermal imaging to estimate leaf temperatures using different methods, and computed the corresponding leaf conductance and air–leaf water exchange. Our results indicate that radiative cooling and leaf wetting induced a switch of direction in the net water vapor exchange from leaf-to-air to air-to-leaf. The leaf conductance and air–leaf water exchange varied by species due to the species-specific biophysical controls. Our results highlight the ecological relevance of radiative cooling and leaf wetting in natural temperate grasslands, a process which is expected to influence land surface water budgets and may impact plant survival in many regions in a drier climate

    Malate as a key carbon source of leaf dark-respired CO2 across different environmental conditions in potato plants

    Dissimilation of carbon sources during plant respiration in support of metabolic processes results in the continuous release of CO(2). The carbon isotopic composition of leaf dark-respired CO(2) (i.e. δ (13) C (R)) shows daily enrichments up to 14.8‰ under different environmental conditions. However, the reasons for this (13)C enrichment in leaf dark-respired CO(2) are not fully understood, since daily changes in δ(13)C of putative leaf respiratory carbon sources (δ (13) C (RS)) are not yet clear. Thus, we exposed potato plants (Solanum tuberosum) to different temperature and soil moisture treatments. We determined δ (13) C (R) with an in-tube incubation technique and δ (13) C (RS) with compound-specific isotope analysis during a daily cycle. The highest δ (13) C (RS) values were found in the organic acid malate under different environmental conditions, showing less negative values compared to δ (13) C (R) (up to 5.2‰) and compared to δ (13) C (RS) of soluble carbohydrates, citrate and starch (up to 8.8‰). Moreover, linear relationships between δ (13) C (R) and δ (13) C (RS) among different putative carbon sources were strongest for malate during daytime (r(2)=0.69, P≤0.001) and nighttime (r(2)=0.36, P≤0.001) under all environmental conditions. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed δ (13) C (RS) of malate as the most important carbon source influencing δ (13) C (R). Thus, our results strongly indicate malate as a key carbon source of (13)C enriched dark-respired CO(2) in potato plants, probably driven by an anapleurotic flux replenishing intermediates of the Krebs cycle

    Predicting the effects of biochar on volatile petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation and emanation from soil: a bacterial community finger-print analysis inferred modelling approach

    We investigated the response of the dominant bacterial taxa in gravelly sand to the addition of biochar and/or mixtures of volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPHs) using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and sequencing of cut bands. Biochar addition alone had only weak effects on the soil bacterial community composition in batch study samples, while VPH addition had strong effects. Indirect effects of biochar on soil bacterial communities were apparent in column study samples, where biochar-enhanced sorption affected VPH spreading. Following VPH addition, cell abundance increased by no more than a factor of 2 and several Pseudomonas spp. became dominant in soil with and without biochar. We present a VPH fate model that considers soil bacterial biomass dynamics and a nutrient limited soil biomass carrying capacity. The model simulates an apparent lag phase before the onset of a brief period of intensive VPH biodegradation and biomass growth, which is followed by substantially slower VPH biodegradation, when nitrogen needs to be recycled between decaying and newly formed biomass. If biomass growth is limited by a factor other than the organic pollutant bioavailability, biochar amendment may enhance VPH attenuation in between a VPH source below ground and the atmosphere by reducing the risk of overloading the soil's biodegradation capacity

    Woody cover in wet and dry African savannas after six decades of experimental fires

    Fire is an integral process in savannas ecosystems as it alters the extent of woody cover in these systems. This study examined the effects of varying fire frequencies and fire exclusion over a 60-year time period in South Africa. The presence of fire, irrespective of frequency, was influential in lowering tree abundance in the wet savanna, whilst the effect of fire in the dry savanna was limited. This study suggests that vegetation responses to fire are most likely influenced by rainfall, thus it is recommended that management strategies should take account of whether a savanna is a wet or dry system when implementing fire management regimes

    In his 2003 essay E O Wilson outlined his vision for an “encyclopaedia of life” comprising “an electronic page for each species of organism on Earth”, each page containing “the scientific name of the species, a pictorial or genomic presentation of the primary type specimen on which its name is based, and a summary of its diagnostic traits.” Although the “quiet revolution” in biodiversity informatics has generated numerous online resources, including some directly inspired by Wilson's essay (e.g., "http://ispecies.org":http://ispecies.org, "http://www.eol.org":http://www.eol.org), we are still some way from the goal of having available online all relevant information about a species, such as its taxonomy, evolutionary history, genomics, morphology, ecology, and behaviour. While the biodiversity community has been developing a plethora of databases, some with overlapping goals and duplicated content, Wikipedia has been slowly growing to the point where it now has over 100,000 pages on biological taxa. My goal in this essay is to explore the idea that, largely independent of the efforts of biodiversity informatics and well-funded international efforts, Wikipedia ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) has emerged as potentially the best platform for fulfilling E O Wilson’s vision
