    Mine burial in the seabed of high-turbidity area (Belgian coastal zone): findings from a first experiment

With increasing human interference (e.g. fisheries, aggregate extraction, harbour related activities), it forms a threat to the safety at sea. In this study, test mines were deployed on a sandy seabed for three months to investigate mine burial processes as a function of hydrodynamic and meteorological conditions. The mine experiment was conducted in a shallow (9 m), macrotidal environment characterized by highly turbid waters (yearly and depth-averaged suspended particulate matter concentration of 100 mg l-1). Results showed some variability of the overall mine burial, which corresponded with scouring processes induced by a (sub-) tidal forcing mechanism. The main burial events however were linked to storm-related scouring processes, and subsequent mine roll into the resulting pit. Two storms affecting the mines during the 3-month experiment resulted in enduring increases in burial volume to 60% and 80%, respectively. More cyclic and ephemeral burial and exposure events appear to be linked to the local hydrodynamic regime. During slack tides, suspended sediment settles on the seabed, increasing the burial volume. In between slack tides, sediment is re-suspended, decreasing the burial volume. The temporal pattern of this never reported burial mechanism, as measured optically, mimics the cyclicity of the suspended sediment concentration as recorded by ultrasonic signals at a nearby benthic observatory. Given the similarity in response signals at the two sites, we hypothesize that the formation of high-concentrated mud suspensions (HCMS) is a mechanism causing short-term burial and exposure of mines. This short-term burial and exposure increase the chance that mines are ‘missed’ during tracking surveys. Test mines contribute to our understanding of the settling and erosion of HCMS, and thus shed a light on generic sedimentary processes

    Source gases are defined as those gases that, by their breakdown, introduce into the stratosphere halogen, hydrogen, and nitrogen compounds that are important in stratospheric ozone destruction. Given here is an update of the existing concentration time series for chlorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and methane. Also reviewed is information on halogen containing species and the use of these data for establishing trends. Also reviewed is evidence on trends in trace gases that influence tropospheric chemistry and thus the tropospheric lifetimes of source gases, such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, or nitrogen oxides.     Successful treatment of a recurrent Aspergillus niger otomycosis with local application of voriconazole

    Fungal otitis (otomycosis) is a common infection encountered by otolaryngologists. Nevertheless, its management can be challenging because of its high recurrence rate and of the limited therapeutic options. A 45-year-old woman suffered from recurrent otomycosis. The ineffectiveness of successive antibiotic cures and repeated topical treatments with nystatin and then with econazole cream led to perform microbiological analyses. Culture of ear swab grew Aspergillus niger. The use of a 1% voriconazole sterile solution previously validated for treatment of eye infections was considered after ensuring the absence of known ototoxic effects of the antifungal and of the excipients. The patient was advised to apply locally this voriconazole solution daily for 14 days (3 drops, 3-4 times a day). Full recovery was obtained at the end of the treatment, and no relevant side effects were noticed. More than one year after completion of therapy, there was no recurrence. Our observation shows that voriconazole 1% solution is an interesting option for treating otomycosis which failed to respond to usual therapeutic options. Further prospective studies are now warranted to confirm these findings

    An imaging and spectroscopic study of the very metal-deficient blue compact dwarf galaxy Tol 1214--277

    We present a spectrophotometric study based on VLT/FORS I observations of one of the most metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies known, Tol 1214-277 (Z ~ Zsun/25). The data show that roughly half of the total luminosity of the BCD originates from a bright and compact starburst region located at the northeastern tip of a faint dwarf galaxy with cometary appearance. The starburst has ignited less than 4 Myr ago and its emission is powered by several thousands O7V stars and ~ 170 late-type nitrogen Wolf-Rayet stars located within a compact region with < 500 pc in diameter. For the first time in a BCD, a relatively strong [Fe V] 4227 emission line is seen which together with intense He II 4686 emission indicates the presence of a very hard radiation field in Tol 1214-277. We argue that this extraordinarily hard radiation originates from both Wolf--Rayet stars and radiative shocks in the starburst region. The structural properties of the low-surface-brightness (LSB) component underlying the starburst have been investigated by means of surface photometry down to 28 B mag/sq.arcsec. We find that, for a surface brightness level fainter than ~ 24.5 B mag/sq.arcsec, an exponential fitting law provides an adequate approximation to its radial intensity distribution. The broad-band colors in the outskirts of the LSB component of Tol 1214-277 are nearly constant and are consistent with an age below one Gyr.     Ultrasonic roll bite measurements in cold rolling: Contact length and strip thickness

    In cold rolling of thin metal strip, contact conditions between the work rolls and the strip are of great importance: roll deformations and their effect on strip thickness variation may lead to strip flatness defects and thickness inhomogeneity. To control the process, online process measurements are usually carried out; such as the rolling load, forward slip and strip tensions at each stand. Shape defects of the strip are usually evaluated after the last stand of a rolling mill thanks to a flatness measuring roll. However, none of these measurements is made within the roll bite itself due to the harsh conditions taking place in that area. This paper presents a sensor capable of monitoring strip thickness variations as well as roll bite length in situ and in real time. The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses that reflect from the interface between the roll and the strip. Both the time-of-flight of the pulses and the reflection coefficient (the ratio of the amplitude of the reflected signal to that of the incident signal) are recorded. The sensor system was incorporated into a work roll and tested on a pilot rolling mill. Measurements were taken as steel strips were rolled under several lubrication conditions. Strip thickness variation and roll-bite length obtained from the experimental data agree well with numerical results computed with a cold rolling model in the mixed lubrication regime

    Abundances in the Neutral Interstellar Medium of I Zw 18 from FUSE Observations

    We report on new FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 18. The new data represent an improvement over previous FUSE spectra by a factor of 1.7 in the signal-to-noise. Together with a larger spectral coverage (917-1188 angstroms), this allows us to characterize absorption lines in the interstellar medium with unprecedented accuracy. The kinematics averaged over the large sampled region shows no clear evidence of gas inflows or outflows. The H I absorption is interstellar with a column density of 2.2 (+0.6,-0.5} * 10^21 cm^(-2). A conservative 3 sigma upper limit of 5.25 * 10^(14) cm^(-2) is derived for the column density of diffuse H_2. From a simultaneous fitting of metal absorption lines in the interstellar medium, we infer the following abundances: [Fe/H] = -1.76 +/- 0.12, [O/H] = -2.06 +/- 0.28, [Si/H] = -2.09 +/- 0.12, [Ar/H] = -2.27 +/- 0.13, and [N/H] = -2.88 +/- 0.11. This is in general several times lower than in the H II regions. The only exception is iron, whose abundance is the same. The abundance pattern of the interstellar medium suggests ancient star-formation activity with an age of at least a Gyr that enriched the H I phase. Around 470 SNe Ia are required to produce the iron content. A more recent episode that started 10 to several 100 Myr ago is responsible for the additional enrichment of alpha-elements and nitrogen in the H II regions.Comment: 48 pages including 3 tables (Latex) and 7 figures (postscript).     Equilibrium of sinks and sources of sulphate over Europe: comparison between a six-year simulation and EMEP observations

    Sulphate distributions were simulated with a global chemistry transport model. A chemical scheme describing the sulphur cycle and the parameterisations of the main sinks for sulphate aerosols were included in the model. A six-year simulation was conducted from the years 2000 to 2005, driven by the ECMWF operational analyses. Emissions come from an inventory representative of the year 2000. This paper focuses on the analysis of the sulphate sinks and sources over Europe for the entire period of simulation. The Sulphate burden shows a marked annual cycle, which is the result of the annual variations of the aqueous and gaseous chemistry. Regionally, the monthly mean aerosol burden can vary by a factor of 2 from one year to another, because of different weather conditions, driving chemistry, transport and wet deposition of sulphate aerosols. Sulphate ground concentrations, scavenging fluxes and precipitation modelled were compared with observations. The model represents quite well sulphate fields over Europe, but has a general tendency to overestimate sulphate ground concentrations, in particular over Northern Europe. We assume that it is linked to the representation of the scavenging fluxes, which are underestimated. We suggest that uncertainties in modelled precipitation explain only partially the underestimation of the scavenging fluxes in the model

    Mid Infrared Properties of Low Metallicity Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies From Spitzer/IRS

    We present a {\em Spitzer}-based mid-infrared study of a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCD) using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), including the first mid-IR spectrum of IZw18, the archetype for the BCD class and among the most metal poor galaxies known. We show the spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in low-metallicity environment. We find that the equivalent widths (EW) of PAHs at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.2 Ό\mum are generally weaker in BCDs than in typical starburst galaxies and that the fine structure line ratio, [NeIII]/[NeII], has a weak anti-correlation with the PAH EW. A much stronger anti-correlation is shown between the PAH EW and the product of the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio and the UV luminosity density divided by the metallicity. We conclude that PAH EW in metal-poor high-excitation environments is determined by a combination of PAH formation and destruction effects.Comment: 41 pages, 14 figure

    New Wolf-Rayet Galaxies with Detection of WC Stars

    We report the discovery of two new Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies: Mrk~1039, and F08208++2816. Two broad WR bumps at 5808\AA~ and 4650\AA~ indicate the presence of WCE and WNL star population in all two sources. We also confirm the presenceof WR features in Mrk~35, previously detected in a different position. The observed equivalent width of the WR bump at 4650\AA~ and the derived number ratios of WR/(WR++O) imply that star formation in these sources takes place inshort burst duration. Comparisons with the recent models of WR populations in young starbursts with the observed EW(\HeII)/EW(\CIV)/EW(WRbump) and their relative intensitie provide an indication that the stellar initial mass function in some WR galaxies might not be Salpeter-like. It is interesting to find that the luminous IRAS source, F08208++2816, has little dust reddening, probably because of the existence of a powerful superwind. By comparisons with other starbursts observed with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, F08208++2816 as a merging system renders a chance to study the contribution from young starbursts to the UV background radiation in universe.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, accepted by The Astrophysical Journa

    BioMAJ: a flexible framework for databanks synchronization and processing

    Large- and medium-scale computational molecular biology projects require accurate bioinformatics software and numerous heterogeneous biological databanks, which are distributed around the world. BioMAJ provides a flexible, robust, fully automated environment for managing such massive amounts of data. The JAVA application enables automation of the data update cycle process and supervision of the locally mirrored data repository. We have developed workflows that handle some of the most commonly used bioinformatics databases. A set of scripts is also available for post-synchronization data treatment consisting of indexation or format conversion (for NCBI blast, SRS, EMBOSS, GCG, etc.). BioMAJ can be easily extended by personal homemade processing scripts. Source history can be kept via html reports containing statements of locally managed databanks
