    UNM Shock Tube Modernization

    The UNM shock tube in the Mechanical Engineering department has been in continuous operation since its creation in 2007. During this time, significant discoveries in the field of Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities has been made with this shock tube. While conducting these experiments, limitations on the operational aspects and data quality aspects of this research tool have been found. To further advance the state of the art, it was necessary to address these limitations to allow the research to continue to push boundaries and discover new science

    Cyclic AMP-specific phosphodiesterase, PDE8A1, is activated by protein kinase A-mediated phosphorylation

    The cyclic AMP-specific phosphodiesterase PDE8 has been shown to play a pivotal role in important processes such as steroidogenesis, T cell adhesion, regulation of heart beat and chemotaxis. However, no information exists on how the activity of this enzyme is regulated. We show that under elevated cAMP conditions, PKA acts to phosphorylate PDE8A on serine 359 and this action serves to enhance the activity of the enzyme. This is the first indication that PDE8 activity can be modulated by a kinase, and we propose that this mechanism forms a feedback loop that results in the restoration of basal cAMP levels.     Reassessing Ethnic Differences in Mean BMI and Changes Between 2007 and 2013 in English Children.

    OBJECTIVE: National body fatness (BF) data for English South Asian and Black children use BMI, which provides inaccurate ethnic comparisons. BF levels and time trends in the English National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) between 2007 and 2013 were assessed by using ethnic-specific adjusted BMI (aBMI) for South Asian and Black children. METHODS: Analyses were based on 3,195,323 children aged 4 to 5 years and 2,962,673 children aged 10 to 11 years. aBMI values for South Asian and Black children (relating to BF as in White children) were derived independently. Mean aBMI levels and 5-year aBMI changes were obtained by using linear regression. RESULTS: In the 2007-2008 NCMP, mean aBMIs in 10- to 11-year-old children (boys, girls) were higher in South Asian children (20.1, 19.9 kg/m2 ) and Black girls, but not in Black boys (18.4, 19.2 kg/m2 ) when compared with White children (18.6, 19.0 kg/m2 ; all P < 0.001). Mean 5-year changes (boys, girls) were higher in South Asian children (0.16, 0.32 kg/m2 per 5 y; both P < 0.001) and Black boys but not girls (0.13, 0.15 kg/m2 per 5 y; P = 0.01, P = 0.41) compared with White children (0.02, 0.11 kg/m2 per 5 y). Ethnic differences at 4 to 5 years were similar. Unadjusted BMI showed similar 5-year changes but different mean BMI patterns. CONCLUSIONS: BF levels were higher in South Asian children than in other groups in 2007 and diverged from those in White children until 2013, a pattern not apparent from unadjusted BMI data

    Driving and sustaining culture change in professional sport performance teams: A grounded theory

    Objectives As part of the recent upsurge of work on management and organizational factors in elite sports teams, researchers have focused on the team management-led creation and regulation of high performing cultures. The purpose of this study was to therefore add to a recently developed model of culture change best practice in Olympic sports teams, as led and perceived by incoming performance directors, and conceptualize culture change best practice in professional sports teams, as led and perceived by incoming team managers. Design and method A pragmatic research philosophy and corresponding grounded theory methodology were used to generate a practically-meaningful model of this culture change process from the perspective of UK-based professional team managers. Results Perceived best practice in team manager-led culture change was found to involve a finite phase of initial evaluation, planning, and impact adjoined to the enduring management of a holistic, integrated, and dynamic social system. With the former process acting as the catalyst for successful change, this model revealed that optimal change was felt to primarily rely on the constant acquisition, negotiation, and alignment of internal and external stakeholder perceptions. Conclusions Based on the model's principles, the optimization of professional team culture is defined by a manager's initial actions and never definitively achieved but rather constantly constructed and re-constructed in complex social and power dynamics. Beyond providing a conceptual backdrop for continued research in this area, the model is also a tool on which the practice of professional team managers and their supporting sport psychologists can be based

    Differential actions of gangliosides on gonadotropin and cholera enterotoxin stimulated adenosine 3':5' cyclic monophosphate dependent protein kinase in isolated rat ovarian cells

    Rat ovarian cells were exposed to cholera enterotoxin, and the effect on progesterone synthesis as well as on protein kinase stimulation was examined. Cholera enterotoxin stimulated ovarian steroidogenesis in a dose dependent manner similar to that of hCG. The stimulation of protein kinase by cholera toxin was followed by a lag period, whereas hCG effect was immediate. Mixed gangliosides, when added to the incubation medium, blocked the cholera enterotoxin-stimulated protein kinase activity and abolished the decrease in exogenous [3H] cyclic AMP receptor activity brought about by the toxin. In contrast, under similar experimental conditions ganglioside addition elicited no effect on protein kinase activation produced by hCG or LH. The data suggest that gangliosides do not appear to be directly involved in gonadotropin binding to ovarian cell membrane and subsequent mediation of physiological response.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/22631/1/0000181.pd

    metaboprep: an R package for pre-analysis data description and processing

    MOTIVATION: Metabolomics is an increasingly common part of health research and there is need for preanalytical data processing. Researchers typically need to characterize the data and to exclude errors within the context of the intended analysis. Whilst some preprocessing steps are common, there is currently a lack of standardization and reporting transparency for these procedures. RESULTS: Here, we introduce metaboprep, a standardized data processing workflow to extract and characterize high quality metabolomics datasets. The package extracts data from preformed worksheets, provides summary statistics and enables the user to select samples and metabolites for their analysis based on a set of quality metrics. A report summarizing quality metrics and the influence of available batch variables on the data are generated for the purpose of open disclosure. Where possible, we provide users flexibility in defining their own selection thresholds.     K0.53Mn2.37Fe1.24(PO4)3

    During an attempt to crystallize potassium manganese diiron phosphate KMnFe2(PO4)3 by the flux method, a new phase, potassium dimanganese iron triphosphate, K0.53Mn2.37Fe1.24(PO4)3, was isolated. This phase, whose composition was confirmed by ICP analysis, is isotypic with the alluaudite-like phosphates, thus it exhibits the (A2)(A′2)(A1)(A′1)(A′′1)(M1)(M2)2(PO4)3 general formula. The site occupancies led to the following cation distribution: 0.53 K on A′2 (site symmetry 2), 0.31 Mn on A′′1, 1.0 Mn on M1 (site symmetry 2) and (0.62 Fe + 0.38 Mn) on M2. The structure is built up from infinite chains of edge-sharing M1O6 and M2O6 octa­hedra. These chains run along [10] and are connected by two different PO4 tetrahedra, one of which exhibits 2 symmetry. The resulting three-dimensional framework delimits large tunnels parallel to [001], which are partially occupied by the K+ and Mn2+ cations

    Morphologies of High Redshift, Dust Obscured Galaxies from Keck Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics

    Spitzer MIPS images in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey have revealed a class of extremely dust obscured galaxy (DOG) at z~2. The DOGs are defined by very red optical to mid-IR (observed-frame) colors, R - [24 um] > 14 mag, i.e. f_v (24 um) / f_v (R) > 1000. They are Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies with L_8-1000 um > 10^12 -10^14 L_sun, but typically have very faint optical (rest-frame UV) fluxes. We imaged three DOGs with the Keck Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) system, obtaining ~0.06'' resolution in the K'-band. One system was dominated by a point source, while the other two were clearly resolved. Of the resolved sources, one can be modeled as a exponential disk system. The other is consistent with a de Vaucouleurs profile typical of elliptical galaxies. The non-parametric measures of their concentration and asymmetry, show the DOGs to be both compact and smooth. The AO images rule out double nuclei with separations of greater than 0.1'' (< 1 kpc at z=2), making it unlikely that ongoing major mergers (mass ratios of 1/3 and greater) are triggering the high IR luminosities. By contrast, high resolution images of z~2 SCUBA sources tend to show multiple components and a higher degree of asymmetry. We compare near-IR morphologies of the DOGs with a set of z=1 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs; L_IR ~ 10^11 L_sun) imaged with Keck LGSAO by the Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey. The DOGs in our sample have significantly smaller effective radii, ~1/4 the size of the z=1 LIRGs, and tend towards higher concentrations. The small sizes and high concentrations may help explain the globally obscured rest-frame blue-to-UV emission of the DOGs.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa
