Amorphization of ZnAl2O4 spinel under heavy ion irradiation
ZnAl2O4 spinels have been irradiated with several ions (Ne, S, Kr and Xe) at the IRRSUD beam-line of the GANIL facility, in order to determine irradiation conditions (stopping power, fluence) for amorphisation. We observed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) that with Xe ions at 92 MeV, individual ion tracks are still crystalline, whereas an amorphisation starts below a fluence of 5.1012 cm-2 up to a total amorphisation between 1x1013 and 1x1014 cm-2. The coexistence of amorphous and crystalline domains in the same pristine grain is clearly visible in the TEM images. All the crystalline domains remain close to the same orientation as the original grain. According to TEM and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results, the stopping power threshold for amorphisation is between 9 and 12 keV.nm-1
Polarization resolved Cu -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of orbital and spin excitations in NdBaCuO
High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven
particularly effective in the determination of crystal field and spin
excitations in cuprates. Its strength lies in the large Cu resonance
and in the fact that the scattering cross section follows quite closely the
single-ion model predictions, both in the insulating parent compounds and in
the superconducting doped materials. However, the spectra become increasingly
broader with (hole) doping, hence resolving and assigning spectral features has
proven challenging even with the highest energy resolution experimentally
achievable. Here we have overcome this limitation by measuring the complete
polarization dependence of the RIXS spectra as function of momentum transfer
and doping in thin films of NdBaCuO. Besides
confirming the previous assignment of and spin excitations (magnon,
bimagnon) in the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compound, we unequivocally
single out the actual spin-flip contribution at all dopings. We also
demonstrate that the softening of excitations is mainly attributed to the
shift of the peak to lower energy loss. These results provide a definitive
assessment of the RIXS spectra of cuprates and demonstrate that RIXS
measurements with full polarization control are practically feasible and highly
informative.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
Are N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics equivalent?
After recalling different formulations of the definition of supersymmetric
quantum mechanics given in the literature, we discuss the relationships between
them in order to provide an answer to the question raised in the title.Comment: 15 page
Mechanism of insulin resistance in a rat model of kidney disease and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
International audienceChronic kidney disease is associated with homeostatic imbalances such as insulin resistance. However, the underlying mechanisms leading to these imbalances and whether they promote the development of type 2 diabetes is unknown. The effect of chronic kidney disease on insulin resistance was studied on two different rat strains. First, in a 5/6th nephrectomised Sprague-Dawley rat model of chronic kidney disease, we observed a correlation between the severity of chronic kidney disease and hyperglycemia as evaluated by serum fructosamine levels (p<0.0001). Further, glucose tolerance tests indicated an increase of 25% in glycemia in chronic kidney disease rats (p<0.0001) as compared to controls whereas insulin levels remained unchanged. We also observed modulation of glucose transporters expression in several tissues such as the liver (decrease of â40%, pâ€0.01) and muscles (decrease of â29%, pâ€0.05). Despite a significant reduction of â37% in insulin-dependent glucose uptake in the muscles of chronic kidney disease rats (p<0.0001), the development of type 2 diabetes was never observed. Second, in a rat model of metabolic syndrome (Zucker Leprfa/fa), chronic kidney disease caused a 50% increased fasting hyperglycemia (p<0.0001) and an exacerbated glycemic response (p<0.0001) during glucose challenge. Similar modulations of glucose transporters expression and glucose uptake were observed in the two models. However, 30% (p<0.05) of chronic kidney disease Zucker rats developed characteristics of type 2 diabetes. Thus, our results suggest that downregulation of GLUT4 in skeletal muscle may be associated with insulin resistance in chronic kidney disease and could lead to type 2 diabetes in predisposed animals

Isentropic Compression with a Rectangular Configuration for Tungstene and Tantalum, Computations and Comparison with Experiments
Isentropic compression experiments and numerical simulations on metals are performed at Z accelerator facility from Sandia National Laboratory and at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in order to study the isentrope, associated Hugoniot and phase changes of these metals [1]. 3D configurations have been calculated here to benchmark the new beta version of the electromagnetism package coupled with the dynamics in Ls-Dyna and compared with the ICE Z shots 1511 and 1555. The electromagnetism module is being developed in the general-purpose explicit and implicit finite element program LS-DYNA{reg_sign} in order to perform coupled mechanical/thermal/electromagnetism simulations. The Maxwell equations are solved using a Finite Element Method (FEM) for the solid conductors coupled with a Boundary Element Method (BEM) for the surrounding air (or vacuum). More details can be read in the reference [2], [3]
Three-dimensional CFD simulations with large displacement of the geometries using a connectivity-change moving mesh approach
This paper deals with three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations involving 3D moving geometries with large displacements on unstructured meshes. Such simulations are of great value to industry, but remain very time-consuming. A robust moving mesh algorithm coupling an elasticity-like mesh deformation solution and mesh optimizations was proposed in previous works, which removes the need for global remeshing when performing large displacements. The optimizations, and in particular generalized edge/face swapping, preserve the initial quality of the mesh throughout the simulation. We propose to integrate an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian compressible flow solver into this process to demonstrate its capabilities in a full CFD computation context. This solver relies on a local enforcement of the discrete geometric conservation law to preserve the order of accuracy of the time integration. The displacement of the geometries is either imposed, or driven by fluidâstructure interaction (FSI). In the latter case, the six degrees of freedom approach for rigid bodies is considered. Finally, several 3D imposed-motion and FSI examples are given to validate the proposed approach, both in academic and industrial configurations
FunMap: Efficient Execution of Functional Mappings for Knowledge Graph Creation
Data has exponentially grown in the last years, and knowledge graphs
constitute powerful formalisms to integrate a myriad of existing data sources.
Transformation functions -- specified with function-based mapping languages
like FunUL and RML+FnO -- can be applied to overcome interoperability issues
across heterogeneous data sources. However, the absence of engines to
efficiently execute these mapping languages hinders their global adoption. We
propose FunMap, an interpreter of function-based mapping languages; it relies
on a set of lossless rewriting rules to push down and materialize the execution
of functions in initial steps of knowledge graph creation. Although applicable
to any function-based mapping language that supports joins between mapping
rules, FunMap feasibility is shown on RML+FnO. FunMap reduces data redundancy,
e.g., duplicates and unused attributes, and converts RML+FnO mappings into a
set of equivalent rules executable on RML-compliant engines. We evaluate FunMap
performance over real-world testbeds from the biomedical domain. The results
indicate that FunMap reduces the execution time of RML-compliant engines by up
to a factor of 18, furnishing, thus, a scalable solution for knowledge graph
creation
